Does anyone have access to the 1830 Belmont Co. census head of household. On page 203 of the index w345 there should be a John Woodland. I would like to know the ages and number of people listed. Would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you. Connie
Bonnie, <Just wanted to thank you for such a great job you are doing helping people. Just read what you did for John W. Knight. Wish I could find my people mentioned that many times. They just kept breezing through to places farther west. Anyway a big thank you as I know the time involved to go through several books. Jerilyn> I second this opinion and want to offer to you my thanks as well. The Belmont County list has become one of my favorites!!!!!! Thanks for all your hard work. Charlotte macslewin@aol.com
Don I have a Judith Knight, daughter of William and Elizabeth. Parents died in Cecil Co., Maryland. Judith married Joseph Kirk and died in Fayette Co., PA. They were Quakers so you might look into the Quaker records for some clues. I haven't traced any of this Knight family forward so don't know they some of Judith's siblings came on west with the Kirks. Judith's daughter ended up in Belmont Co., and maybe a brother but don't know if a brother or a cousin. Just a thought. John, In "Centennial History of Belmont Co. by A. T. McKelvey, pub. 1903 there is this: Businessburg is a little village located on Pipe Creek, hemmed in by hills that are almost as precipitous as mountains. It contains an old-time water mill, erected in 1848 by Archibald McGREW and Robert HAMMOND. In those days Pipe Creek supplied ample water power and for seven years the mill was thus operated. In 1855 staeam was introduced, and thereafter the mill was successfully operated for a period of 25 years by Allen RAMSEY, James SHIPMAN, Sylvester CREAMER, David McGREW, Isaac RICHNER and Thomas McNIECE, respectively. The great flood of 1884 nearly destroyed Businessburg. The waters of Pipe Creek rose to a height of 15 feet, and the town was practically submerged. Many houses were carried away and the loss was very heavy. There are three churches in and near Businessburg, namely: The Methodist Episcopal Church of Businessburg which is included in the circuit of Rev. Mr. BEVINGTON, with a membership of 30. About one and a half miles down Pipe Creek there is another Methodist Episcopal Church in charge of Rev. Thomas McGUIRE. In Businessburg there is also a Christian Church, with a membership of 25 or 30, under the pastorate of Rev. Mr. LUCAS. -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com>

Is there anything with this family that seems to come together with John W.? What was his wife's Mary maiden name. I wonder about that Mary Neff that was in the family he was enum. with. Perhaps they went to IL and he followed cause of Mary. I found no marriage for John W. or William in Belmont Co. to a Mary. There was a marriage of a John W., but that was in 1885 AFTER your John W. died. This is from "Genealogical Records in Belmont Co., OH" Vol. 5 (GRBC) From the Belmont Chronicle 12 Mar 1885 John W. Knight of Decatur IL, born and raised in Loydsville, d. on Feb 27th from injuries received in Jan in a collision on the Wabash RR upon which he was working as an engineer. He learned the machinist trade in the B. & O. shops in Bellaire. He had lived in the west about 15 years. Maybe there is something else you can use in that obit. He probably left Richland Twp. just before the 1870 census, so perhaps the John W. I found was he. Have you checked out the 1870 IL census to see if he was on it? -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com>
John and Elizabeth were in that area in 1860 Had son Robert who was in Civil War Other siblings but I dont know their names Any hellp appreciated
Does anyone know, or know of the History of Businessburgh.......Mead Twp ? When I visited the area this June, I talked to a gentleman up Pipe Creek from the townsite, and he said it (the town) was washed out in a flood in about 1921....What was the reason for its founding? Was it a coal town.....how long was it there? My G-G- Grandfather, John Lewis, came to Pipe Creek near Businessburgh in 1811 and died there in 1888....He was a Carpenter there in 1853 or so....We asked a couple of antique dealers in Barnsville, about Businessburgh, and they said they had never heard of it!! Is their a book I might buy giving a history of various towns in Belmont County? Any help would be much appreciated! John Lewis in Modesto, Ca

