    1. [OHBELMON-L] Joseph Medley and Egypt Valley
    2. John D & Peggy Ledrich
    3. Hi List and Relatives, I was just curious to know if anyone could tell me if there is a map available of the Egypt Valley Wildlife Area. Does anyone know if the old cemeteries were documented, I understand that they are still intact. And that there are still some old ruins of homes that were in the Kirkwood Twp. area. To the descendants of Joseph Medley, has anyone tried to pinpoint the old Medley homestead. Or one of the sons homesteads. I know there are deeds to properties with co-ordinating information, could we find a plot map to match the deed boundaries. Maybe the Egypt Valley didn't destroy the family plot? Let me know if there is any interest to find the property lines. John D. Ledrich

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Children's Home
    2. Hi Connie , I found the records index for the Belmont County Childrens Home on microfilm (GR-3903) at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio: http://www.ohiohistory.org/index.html . The Home was located in Tacoma, North of Barnesville, and was open from 1880 to 1981. It was demolished in 1996. I have an old article about the Belmont County Children's Home from several years ago. The article contains an address where the records were located in St. Clairsville: The Belmont County Childrens Services Board 410 Fox Shannon Way St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950 Phone: 740-695-3813 Hope this is helpful!! Good luck with your search! My mother was placed there from 1938 to around 1944. Her nephew and niece were both adopted from the home while she was living there. Any help would much appreciated. Connie

    3. A follow up on this great site - make sure to look at the data pages accompanying any set of photos you view. The research done often contains extensive info on the history of the property and the area with a lot of info specific to the families involved. The drawings also frequently contain a map of the area in addition to diagrams of the property. I looked at a house in the town where I grew up and 22 pages of documentation later I knew more about the family than I ever did living in the town! It's just a shame not everything listed is digitized yet. 1. [OHBELMON-L] Belmont Co. Children's Home
    2. There have been some requests on this list regarding the Belmont County Children's Home. There is some info available at the Ohio Historical Society (GR 3903 -- whatever that stands for). The Belmont County Children's Home was demolished in 1990. Some records from 1880 to 1981 of Register of Admittances and Indentures can be found at the Belmont County Department of Human Services, 310 Fox Shannon Place, St. Clairsville OH 43950 (740-695-1074). A small cemetery still exists near the site of the former Children's Home near Barnesville. Hope this helps. Barb

I heard that all the records of the children's home were now at the Belmont county building in St. Clairsville, Ohio ...Also heard that that they did have a reunion at one time....I believe it was last summer that I read where they had a reunion...In an article in the paper they all seem to have good memories of the home...

Hi Sean - not directly, I don't have them myself, at least not that early, but I ran across them too; I think they were next door neighbors or something of my Noble TAYLOR 1776-1848. I think their founding father was a Nathan - probably Nancy's grandfather. But what I want to say is, look for Anne or Anna - Nancy at that time was often (usually?) a nickname for one of those. Jan

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Jane Crozier - wife of James
    2. Nancy Albritton
    3. I've been given the tidbit that Jane Crozier (died 1869, age 70) was buried in St Clairsville Union Cemetery - would anyone have the records for this cemetery that could see if there is any confirmation that this Jane Crozier was Jane Clarke Crozier (married to James Crozier on 9 Feb 1837 in Belmont Co) or if James is buried next to her? This would have been a second wife to James. His first was Christina Armstrong (died 1836) - we've been unable to find where either Christina or James has been buried. James died in Oct 1850. I've contacted the Belmont United Presbytarian Church/Cemetery - thinking he'd been buried there, but have received no response. Any help in finding where James Crozier and/or Christine Armstrong Crozier are buried will be very much appreciated. They lived on Crozier Ridge above Businessburg. Nancy Albritton

    1. [OHBELMON-L] Catholics in Belmont
    2. Sandra Ferguson
    3. Many, many marriages of this time period were not registered at the courthouse, and it wasn't required, by law, till much later. So, for marriages not listed , you must find church records, family bible records, etc. I can't find anything on Catholic Churches in Belmont till about the 1840s, but that's not to say there wasn't one...or, more probably, a "traveling" priest who visited many areas and had no main church building. Perhaps someone else will know of other Catholic congregations in Belmont co, early on. -----Original Message----- From: BPerk930@aol.com <BPerk930@aol.com> To: ferg@intelos.net <ferg@intelos.net> Date: Wednesday, January 03, 2001 12:55 PM Subject: Re: [OHBELMON-L] Dovenberger, Mitchell, Berry Sandra, Did people frequently m. without registering in the courthouse? I've been researching in Washington co. and find that most people are married by a JP and register at the courthouse. I hadn't considered that they might not.....I notice that there were many Irish immigrants in Belmont. Robert was supposedly b. Ireland. Does this mean that, in the early 1800s, there were Catholic churches there? Brenda

    1. [OHBELMON-L] MCGILTON, Phillip
    2. Has anyone seen a cemetery list or anything at all giving a location or date for Phillip's death. The last trace I have of him was in the Captina area in 1874 with wife Emalinda. He had to have been somewhat elderly at the time however I have not found anything thus far refering to the death or burial of either him or his wife. I am interested in any of the MCGILTON (various spellings) surname. It appears that Phillip was my ggggrandfather b 1800-1810 PA. I would be most appreciative of any assistance and thank those who have already checked the information they have available to them.
