    3. Pat, The Probate Records for Belmont County are located in the Belmont County Courthouse in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Main Street. Vital Records (Births, Deaths, Wills, Estates, and some Naturalizations are located on the second floor, with some Naturalization Records on the third floor. Some Wills and Estates will have to be ordered which could take up to two or three weeks. They are one dollar a sheet to have copied. The Birth and Death Certificates are located in three different places depending on where the person was born. If they were born in or around Bellaire, they are at the Bellaire Health Department on Main Street in Bellaire above the Police Department. If they were born in or around the Martins Ferry area, they are at the Martins Ferry Health Department, I need to check on that address. All other birth records of birth and death are located at the Belmont County Health Department on St. Rt. 331 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, past the Belmont Technical College. I will have to check on the exact hours they are all open. The St. Clairsville Public Library has a Genealogy area located on the second floor and is located on Main St., conveniently across from the Courthouse! The cost of a regular birth or death certificate at the Belmont County Health Department (I would think it is the same at the other two) is $.03 per copy. Certified copies, I would have to get a price on. I am sure it is more expensive at the courthouse. I live within three to five miles of the Belmont County Health Department. If you have several Belmont County births and deaths, you could get them all at one time. You do have to get them out of the drawers and put them back. They make the copies. I take a piece of card stock paper to hold my place and to make it easier to put them back. Also, there is very little room where the files are. There are no tables, no place to sit, a very small area to move around in, and some of the file drawers have to be reached on a step stool if you are short. I have to check on the other two Health Departments to see how they are. I also made a form on which to record the name, date, place to checkmark when found, and a place for notes. You cannot work with a binder because there is no room. I think that just about covers everything I can think of. I will get more exact information and post it next week. These are some of the things I would like to know before making a trip to Belmont County. I hope this helps some of you. 2. Thank you so much, JL. I have ordered John S. Willis' Military and Pension files(Several weeks ago) and have some info from them now. I would recommend that anyone whose ancestor was in the Civil War do this. There is a wealth of info in both Files. I got place of birth and marriage date and place. A very nice lady looked them up for me, and she said there is much more so I ordered them. The cost is abt $12.00 each which is pretty cheap, but it takes up to 12 weeks to get them. I will let all you great people in Belmont know. Thanks again, Martha

Caldwell, pub. 1880 THOMAS McCALL was born in Chartiers Twp., Washington Co., PA in 1807 and was a son of Alexander & Margaret (FERGUE) McCALL. Alexander's father, John McCALL and his wife Jane McCALL were born in Scotland. John served in the Rev. War. He died in 1810, nearly 100 years old and his wife died subsequently, at about the same age. Alexander was born in York Co., PA.He came with his wife and three children, Jane, Thomas and John to Wheeling creek in 1811 on the north side of Union Twp., Belmont Co. He had served as a captain and major in the PA Militia when engaged in actual service under the general government, and for this reason, "escaped" service in the War of 1812. He died in 1833, in his 65th year and his wife in 1839 about 70 years old. Their children were Jane, married to Thomas WILSON, deceased; Thomas, married to Mariam HARRAH; John, married first to Margaret TAGGART, deceased; second to Mary FULTON; Sarah, deceased, married to John TRIMBLE; and Mary, married to John VINCENT. Thomas McCALL's children are: Tabitha J., married to Wm. BELL; John T., married to Anna CHANDLER; Alexander, deceased; Chrales H., married to Louisa VANCE; Hugh F., deceased; George S., deceased; J. H.; Msargaret T.; Thomas E.; and Mariam A., deceased. I was wrong, it was Thomas' father, Alexander, who died in 1833. I guess I did not read it carefully enough. -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com>

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Lookups in Belmont County
    2. Connie S. Barries
    3. Dear List, I have several of you who are interested in the Belmont County Lookups. Now, I have a question for you. I have ask several other genealogists how much I should charge and have been told to "set my own price." Now, I thought I would start with the actual cost of the copies and the postage. The hard part comes from figuring up how much to charge for the time it takes and the amount of travel involved. This may be different in each case. Some may be very easy and quite close, others may take more research and more travel. If you were in a position to do research, how would you decide on the amount to charge for time and travel? I want to be fair to everyone and make it a reasonable price. I would appreciate you input since you are the ones who need the research done. Thank you very much for your help. Connie
