There was a marriage between Alfred H. Powell and Ann E. Knight in 1965 in Belmont Co., Ohio. Ann was living in Lloydsville in 1866 according to old family letters. Nothing further is known about her, but suspect she may have died soon after 1866. The reason for this conclusion is information that appears in the civil war pension file for Alfred H. Powell. However, his home was in Bridgeport, Belmont Co., Oh. He enlisted 30 August 1861 and served with E 15 Ohio Infantry; later served additional time. He filed an application for a pension in 1883 but was denied because he had no widow and no child under the age of 16. On 20 Oct 1883 his age was given as 42, a resident of Bridgeport, Ohio. He died 15 July 1884 and was buried with Masonic-Knight Templar-honors--location not stated. Was there only one Alfred H. Powell from Belmont County? Do any cemeetery inscriptions include Ann E. Powell buried in Lloydsville ca. 1870? Sharon, you might try to send a letter to the Bethesda North Main Street Church of Christ to see if anyone from that church might have records. My grandmother attended the Hunter church in her early years and later the Bethesda church. The records might have been transferred there or to the Bethesda South Main Street Christian Church. My great grandparents Mahlon and Rebecca Turner Wood are buried in the Hunter Church of Christ cemetary so I would be curious as to what records are available also. Janice Elias

She was born 1856 in W.Va., died 1921, & is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Belmont, Co., OH. Laura's parents were James Lewis & Mary Gordon from VA. I have to tell everyone. My letter that I sent out several days ago to the Hunter Church of Christ was returned to me as "not Deliverable as addressed Unable to forward." I used the address that I found on the AOL yellow pages. Any suggestions where I might look for a Scottish widow's grave or death date whom I think died in Jefferson/Belmont County circa 1798-1800 probably next to the Ohio River, possibly near Wheeling WV? Her son is recorded in the Jefferson/Belmont tax list of 1802 and 1803 as being "on the Ohio River". Chris, Scotch Ridge Cemetery has a James Clark - wr5r- d. Jan. 17,1826 aged 96-10-22. James Clark: d. Jan. 17,1826, aged 96-10-22 b. Feb.25,1729). Buried in Scotch Ridge Cemetery beside the church. Wife- Isabella. A daughter, Jennetta (b. 1764-d. 1820). Jennetta m. John Mitchell ( one of the three pioneer Mitchell brothers) on whose Scotch Ridge farm the Short Creek Congregation was organized. Another daughter, Nancy (b. 1768- d. 1863) , m. Thomas Mitchell, another Mitchell brothers. Has anyone on the list located a resource for final pension payment records relating to Belmont Co, pensioners-in my case, for the War of 1812 service. Found a wonderful book of final payment vouchers for the Baltimore area, abstracted from Nat'l Archives records(1814-1864), BUT the Archives insists they can't locate the files. However, if they existed for Baltimore soldiers/widows/children then they must have existed for other parts of the country. My interest is in Belmont Co. pensioners, as well as Brown Co. IN. Chris, There is a trustee of the Scotch Ridge Cemetery who has read all the readable markers in this cemetery. Paul Pickens in Martins Ferry, OH. Sorry, I have lost his phone number, but I am sure he is in the directory. He can also tell you if your family member was a member of the Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church for which he has records that go back to sometime in the 1800s. They still have church services there when the weather permits (it is at the top of a very steep hill). If this cemetery has not been published, it might be a good idea if someone in Belmont co might try and persuade him to have his data posted to the Belmont GenWeb page. Of course, it would have to be copywrited to him. I felt like I was bothering him when I asked my questions, so, maybe he would be greatful to have it published.
