Looking for any descendants of John Wadsworth, found in 1820 Belmont Co., Ohio census with wife, 4 girls under 10, 2 boys under 10 and two teenage boys who are probably nephews. Part of the family may have moved to Vinton or Morgan Co., Ohio. Three daughters identified at this time are Martha Wadsworth Coffland, Emily Wadsworth Bailey and Rachel Wadsworth Ewers. Part of the family is found in Washington Co. Ohio in 1860, but can't find parents. John's wife is probably Ruth. Part of Emily's family ended up in Richland Co., Wisconsin. Any connections would be appreciated. I've gotten ahold of a land map showing owners - of Mead Twp, OH. My best guess is it is dated between 1852 & 1900 because of some of the owners names & land I know that was held by them. It's a photo-copy and whoever copied it cropped off the bottom - there are two boxes - one says "Boston - Atlas P.O. - Somerset Twp - Scale 300ft to an inch" where the '-' represents a new line. The next box says 'Hunter - ' - can't make out anything else in that box. It shows the P.O. Box offices - Key P.O., Vallonia P.O., Amber P.O., Wegee P.O., Businessburgh P.O. and Dilles Bottom P.O.. Any of you map buffs know where I might find an original or whether Boston or Hunter is the name of the map writing company? Any help will be appreciated. Nancy Peoria, IL
Last year I posted this on the group; it explains how to retrieve extracted marriage (1804-1879) and birth (1865-79) records from the familysearch.org website. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/O/OHBELMON+1999+370665924+F Wouldn't it make sense to locate these directions somewhere easily accessible on the Belmont Co. web page?
Works great - not only can you find an individual but if you follow the directions at that URL but instead of putting in an individual's last name - just leave the name blank & put in the batch number - you'll get the whole darn list! Thanx a heap! Nancy Peoria, IL
Thanks......the last notation, of William and Ann Smith Norris, is the one I'm interested in. I believe them to be the parents of my Martha Ann Norris (1831-1883) who married Dunham BERRY (1828-1907), in Belmont co, in 1852. I'm in search of William and Ann's parents. Dan, I tried to find a St. John's Catholic Church in Bellaire on Yahoo with no luck. These are the nearest to Bellaire: St. John's Catholic Church, 622 Main St., Benwood WV (304) 232-6455 1.7 miles away St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 295 Highway 7 N, Powhatan Point, OH (740) 795-4804 10.8 miles away. Maybe if you call the one in Powhatan Point, they can help you with the info. for the one in Bellaire...or call back the caretaker and ask him if he can provide a phone number for the church in Bellaire...or call LD info. -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com> Dan Grammer wrote: > Does anyone have a telephone number for someone associated with St. > Johns Catholic Church in Bellaire, who could provide me information on > burials at Mt Calvary Cemetery just outside of Bellaire. Does anyone have a telephone number for someone associated with St. Johns Catholic Church in Bellaire, who could provide me information on burials at Mt Calvary Cemetery just outside of Bellaire. I found out from a cousin this week that my great grandfather, John Cizewski (various spellings), is buried there on his son (Frank Cizeski's) plot without a tombstone. I talked to the care taker of the cemetery, who lives across from the cemetery. He was not much help, but he told me they had better records down at St. Johns. I would like to call and talk to someone at St. Johns before I travel there to see what they have. Thanks Dan Grammer

Thanks to Sandy Day, in Jefferson co, I have found the headstone of my great-great grandmother, Araminta Smith, who died in 1859 and is buried in the Emma Grove Cemetery in Hannibal. The headstone has an indentation in it, the shape of the federal shield (you know, the shape that surrounds the number on the highway road signs). You can see, in the indentation, that there was originally something attached to the headstone with 2 screws or brads, and it has been torn off, leaving just the indentation. For the life of me I can't figure out what could have been put onto a ladies gravestone in this shape. If it were a man's I'd think he had been in some branch of the armed services, or a member of some sort of a fraternal order...but, what could it have been on a woman's stone? I'd think the year, 1859, would be too early for it to have been some sort of a photograph....has anyone else had this experience, or any ideas of what it could have been? Sandra
Desperately looking for details on a Dr. McFadden. He was probably b. about 1820-1835, was probably practicing prior to 1850, probably practicing in one of these Ohio counties: Fairfield Co, Belmont Co., or Vinton Co. He married either Mary or Margaret Barnes, whose family was living in Fairfield Co, Ohio. They were married before the 1850 census. She was the daughter of Alexander Barnes and Mary Ann Rizer of Fairfield Co, Ohio. Thank You, Kathleen Rizer
