    2. Shelley Hill
    3. Hi All My family were Belmont Quakers. They belonged to the Stillwater Friends Thomas Williams & Prudence moved to Belmont about 1807 Prudence planted what was to have been the largest apple tree in Belmont county. It lasted till July 10, 1896 when it blew down. Joseph Camden of New Jersy heard of the tree and asked for wood to ake souveniers. Some was sent to our family, urns, caese, goblets which were highly ptized. They say only one still exists in Jay county Indiana. Thomas & Prudence had 7 children out f those came George who married Rachel White fromthem came John who married Lovica who had a daughter named Clarkie she married Joseph Williams and had a daughter Dequestonie Emily (my great grandmother) who married a german named George William Blocker. If any of these sound like family or you can provide me with any information please let me know. And ye though I am Quaker I do belong to their web site where I found 7 cousins. I thought I'd break the pattern and see if you had any info you could share. Thank Shelley (in Juneau Alaska)

    2. Charles A. Steinman
    3. My gggg grandfather Charles Fryman came to Beaver Twp., Guernsey Co. at sometime in the period 1822-1830. He sold his property in 1822: 7 Sept 1822 Fryman, Chas. to Booth, Edwin Vol J. Page 73, St. Clairsville, Lot 28 $90.00 He had been living in the St. Clairsville area at the time of the 1820 census, and was listed as follows: 1820 Belmont County, Richland Twp., Census, p223 Charles Fryman 1- male over 45 yrs (Charles) 1-female under 10 yrs (Mary's child by a former husband?) 1-female bet 26-45 ( Mary Camp Fryman) This is believed to be an account of Charles' arrival in America: "Jacob Freymann came to Philadelphia, PA from Germany via Rotterdam on Sept 27, 1746 on the ship Ann Galley . The Captain was William Wilson. Johann Henrich Carl Freymann (Charles Fryman) was a two+ year old who accompanied his father Johann Jacob Freymann (Jacob Freymann), his mother and his four+ year old brother, Johann Philipps Freymann (Philip Fryman, Sr.) " He was listed in the 1830 Census as follows: 1830 Census Beaver Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio, pg 361 Charles Fryman Males of 100 yrs and upward -1 (Charles was 86+, but not 100 in 1830) Females of 5 yrs and under 10 -1 (?New child since 1820 Census, but probably not Charles') Females of 10 and under 15 yrs -1 (The child in the 1820 Cen) Females of 40 and under 50 yrs -1 (Mary Camp Fryman) Charles died some time after 1830 and before 1840 as his widow was listed in the succeeding census records as follows: A Cavanaugh researcher, Robert D. King, BobKing@northlink.com, provided the following: " In doing our Cavanaugh research, we found: Widow Fryman living next door to Timothy Cavanaugh in 1840 @ 70 to 80 yrs with a daughter, she was listed as Mary Fryman in 1850 @ 80 yrs, b. in Pa. and she is 93 in 1860 and living with the Cavanaughs. In all three census years she was found in District # 106, Franklin Twp, Monroe County, Ohio" Anecdotal information has pod of Charles as Elk Twp., Noble Co. and pod of Mary Camp Fryman as Seneca Twp., Monroe Co. I have not been able to pinpoint the location of Charles' property in Beaver Twp. or where that property can be found on current maps, or the relevance of Mary's locations in Franklin Twp., Monroe Co. or possibly Seneca Twp. Monroe Co. If Charles was really over 100 years of age in 1830 I would think that it would have come to the attention of early historians of the area. Any help you friendly people can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    3. Got this from another list! I thought someone might be interested in this!! Please feel free to forward this to anyone you feel may be interested in joining. Of course the more people we have the more help we will be for each other. Please keep in mind that we are only a few days old and if your lookup request is not answered, try again in a week or two. Some of the state lists have already reached over 150 subscribers <G> Others have not been "advertised" as much and have fewer members. Hang in there and don't get discouraged if your not answered right away, these lists will be a great asset to our research after we reach the people and let them know that these lists are available. I am encouraging everyone to send this email to their surname and county mailing lists as well as to our cousins. Finally, If you have the material to help a fellow researcher, please use it. Thanks, Kelly Kellygirl3398@mpinet.net (Subscription information at the end of this e-mail) Guidelines for posting to the lists: Established 11 October 2000 EMAIL SUBJECT LINES: COUNTY,YEAR,SURNAME NO FLAMING or you will be unsubbed without notice. By this I mean not only being rude or mean to each other but there will be NO and I do mean NO debating here about the Census Projects. This list is for everyone who wants to research. NO General requests such as "all Smiths in all counties" Be specific, Name the County, Family you are looking for and also the year. Try to supply as much info as possible. LIMIT your requests to ONE PER CENSUS YEAR and SURNAME My Mama taught me that Thank you and Please are always nice too :) A few people have emailed me asking how to sign up for the new lists and what to do. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. All lists are XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-D-request@rootsweb.com The XX is to be removed and the two letter abbreviation for the state you are looking in added in its place. Examples: MI-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com CA-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com IL-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L-request@rootsweb.com 2. So, send an email to the one of your choice (make sure to have the state). Put NOTHING in the subject line. In the body of the email write only: subscribe Then send it on :) 3. POSTING to the new census lists: A. Send it to XX-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com (supply the two letter state code for the XX again) B: Subject line MUST have the following: County/Year/Surname Example: Saginaw/1850/Smith C: In the body of the email: List whom you are looking for. Supply as much information as you can. Birthplace, ages, occupation, etc. D: Mail it on! That's it folks :) I hope that helped. I have put the list of states and two letter codes below for you. AL Alabama AK Alaska AZ Arizona AR Arkansas CA California CO Colorado CT Connecticut DC District Of Columbia DE Delaware FL Florida GA Georgia HI Hawaii ID Idaho IL Illinois IN Indiana IA Iowa KS Kansas KY Kentucky LA Louisiana ME Maine MD Maryland MA Massachusetts MI Michigan MN Minnesota MS Mississippi MO Missouri MT Montana NE Nebraska NV Nevada NH New Hampshire NJ New Jersey NM New Mexico NY New York NC North Carolina ND North Dakota OH Ohio OK Oklahoma OR Oregon PA Pennsylvania RI Rhode Island SC South Carolina SD South Dakota TN Tennessee TX Texas UT Utah VT Vermont VA Virginia WA Washington (state) WV West Virginia WI Wisconsin WY Wyoming

