    1. [OHBELMON-L] Lockwoods in cemetaries...
    2. Teri Garety
    3. Hi all - Just wanted to jump in here and let people know... over the Memorial Day weekend, we too were in Belmont. We had a little extra time so we went looking for a cemetary we weren't sure how to find. To make a long story short, we ended up in Dillie's Bottom (of all places) and found a VERY old cemetary there. I believe it was called Lockwood cemetary. We walked around a little; most of the stones were unreadable but there were quite a few Lockwoods there. I didn't really pay much attention (I was looking for Suttons or Coffmans or Hendersons) but perhaps it has been transcribed. Just thought I'd mention it. Teri Garety (nee Henderson)

Here is what it has to say about Alexander McHenry: He was a private in Co. D 1st Regt. O.V.I., age 22 (at time of entering service? I don't know), enlisted 10 Jun 1846, record of service was 1 year and he died at Camargo, Mexico. It also states that Co. D was recruited at Portsmouth, OH on 1 Jun 1846. There is also a history of the Regiment in here. Let me know if you want more. I have an ISP problem and have been accessing my e-mail on the web site with another ISP. Slow going this way and I am way behind on managing my e-mail. Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com>

    3. Visited the above cemetery over the Holiday weekend and picked up as many names as I could. There are more graves there - it wasn't my intent to write everything down, but I got as many as time would allow. In addition to the list below, there were more McKelveys and some Paulls - I'm sure many other names. These are just the ones I could read. Let me know if you're interested in any of the surnames and I'll give you what I picked up. Glad to share. My 3ggf Noble TAYLOR 1776-1848, originally from Virginia I think, m Elizabeth LOCKWOOD in Cecil Co MD in 1798. They were in Belmont Co by 1806. 1. [OHBELMON-L] Bounty Land Warrants
    2. David McCAIN
    3. Would appreciate some advice from anyone on the list as to next step. IF a soldier in the War of 1812 were granted bounty land in 1850 while living in Belmont Co. (fought while living in PA), and he chose to accept it and sell (?) it to his son, would Belmont Co. be the first place to look for a legal transaction? This land was in Brown Co. Indiana, both father & son (James Coffland, Sr. & Jr.) were living in Belmont Co. in 1852 when father sent the certificate to the Land Office in Jeffersonville (Clark Co. )IN. Would there likely be any record of this transaction in the Belmont Co.? I do have a copy of the affidavit that Belmont Co. officials prepared for Sr. swearing to his identity and service. Any advice is appreciated Eleanor McCain

    3. To Patti and Carolyn!! I to have an ancestor who was also in the 174th!! His name was Seth Williams and he was from Somerton, Belmont County. I have the movement info on this infantry that I had found at the Barnesville Library!! I hope this helps you both!! 174th REGIMENT OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY ONE YEARS SERVICE This Regiment was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio from August 18 to September 21st, 1864, to serve ONE YEAR. It was ordered to proceed to Nashville, Tenn and report to General W.T. Sherman. The Regiment reached Nashville September 26th, and was immediatley ordered to proceed to Murpheesboro. It remained at Murpheesboro until the 27th of October. When it then was ordered to report to the Commanding Officer at Decatur, Alabama. It was to move to the mouth of the Elk River, leading, on the way four Companies as a garrison for Athens, Alabama. The Regiment soon returned to Decatur, where it remained until the 26th of November, when the town was evacuated. It then returned to Murpheesboro, where it remained during the "Siege" (Dec 4th) and participated in the Battle of Overalls Creek, on the 7th of Dec. the Regiment was engaed in the Battle of the Cedars on the 17th of January. it then moved down to Tennesee and up the Ohio River to Cincinnati. It was then ordered to Washington City, which it reached on the 29th of January, 1865. The Regiment remained in camp at Washinton City until the 21st of February. When it started for North Carolina, it reached Fort Fisher on the 23rd. It then marched to Morehead City, reaching the on the 24th, and Newbern on the 25th. It took part int he Battle of Wises Fork at Kinston, North Carolina. Under the order to muster out Volunteer whose terms of services expired previous to the 1st of October, the One Hundred and Seventy-fourth was mustered out June 28th, 1865. I hope this helps!!