Greetings list: I'm looking for obits, probably from the Barnesville Enterprise for the following: William H. Barnes: died 25 April 1914, Barnesville Isaac Barnes: died 9 Feb 1848, Barnesville Any suggestons? With my gratitude, Foster Barnes
No, Jerilyn, I can't identify your Phoebe Starkey. I have not yet been able to find the parents of Mary Jane Starkey (b. May 1828 in Ohio) ... so Mary Jane is the ONLY Starkey on my list. Mary Jane married Elias D. Pickering before the 1850 census was taken and was counted with her husband rather than with her parents. There is no record of the Pickering/Starkey marriage in Belmont Co. so it would seem that they married in Monroe Co. (where the Court House burned in 1867). They were found in the 1850 Monroe Co. census living in Enoch Twp. next to Eli's brother, Jonathan Pickering and his brother-in-law, Samuel Neptune (husband of Mary Branson Pickering). I have a collection of the census listings of Eli & Mary J. Starkey Pickering that traces them through their 50 years of marriage. [I will paste them below] As with many census records, some information is baffling! The 1880 census listing says that both Mary Jane's parents were born in PA ... the 1900 census says her parents were born in MD. I have a tendency to think that William & Letitia Starkey could be Mary Jane's parents. William Starkey was born about 1795 in PA and Letitia Kinsey Starkey was born about 1798 in MD. ...Charlotte ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1850 Monroe Co, OH Enoch Twp fam# 443 Pickering, Eli 23 OH Mary J. 27 OH 1860 Jefferson Twp, Noble Co, OH fam. # 2008 Eli Pickering 34 OH Carpenter Mary J. 32 OH Martha 5 OH Isaac F. 1 OH 1870 census Jefferson Twp, Noble, OH fam# 11 Eli Pickering 44 OH Carpenter Mary Jane 42 OH Martha 15 OH Ida 11 OH school Irena A. 8 OH school Alcina 7 OH school Francis M. 5 OH Stella M. 2 OH Louisa 2/12 OH 1880 CENSUS OF RITCHIE CO., WV by William Marsh Clay District page 37 E D PICKERING wm 54 Farmer b OH father b VA mother b NC Mary Jane wf 52 Wife Keep house b OH parents b PA Rena wf 18 Dau At home b OH Alcena wf 17 Dau At home b OH Francis M wm 15 Son Farmer b OH Stella wf 12 Dau At home b OH Louisa wf 10 Dau b OH 1900 Ritchie Co., WV Eli D Pickering h Jan 1826 74 M 50 OH VA NC Mary J w May1828 72 M 50 OH MD MD Stella d Jan 1868 32 S OH OH OH Wesa d Mar 1870 30 S OH OH OH > Charlotte - You don't happen to have a family in your Starkey group that uses > the name Phoebe or is missing a daughter born in 1810? Regards, Deannadrabkin@ex-pressnet.com > Deanna, From "History of Belmont & Jefferson Cos., OH" by J.A. Caldwell, pub. 1880 Barnesville Bios. ROBERT MILLS - Robert, a son of Benjamin MILLS, deceased, came to Barnesville in 1809. He was a saddler, the first in the place, and in later years purchased the Philip ALLEN tannery, managing for many years both trades, and connecting also farming and hotel-keeping with them. He married in 1812 Patience SHORT, a member of the family of James M. ROUND. Her parents died in Delaware when she was a small child, and she accompanied Mr. ROUND's family on their journey to Barnesville. This marriage is said to have been the first in Barnesville. She died in 1860, in her sixty-fourth year. He died in 1867, aged eighty-three. The Barnesville Enterprise of that date contained the following obituary concerning him: "Death of an Old Citizen - On Thursday last Barnesville lost one of her oldest and most respected citizens - Robert MILLS, Esq. - who died at his residence in this place, at the ripe old age of eighty-three. Robert MILLS was born in Lancaster county, Pa., came to Ohio in 1809, and settled at Barnesville one year after the town had been laid out. At that time two or three cabins marked the spot where now stands a flourishing town, and the bears and wolves frequently came to what now are the most prominent streets. For fifty-eight years Mr. MILLS resided in the town he chose in his early manhood, and witnessed all the changes that were wrought in that time. The men with whom he first worked and associated have long since passed away, and others were born and grew old while he remained. For many years he has been a landmark of the past, to whom every one paid reverence due to honorable men. Everybody who has lived in Barnesville remembers Robert MILLS, and all will bear testimony to his honesty and integrity. He was positive in his opinions and positive in expressing these opinions, yet no one doubted the honesty or the sincerity of the man. From his habits he admired the customs of the past, and thought the "good old days" were better for honor, truth and virtue than the latter years of his life. He died as he had lived, respected by all, and beloved by those who knew him well. Time nor space will not permit us to treat the subject as it deserves, and we hope some one better acquainted with the life and character of Mr. MILLS will furnish an obituary for publication." -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com> Let the threads that weave meaning through our yesterdays strengthen the tapestry of our tomorrows.
