    1. [OHBELMON-L] Powell family
    2. Don Thomson
    3. I want to thank those who have been so resposive and helpful to my earlier inquiries re: John W. Knight. Incidentally, he married Mary Jones in West Zanesville, Muskingham County, Ohio, on 19 Sept 1866. Later, they were in Peoria, Illinois, for the 1880 census where John W. Knight was listed as 35; wife Mary 32; dau. Hannah 13, born in Ohio; son Arthur R., with measles, age 7, born in Indiana; and Claud(e) age 2 born in Illinois. In the 1900 census, Mary Knight and son Claude were living in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., Ill. Mary indicated that she was born in Jan 1848 in Ohio and that her three children were all living. Her son Claude was listed as born Feb 1878 in Ill. Never found any of them in the 1910 census of Ill., which is not indexed! Claude E. Knight was born 1 Feb 1878 lived to the age of 88 when he died 19 Oct 1966 in McLeansboro, Ill., and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cem. He had been married to Bertie Frye but had no children. Never succeeeded in tracing Claude's sibs. Don't know what became of Mary Knight after 1900; don't know when she died or if she was buried back in Ohio with her husband John W. 1. [OHBELMON-L] Powell Marriage
    2. Don, I need to check my records but Abner Powell of Monroe County had a son named Alfred b. abt 1813, I think, who married an Elizabeth. Perhaps your Alfred is a son of Abner's Alfred. The marriage date would be about right. Also, I have been doing some research in Shenandoah County, Virginia and have discovered an Alfred H. Powel in the early 1800's. I'm not sure how this Alfred might be related but since the name is the same, it might be worth looking into. Charlotte macslewin@aol.com

    3. Jerilyn... My STARKEY ancestor eventually moved to Ritchie Co., WV. I just received information from the 1900 Ritchie Co., WV census. In that census both parents of Mary Jane Starkey are listed as born in MD (Maryland). [Mary Jane Starkey was married to Elias D. (Eli) Pickering]. Mary J. was born May 1828 in OH. In 1850 Eli & Mary J. Pickering were listed in the Monroe Co., OH census. They lived in the household next to Samuel Neptune. Living in the household of Samuel Neptune was Eli's brother, Jonathan Pickering. I wondered why Jonathan was living with the Neptune family and did a little bit of research (and a very little bit) on the Neptune family. Samuel Neptune's wife was Mary Branson Pickering, sister of Jonathan and Eli Pickering. I learned that Samuel Neptune's parents were from MD. ...here's something to consider. Maybe the mother of the Starkey children was a widow who had remarried ... maybe to a Mr. Neptune. Let's keep plugging... Charlotte > Linda - Thanks for looking all the Starkey information up for me. I will > keep plugging away on this line. Am beginning to think that a Starkey family > came to Belmont and both parents died and left several kids as several people > are in the same boat as I am with people of this name and we all are getting > no where. 3. Hello List, So many of you have been so very helpful and have gone to great lengths to assist other fledgling genealogist so here is another request: Anna Maria Andres was married to John Jacob Kocher, Sr. and they came to Monroe/Belmont County from Switzerland. Was she later married to Urs Kanzig? Could Anna Maria Andres and Anna Maria Anderegg have been the same person? The list of children I have for both seem very similar. Secondly, I'm looking for Oneacre/Eyacher/Eiacher history. Anyone else working on this family? Thanks so very much, Jan

Supposedly the property was once owned by a Judge Swearingen. I found the following stones. 1. William Swearingen, Born October 30, 1768, Died July 4, 1841 Elizabeth Dawson, Wife of William Swearingen, Born February 29, 1762, Died February 14, 1848 2. Field stone laying on ground. No identifiable marking. 3. Fieldstone laying on ground. May be part of stone #2. No identifieable marking. 4. In Memory of George Dawson. (Stone obviously had no additional engraving, dates, etc) 5. In Memory of Elenor Dawson. (Same style stone as #4. No addtional engraving.) 6. In Memory of Eliza Swearingen. (No additional engraving) 7. Departed this life August the 15th 1826 Mathew Noely aged 76 years. 8. In Memory of Jane S Swearingen who died August the 13th 1823 aged 23 years 5 months 9. Here lies the body of Alexander Todd who departed this life October 7th 1810 aged 42 10. J. S. S. (no other engraving. Possibly a footstone for Jane S Swearingen) 11. M. N. (no other engraving.
