    3. What you want to do is to request a copy of the application for the SS card. By requesting Form SS-5 from the federal government, you could receive a copy of an individual's original application for a social security number. At the least, it would contain the applicant's name, complete birth date and place, and often the parents' names. Once Form SS-5 points you in the right direction, you are ready to gather additional information. For example, ordering a copy of a death certificate from a state or county vital records office can prove very rewarding. A sample letter for the Form SS-5 with the address to write to follows: Freedom of Information Officer 4-H-8 Annex Bldg. 6401 Security Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21235 Dear Freedom of Information Officer, Please send me a copy of the application for a social security card (Form SS5) by the following person. I found the information on the Social Security Death Master file compiled by the Social Security Administration. My understanding is that the fee is $7.00 if I supply the social security number, or $16.50 if the social security number is unknown or incorrect. Enclosed is a check or money order for $___________, made payable to the Social Security Administration. This should give some sort of starting point. Best of luck Bill Beckett A man that boasts only of his roots is conceding that he belongs to a family that's better dead than alive. -- Anonymous >I have a simple question and I'm not sure where to turn. 1. [OHBELMON-L] Rootsweb WorldConnect Project
    2. This is to Bonnie Burkhart as well as all others on the list. A number of weeks ago, I asked several questions about submitting a family file to Rootweb's WorldConnect Project. I received several replies from list members with suggestions but none really specifically answered some of my questions. I want to tell you and the list that I have submitted three files to the WorldConnect Project and I am very pleased with the results. My files contain a lot of living people. I did not want their names to appear in the database that I submitted. To create another file and manually delete all those people would entail considerable time and effort on my part. However, when I found that I could easily remove a file if I was not pleased with the results, I submitted my files basically without change. I chose the option given me of removing all living persons, without knowing how that would be done without also removing deceased persons for whom I had no dates nor had I marked them specifically as having died. To my surprise, the program that Rootsweb uses calculates approximate dates for all persons for whom no dates are given, based upon any dates that are given for people within that family group. The results were exactly what I had hoped for. They did in minutes what it would have taken me hours to do. If anyone on the list has been reluctant about submitting their family file to the Rootsweb WorldConnect Project for the reason I have stated here, I can tell you that they make it easy for you. Whoever wrote the program is to be commended. By submitting your file, you increase your chances of finding someone else who is researching your family name. Bill O'Neil

    3. Hi Tami, I received this from another list. Maybe it will help! Carole ------------------------------------ The first three digits in a social security number indicate either where the person applied (if before 1972) or where they resided at the time (for those after 1972). It does not necessarily indicate where the person was born. The middle two digits are a code to identify fraudelent numbers. 1. [OHBELMON-L] general genealogy research question
    2. Tami Church
    3. Hi everyone. I have met many wonderful people on this list that have been doing research longer than I, so I am hoping that even though this is not a "Belmont" related question, that some generous soul with help me out here and share some ideas and general knowledge. I have a simple question and I'm not sure where to turn. So here goes: My Maternal grandmother was born to a Polish immigrant - I believe his name was Frank Grohoski (sp?), and her mother's name was Ellen?????? However, her father apparently abandoned the family and this was during a time when the Polish were really made fun of, So, Ellen changed all her children's names to her mother's maiden name, which was Eckler. Therefore her legal name (my grandmother's) became "Julia Leona Eckler". I have looked all over the internet looking for information and ......nothing. Well, then a lucky break (I hope) I found her social security card. Now I am wondering if there is a web site that I might have access to (or a place to write) that using her social security number would give me access to any information on her. I am looking for her ancestors, both maternal and paternal. Here is what I have: Julia Leona Eckler (born Grohoski?) June 9, 1909 Ithaca, NY Mother: Ellen ??????? Father: Frank Grohoski (and I'm not even sure if that is right) (siblings: Paul, Thomas, Helen, and Mamie) I would be so grateful for ANY ideas on where to turn. And I sincerely hope that this general genealogy query didn't offend anyone as it is not "Belmont" related. Thanks in advance, Tami :o) Tami (Brewer) Church CATCH@megsinet.net searching BREWER, BIRCH, BRADY, WATSON, ECKLER, BRIGGS, PORTERFIELD, and many others!

She may have had a brother named Patrick. Their parents were Martin and Bridgette (Durant) O'Toole. Margaret married John Naber, across the river in Benwood, WV in 1911 and took her own life on April 5, 1914. Not much is known by my family about her. Any information is very much appreciated. 3. Hi Jack, I have done research in Belmont County for two summers and you will find the court house in St.Clairsville to be roomy, well lit, and the people friendly. I pulled up several wills from before 1860. I have kinfolk in both Belmont and Harrison county so I stay in St. Clairsville. Every thing is within a ten mile radius. The Barnesville Library's genealogy room is fantastic!! My ancestors settled right on the Belmont/Harrison county line, so they lived in one place, and are buried in another and the land sales, newspaper records are contained in both county seats. Good luck in "shaking your family tree".... Breezy F. N.Carolina........TODD,TAGGART,RUSSELL,SPECHT

I also understand that the Belmont County Courthouse doesn't have a lot of info that one would normally expect and that it is not very convenient for research. I have found that my 3g grandfather, Samuel McWilliams, bought two sections (R5-T8-S28 and 29) in Union Township (1802 and 1807). Where would be the best place to obtain documentation of this purchase? Where can I find where that land was located? He died April 29, 1825. Is it possible to obtain a copy of his will (if it exists)? My 2g grandparents, John Wiley and Sarah McWilliams, were married May 7, 1812. Where is the best place to find this documentation? Does any birth documentation exist prior to 1867? Thank you very much for your assistance. Jack Ehmer

I am trying to find out any information on any persons who may have lived in the Belmont County area with the last name of Culp during the 1800's and early 1900's. I realize these are very broad parameters but I believe this would be a good starting point to retrace my tracks in order to uncover what has been a mystery to my family for over 80 years. I also may be in a position at the end of the month to offer some compensation for those who would be interested in researching this matter beyond those resources that are available at your fingertips. I finish my last semester of school tomorrow and will begin working full-time on Friday. Thanks to those who may be able to assist me. Peter
