Marc Marc, I am sending this also to the list as I believe before when I wrote to you, your ISP would not accept my message and it bounced. The book "Tombstone Inscriptions and Family Records of Belmont Co., OH" by Esther Weygandt Powell, I do not believe covers all cemeteries in the county. Not only that, but the readings for each cemetery are not necessarily complete either. Mrs. Powell mostly recorded the tombstones that were of people born before 1840, altho. there are some recorded for those born after that year. Since there are so many Davis in the book, I only looked on the pages for the Pease Twp. cemeteries (township where Martin's Ferry was/is located), but did not find a reading for William Morgan Davis' tombstone. -- Bonnie Burkhardt <burkhard@flash.net> <bburkhardt@juno.com> Let the threads that weave meaning through our yesterdays strengthen the tapestry of our tomorrows.
Does anyone on the list have any information about the following Powell? 1) Richard Powel was born about 1810 in Ohio (probably Belmont County). He married Elizabeth (?) about 1832. Elizabeth was born about 1812 in Virginia. Richard and Elizabeth came to Wood County, (West) Virginia sometime between 1833 and 1840. Their children include: i) John M. Powell born about 1833 in Ohio. John married Delilah Dobbins April 19,1854 in Pleasants County, (West) Virginia. Delilah was the daughter of James and Mary Ann Dobbins. ii) Alexander Powell born about 1843 in Virginia. iii) William Powell born about 1846 in Virginia. Living with them in 1850 was R. D. Hinds who was born about 1838 in Virginia. 2) James Powel was born about 1814 in Ohio (probably Belmont County). He married Delana (?) about 1839. Delana was born about 1824 in Ohio. James and Delana came to Wood County, (West) Virginia sometime between 1846 and 1847. Their children include: i) John Powell born about 1840 in Ohio. ii) Joseph Powell born about 1842 in Ohio. iii) James Powell born about 1846 in Ohio. iv) Sarah Powell born about 1847 in Virginia. v) Thomas Powell born about 1849 in Virginia. Living with them in 1850 is Mary Hinds who was born about 1810 in Virginia. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thank you, Charlotte macslewin@aol.com
Hi Jerilyn-found this in my outgoing messages, did you get it? My "to-do" basket is clear, so this was a surprise! Eleanor McCain Jerilyn - On page 22 of "Coffland Chronicles, The Coffland Family in America" by Patricia V. Mooney, 1978, she writes: George W. Coffland married 1) Martha Ann Wadsworth, daughter of John Wadsworth, in July 1844, in Belmont Co. By 1870, George & his family had moved to Richland Twsp. in the same county, where Martha died in 1879. I have them residing with parents James & Eleanor Coffland in 1850 in Goshen Twsp. and having 2 children, Emily E. b. ca 1845, and Wm. N. b. ca 1848. Martha was born ca 1829-1830. On page 52 of The Coffland Chronicles, Pat Mooney lists 1) Emily E. as born in 1846, in Belmont Co., believed to have married a James Bentley? 2) Her brother William Newton Coffland was born Mar. 22, 1848 In Goshen Twsp., mar. in 1879 to Anna Minerva Lochary. 3) brother Milton T. Coffland was born 1851 in Belmont Co. - never married. 4) brother Charles C. Coffland, b. June 21, 1856, Belmont Co. By 1880 had married Miriam L. Danford. 5) brother John S. Coffland b. June 2, 1862 in Belmont Co.,mar. Jan 6, 1885 to Mary Emma Coffland, a cousin. and 6) brother James Edgar or Edward Coffland, born 1864 In Belmont Co. , mar. a Bell ?. Lorraine - Guess I missed your initial lists of Will Abstracts. I assume that the numbers after the names indicate page numbers in the Abstract book; is that correct? Also is the Will Abstracts book available for public viewing, and if so, at what facility? Thank you for all of your hard work. I'm trying to sort out the Belmont County Powells. Here's where I am so far on William Powell who was married to Jane Kirkbride. I would be grateful for any additional information about William Powell and his children. William Powell married Jane Kirkbride Ward 13 Aug 1812 in Belmont County, Ohio. Jane Kirkbride married Aaron Ward 10 December 1801. Timothy and Aaron WARD purchased land in 1805 in Belmont County, Ohio. Aaron Ward died in 1807, his will