    1. [OHBELMON-L] Uncle Sam's Pensioners - 1884
    2. I was at the Ohio Historical Archives today digging around and I found the following article at the beginning of the film for the Belmont County "Children's Home Register, 1880-1947" on GR 3903. There was no indication in what newspaper it originally appeared in. It is rather long so I'll send it through in sections. It is typed as it appeared in print. I'll only add question marks (?) where it is very hard to read and I will have to guess on a letter or two. "UNCLE SAM'S PENSIONERS. Who Receive Pensions in Belmont County. The following is the list of those who received Pensions in Belmont county, on January 1, 1883, at which time the following list was made out. Quite a number have been allowed Pensions during the present year, whose names we have been unable to obtain. Many on this list have had the amount of their Pensions increased during the present year-all the $24 to $30, and some of the $18 to $24. The amount stated is the monthly allowance. The post-office address, and the cause for which pension was granted, is given: ALLEDONIA Margaret A. Moore, widow $12.00 ARMSTRONG'S MILLS Ruth Richardson, dep mother 8.00 Crawford E. 3. Nancy, as Clarington is a municipal cemetery, do you know if there is some sort of listing at the municipal building...surely there must be some records, or else how would they know where to bury folks? I stopped there a week or so ago, and was 'chased out' by the rain, so wasn't able to search for my great great grandmother, Araminta Reed Smith...d.1859.... Does anyone know anything about the Clarington Cemetery records? 2. J. Nelson Howell
    3. Nancy, Usually, the local veterans' associations will perform this if they are informed that there are graves of U.S. veterans. I would suggest you contact the American Legion. Unless they are informed, or a grave has a marker indicating a veteran is buried there, they have no way of determining which graves to mark. If you let them know of the cemetery, and that veterans are buried there, I am sure they would be happy to mark those graves. -Nelson > > This is unrelated, Bonnie, but maybe you'd know - who is it that puts > the flags on the military graves for the Memorial Day Weekend? 3. I've had so many responses to the different cemetery 'diggings' we found over the Memorial Day weekend, I can't hardly keep up. I'll try posting them in full & you can pick up whatever you please. Keep 2 things in mind - it wasn't our intention to write down every grave (although we tried with the very small cemeteries) and our lists are NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE. We may have missed some graves or couldn't read the stones or the stones were broken off. When a cemetery name wasn't posted, we called it by what ever Road it was on or something else nearby to somewhat identify with. Secondly, I had a heck of a time distinquising between '3's & '8's, so keep that in mind. I'd ask that if you find someone that's yours but the dates are wrong, please let me know so I can correct my copy and therefore won't pass on any bad info. 3. This is unrelated, Bonnie, but maybe you'd know - who is it that puts the flags on the military graves for the Memorial Day Weekend? I've found a grave yard in Pipe Creek (calling it Lockwood Hill Cemetery just because it's on that road) that has a few military graves, but had no flags. Thought I'd contact whoever it was & let them know it's there - I'm assuming it was an oversight. Also, a Great Grandfather of ours is there - he fought for 5 years in the civil war & there's no military recognition - do you know who I'd contact to see about that? This cemetery is along Pipe Creek - I believe it's in Mead Twp but very near the York Twp line - or perhaps the creek is the dividing line. There are at least 20 graves there, but many stones are missing or obscurred from age. Thanks Nancy