Trying desperately to find out anything about Ludwig Gust in Belmont Co. (probably around York Twp) about the turn of the century. His wife was Mary Sawyers. He had a son named Carl (born about 1920) who married Lucille McIntire. Would like to pinpoint where he lived and any other children's names. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. I would also be interested in such a History of Businessburg. There's a white block building there that people of the area use as a visual for where Businessburg was - they say it's a mine entrance. It doesn't sound like it was ever a large, bustling place but they talk about a couple of general stores that are no longer there. I've heard talk of at least 2 floods along Pipe Creek that swept houses, etc. away - one more recent - like in the 80's or 90's. Also heard about a once-popular nightclub type place - the Zanzibar (sp?) that is long-gone. I know there are some of list-members that reside there along Pipe Creek - can you help us out? Hi Still hunting for descendants and parentage of Nicholas Monroe who died in Belmont Co., Ohio 1853. Born about 1777 in PA. Children include: Samuel (Lydia Loller), George W. (Lydia Barrett), Richard (Rosannah ? ), Miller Nicholas (Amanda Martin), Curtis (Phebe ?), Eleanor (Moses Maring), John (Matilda Lambert), William (Margaret Anna ?), Rebecca (James Murphy) and Mary (William Hendershot). Mary, George, William and Eleanor went to Appanoose Co., Iowa. Miller's wife died, he remarried and was back in Monroe Co., in 1870. John was last found in Washington Co., OH. Samuel may have gone to Missouri. Curtis' wife died before 1843 and he died before 1869 but no record of him found during the intervening time. Richard died late 1849 or early 1850 in Somerset Township and family remained in Belmont Co., OH. Rebecca remained in Monroe Co., Ohio. Eleanor Monroe Maring descendants are well documented. One child of Curtis well-documented. His other son Martin Van Buren Monroe went to Roane Co., West Virginia. Have some information on William and George as well as some on Richard's family, but all very sparse. Would like to connect with descendants to share information and add to the data base for the descendants of Nicholas Monroe. My family emigrated to Belmont from Chester Co, PA, and I've noticed, while researching my own family, that many others left Chester for Belmont too....I've always wondered what the attraction was. My own family owned a large successful farm and mill, so they weren't moving for land of their own. Although the family had been Quakers, arriving with Penn in the 1680 (Nicholas NEWLIN), this branch of the family were no longer Friends. I've always wondered why they left. So, check Chester Co, too, while looking in PA. Need information on William H. Weeks born in Sept. 1834 somewhere in Virginia. Believe he married Arminta Higgs in Virginia. Know they were in Ohio Co., WV possibly Tridelphia in the 1860's. He owned a grist mill in Businessburg, Ohio after that & is in Bellaire, Ohio in the 1870 census. He died in approx. Aug., 1902 & is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Bellaire, Ohio. Have not been able to find William's parents or siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I don't know if this will help or not, but my ancestor Marium Davis Smith came from Bucks Co., PA. Many of the settlers in Belmont Co., were Quakers and came from Bucks Co., PA. There was also a lot of people from Indiana Co., Westmoreland Co., and Fayette and Washington Co., PA. Hi, I'm looking for information on the Richard Powel family. Richard Powel was born about 1810 in Ohio (probably Belmont County). He married Elizabeth LNU about 1832. Elizabeth was born about 1812 in Virginia. Richard and Elizabeth moved to Wood County, (West) Virginia sometime between 1833 and 1840. Their children include: 1) John M. Powell born about 1833 in Ohio. John married Delilah Dobbins April 19, 1854 in Pleasants County, (West) Virginia. Delilah was the daughter of James and Mary Ann Dobbins. 2) Alexander born about 1843 in Virginia. 3) William born about 1846 in Virginia. Living with them in Wood County in 1850 was R.D. Hinds who was born about 1838 in Virginia. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Thank you. Charlotte Lewin macslewin@aol.com
I believe my Davis's were in Belmont County by 1800 (give or take a few years). I wonder if anyone else researching that name in Belmont County knows where their Davis's were prior to moving there. Our family always thought Pennsylvania, but I don't know which county. I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching Davis's in Belmont County around 1800 (or prior) and whether they know their family's prior migration pattern.