was probated 4 May 1807. Belmont Co., Ohio - Chancery Book #1 June term, 1824 - page 18 Rhoda WARD, a minor who sues by Josiah DILLON, Jesse M. WARD, Martha WARD by Josiah DILLON their guardian vs: William POWELL, Reuben POWELL, Sally POWELL, James POWELL, John POWELL, Isaac POWELL, minors and children of the said William POWELL - June term, 1823. Plaintiffs of the county of Belmont. On or about 1805 Aaron and Timothy WARD of Belmont Co. made an agreement to purchase of the U.S. the NW 1/4 of Section 10, Township 5, Range 4 Marietta Dist....that it should be entered in the name of Aaron and he should have 100 acres on the north side and Timothy to have the 60 acres on the south of the said 1/4. Contrary to the agreement, Timothy entered to the said 1/4 section in his own name although Aaron paid the money for the first payment. In 1807 before further payment was made on the land Aaron died intestate leaving Jane WARD and his children, all minors under the age of 21. Jane WARD was appointed administratrix of the estate of Aaron WARD and soon after Timothy transferred the certificate for the said 1/4 S, to said Jane, and Jane completed the payment from the personal estate and obtained the patent in her own name, and conveyed the said land to Timothy. The Jane married William POWELL of Belmont Co. and had by him 5 children, Reuben POWELL, Sally POWELL, James POWELL, John POWELL, Isaac POWELL, minors under the age of 21. Jane died in July, 1822, the legal land title of the 100 acres of land went to the Ward and Powell children. William took possession of the said 100 acres and continued in possession of same and received the whole rents and profits.....Orators are entitled to the whole of the said 100 acres of land as heirs at law of said Aaron WARD and to an accounting of the rents and profits by William POWELL.....William POWELL contended that the rents and prof its were not sufficient to pay for the care and education of the WARD children after his marriage to their mother, said Jane, and said Jane died without making any conveyance of the said 100 acres.....it was ordered that the POWELLs upon arriving at the age of 21 make over a deed in fee simple for said premises to the said complainants. It would appear, when the property was returned to the Ward children, William Powell moved to Monroe County. There is a quit claim deed from Deed Book 7, page 102, 8 October 1846 - John Powell and Amelia Powell, his wife; Henry Ward and Sally, his wife; and Isaac Powell all of Monroe County - for $375.00 paid by Reuben Powell quit-claimed all their right, title and interest in the west side of a right line run from north to south through the center of the main street of Woodsfield to Smiths mill, bounded by the lot purchased of Samuel Guthrie by David Dye...to Isaac Jones lot. Since these appear to be Williams children, he must have died by October 1846. I have the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer for Kansas and I have to agree that it is the best I have found. DeLorme has a web presence now at the following URL... htt://www.delorme.com The price of these is very reasonable, I think I paid about $8-9 for mine at Office Max, even though there is a suggested price of $16.95 on the cover. -- Mary _____________________________________________________________________ ICQ - 3081831 mary.daily@bigfoot.com http://www.idir.net/~medaily/ _____________________________________________________________________ The world fears a new experience more than it fears anything. These atlases are very useful, and show the townships in each county within the state. I would assume that you could also get them at Amazon.com. > > S R C A > cott obert ranston nderson > phssra@physics.emory.edu