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Re: Cemetery Safety
    2. Ellen Rowan Taylor
    3. I find the conversation about cemetery safety quite interesting, and glad it took place. I was in Belmont County about a year ago, and went to 2 cemeteries. Taggert, and one in St.Clairsville, the name escapes me at the moment. My biggest concern, especially at Taggert, was stepping in a hole and breaking my leg, because it is so isolated. The other one was in town, and very quiet. In hind sight, I think it would be a good idea not to travel alone. It is a sad commentary on our times, that we can't feel safe any where, and even sadder that so many people, even as peaceful a group as genealogists, think they have to go around carrying guns. Does anyone know if there has ever been an incident in a Belmont County cemetery? Ellen Rowan Taylor Searching PATTERSON, ROBB, & BOYD in Belmont County.

    2. Sorry, I didn't mean to cause an avalanche on safety. I just wanted to know if I had over reacted to what he said. I live in a large suburb of Chicago, but grew up in a town of 800 and still believe in the decency of people and it really took me aback when he told me they weren't safe in that area at all. Have since been given a lot of advice, but guess I will just wait and go with someone or bring my husband with me next year. I hadn't thought about dogs either and that probably bothers me more than the people problem-considering I am a grandmother. Thanks for all the help. 3. One time I went to a small church cemetery near a busy city, and had a large dog run up on me, growling its head off. Looked like he was ready to jump me. I was by myself and had to rely on instinct -- I just stared the dog down while its owner was yelling for it to come (owner's house was about 100 yards away). I had a 35 mm camera with a neck strap and if that dog had moved a step closer than 3 yards it would have had a camera upside its head. Eventually the dog backed off. But it sure as heck was a long two minutes. It was only later that I found out I had done the right thing -- if I had turned and ran, the dog would have instinctively attacked me. So it's not just humans you need to watch out for in cemeteries. Maybe in addition to a cell phone, you can take along a small can of mace or something like that. (I wouldn't think a large dog would care much if there's one or two or three people). In these days of pit bull popularity, one can't be too careful. Tom Bishop

    3. Laurence, Though I believe in the Second Amendment, I cannot believe this to be an answer to the problem of safety in cemeteries. There is safety in numbers and no one needs to flash a side arm in a cemetery. I can see the headlines now: "Gun Toting Granny Accidentally Shoots Cemetery Lawnskeeper." We are looking to preserve our cemeteries not fill them up faster. Although owning a gun is our right, it should also come with the knowledge of how to care for and use it. Most people I am afraid know neither. Carrying a weapon you are not familiar with for your own safety, puts yourself and others at risk of accidental discharge. I would advocate taking a cell phone and a friend before taking a weapon with you to a cemetery. 'nuff said. 3. Jerilyn, It is a sad statement of the times that one cannot feel safe inside a cemetery but it is too true that some people do get taken advantage of in them. I'm sure the gentleman you met was concerned for your safety and I would always urge anyone to not go alone into a cemetery. I live further north in Canton, OH and we have had reports of people being molested in cemeteries that are very upscale and in full view of roadways and during the day. There is a trial that just took place of a boy who robbed a women at gunpoint in one of our best cemeteries so none are immune to this type of crime. Even those out in the country may be at risk. It is for this reason I urge any cemetery hoppers to always do it with a friend or relative unless you are sure you can take care of yourself or live with the possibility of a confrontation. He was my fourth great grandfather. While taking pictures of the Old Presbyterian Cemetery behind the Methodist church is Beallesville a man told me that he didn't think it was safe for a woman alone to go into that area to take pictures and that I needed several or a man with me. I have been all over Monroe Co. taking cemetery pictures down in Perry Township and that area without a problem and had just been at the Harmony cemetery south of Beallesville without any fear. What I need to know is there a real reason I can't do this or is he being over cautious? I am here in the area from outside of Chicago. Came last year and did some areas I needed and was wanting to fill in some more holes, but guess I can't. Please advise me. It runs south about a mile, to just east of Coleraine, until it crosses Martins Ferry Colerain Rd., which it then follows. They both run southeast/east for three miles until they run into OH 647.