Lorraine: May I paint a picture for you? Imagine a person with a very low fixed income who desparately wants to find information about a family member? He/she cannot afford the travel or the expenses necessary to obtain the required information. So, they ask for help from others who might have that information. I have been fortunate enough to be able to help many of those people. I do not believe that they will be the caliber of customer that you would want. They cannot afford $15 an hour to have somebody do their work. My husband is also retired and we have a set income. However, we did manage to save some money during his working years and are now able to afford some of the research materials necessary to help me and to help others. I have purchased a number of books after seeing what a wealth of information is posted to the list. So, I wouldn't worry. People who see a family name is available in such a book are more likely to purchase that book for collateral lines or other family members who might be listed if they can afford it. If they can't, you have lost nothing because they wouldn't have been able to afford it in the first place. In an effort to sort out the early Powells of Belmont County, I did a little work on Abraham and Nancy Powell Lash, Jr. I'm hoping someone on the list will have more information or corrections to the following: 2) Nancy Powell born ca 1799 married Abraham Lash Jr. 12 Mar 1818 in Belmont County, Ohio. Nancy died in 1847 and is buried at Farmington Cemetery in Colerain Township. Abraham married Jane _____ after 1847. Jane was born ca 1800 and died in 1875. Abraham was born ca 1798/99 in Belmont County, Ohio and died in 1869. Abraham and Jane are also buried at Farmington Cemetery in Colerain Township, Belmont County, Ohio. Abraham Lash, Sr. came to Belmont County about 1797 from New Jersey. Children of Abraham and Nancy Powell Lash include: 3) William Lash was born 10 January 1819 married Isabella Sams/Sarns 27 August 1840. Isabella born ca 1819 died in 1890. William died in 1901. From: Tombstone Inscriptions & Family Records of Belmont County, Ohio - Esther Weygandt Powell Belmont County Marriages 1803 -1849 - Wes Cochran Belmont County Before 1830 - Catherine Fedorchak The LDS site has Nancy born in Pennsylvania. Does anyone on the list have any additional information on Abraham and Nancy Powell Lash and their children. Or better birth and death dates and places? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!! Charlotte Lewin macslewin@aol.com
I am looking for information on Mary Dickison who was the second wife of William Groves of Kirkwood Township in Belmont County. William (c. 1769-1845) was first married to Rebecca Moore (c. 1768-1831). They came to Belmont County c. 1800 and had eleven children: Joseph, William, Barnet, Nancy, Rebecca, Martha, Lavina, Margaret, Sarah, Rachel and Mary. On March 15, 1835, William wed Mary Dickison. Who were her parents? When and where was she born? Mary survived William. When and where did she die? Larry Dickerson
I know these are OH lists, but would anyone by chance have a copy of the 1850 West Virginia, Monongalia County Census. I'm told there are several Toothmans listed in the index - 292A-310B-320A-346B-352B. I'd be ever so grateful if someone would be kind enough to send me that detail. Thanx, Nancy Peoria, IL
Just a few things you ought to know about the will abstracts in general. 1. I kept the spelling as I saw it rather than trying to make it be "correct." So you will see names which obviously are something else. Plus you must keep in mind that these books, even though they are the ones which were microfilmed, seem to be copies of the originals. Therefore, you have the clerk, the transcriber, and me between you and the truth. I'm hoping we were all absolutely correct but know that flies in the face of reality. 2. With respect to names, in the first book (deed abstracts of Vol. G), I tried to group them and cross reference them. Then I decided that task was better left to the researcher. So it is wise to look through the whole list. 3. There is no guarantee about the significance of each entry in the index. Some of these people have a lot of references because they were often asked to be appraisers of estates or were justices of the peace. And sometimes (as in the list of physicians' accounts, which I found most interesting) it is only an indication that people by that name were living in the area. 4. Whenever property was referenced specifically, its description was always included in the abstract. 5. There is no consistency about the "additional" items that were abstracted. Sometimes I made notes regarding the fact that an inventory contained a "lot of medical books," or noted what jobs were done by recipients of payment (i.e., made coffin, dug grave) and other times did not, or included miscellaneous items that struck me as being somehow significant--like the note which got to me that the appraisers were so concerned about the destitute condition of the family that they decided that everything ought to be retained by the widow. The wills which spelled out relationships were marvelous and will be tremendous aids easily used. Other entries will require a little deduction and study. The wills that absolutely shortcircuited me were the ones where the husband/father refers to "my wife and children" and then neglects to mention a single name in the entire document. I kept holding my breath to the end and then wilted in despair when they remained anonymous. I guess he figured everyone would know who they were! Sorry to be going on about this. It's just that I get really carried away by what was sometimes available in these documents. And I kept wishing my third great-grandfather weren't so typically Scot and would break down and buy something at the estate sales, darn him anyway! =-} Well, enough. Hope you can use the index to determine if there is something useful for you in the book. Lorraine I. Quillon lorraineq@juno.com P.S. I have already determined one thing I will do differently for the next book. The names of the deceased for whom the probating is being done will be identified in some way, probably by an asterisk. Dear List Members: Would it help if I modified the index for the book "Will Abstracts, Belmont County, Ohio, Vols. A, B, and C (1810-1827) and serialized it on the list? I have prepared the "A's" of the index. If this is agreeable to everyone, I will send the remainder in sections. If there are problems with this or if there are suggestions as to how to do it better, let me know. ?IDD Charles - 120 ____ Abraham - 118 Agga's - 47 Bonam - 149 Charllota - 28 Mary - 7 Pennington - 148 Secny - 92 Widow - 189 William - 36 a DUDDLE Cornelus - 119 Thomas - 119 AAKINS Alexander - 133 ABELMAN - 42 ABLE George - 136 ACCERSON Thomas - 84 ACKERSON Charles - 102 ACKLES Charles - 7, 17, 38, 42 James - 181 ACKLIN Robert - 131 ACTKINS Abraham - 121 ADAMS George - 33, 39, 186 John - 23 William - 33, 39 ADKINS Abraham - 132, 151, 182, 189 John - 164 ADKINSON Enos - 150 ADUDOL Alexander - 61 AGILBEE Ann S. - 134 AIKINS N. or Z. - 194 AIRS William - 97 AISBILL William - 150 AKENSON George - 71 AKINGS Robert - 39 AKINS Robert - 39 AKISON George - 122 ALBAN George - 58, 160, 161, 170, 188 ALBEN Benjamin - 60 George - 15, 87, 154, 180 ALBINSON William - 53 ALBON George - 25 ALBRIGHT David - 69, 179 ALBURTIS John - 146 ALENDER Nicholas - 69 ALEXANDER Agness - 48 Andrew - 48 Elizabeth - 48 Genet - 48 Humphrey - 2, 39, 185 Issabella - 2 James - 7, 8, 17, 23, 34, 37,44, 45, 48, 53, 54, 65, 72, 77, 94, 97, 107, 125, 134, 137, 144, 185, 192 James, Junr. - 48, 67 James, Senr. - 48 Jane - 2, 23 Jean - 81 Joan - 48 John - 3, 4, 8, 48, 52, 53, 81, 123, 134, 172, 179 Jos. - 188 Joseph - 104, 115, 128, 143, 152, 191 Margaret - 48 Mary - 48 Nicholas - 69 Peter - 23, 48, 83 Robert - 23, 24, 42, 45, 48, 77, 93, 99, 111, 126, 127, 130, 134, 146, 181 Robert Al. - 2 Stephen - 59 Thomas - 2, 42, 45, 48 ALFORD J. - 127 James - 187 Jonas - 104, 120 Josias - 83 ALLBRIGHT Mary - 66 ALLEN - 154 Benjamin - 58, 60, 63 Daniel - 123 Isaiah - 27, 29, 56, 139, 148 Iseah - 18 James - 116 John - 55, 75, 122, 125, 130, 139, 175, 176 Jonethan - 151 Myers - 59 ALLER John - 55 ALLEY Levi - 190 ALLFATHER Adam - 100 ALLISON John - 122, 132, 165, 182 ALTFOTHER Adam - 55 AMARINE Frederick - 25 AMBLER Peter - 79 White - 179 William - 70, 72, 187 AMMONS J. - 194 John - 193 AMRINE A. - 195 Abraham - 5 Henry - 154 John - 42, 103 Peter - 103 ANDERSON - 19, 175 Absalom - 1, 59-61, 82, 83 Asa - 1 Catharine - 106 Cavy - 1 Georg - 181 George - 103, 181, 182, 195 Hugh - 106 Humphrey [Humphery] - 1, 131 Isaac - 130 J. - 144, 194, 195 Jacob - 139 James - 9, 23, 55, 93, 98, 103, 130, 154, 186 James Craig - 14 John - 5, 14, 23, 26, 33, 37, 55, 97, 106, 150, 154 Joseph - 6, 8, 13, 48, 75, 76, 109, 123, 138, 144, 145, 174, 192 Joseph L. - 81 Judge - 169 Linny - 106 Mary - 106 Matthew - 3 Milley - 126 Milly - 47, 54 Nancy - 14 Rebekah - 14 Rev.
