I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on declarations of intent to file for US citizenship in the 1840's before I run off on a wild goose chase. My ancestor's brother became a US citizen in Belmont County in 1849, although I have not been able to turn up a declaration of intent despite the kind assistance of a list subscriber. Were aliens who wished to become citizens *required* to file a DI before their citizenship request could be considered? If so, did it have to be in the same municipality/county/state in which they later filed for citizenship, and is there anywhere else I should/could look in Belmont County other than the courthouse? Thanks for any/all help with this... -- Tim Capstack laurantim@earthlink.net

I'm going to try to go through this book and pick out the names of the early settlers of each township, and other names I find. Colrain; settlement as early as 1788. Abner Barton had a farm, first bought from the government by Wells and Satterthwaite in 1788... Hugh Parks estabished a tannery. Richare Harris had the first flour mill in 1803-4. J. G. Hanes also had a mill, southeast of Colerain Village. Burton Stanton supplied the logs to build the mill; Farmington, laid out in 1818 by Daniel McPeak...early occupants were the Bundys, Mortons, Mitchells, Berrys and Dunlaps. Colerain village, founded by Friends who emigrated largely from NC and VA to escape slavery...among the early families were the Steers, Copes, Baileys, Hirsts and berrys...they came from Louden and Frederick Cos, Va. the Pickerings came from VA; the Howards and Steels from NC; the Millhouses, Vickers, Malins and Whartons from PA. Horton Howard was a well known minister; Geo. Smith was also a minister; Josiah Fox moved here in 1814, but was disowned for building war ships. The families of Given, French and Wright were also early Quaker families. There were also a large number of Scots-Irish amongt the early imigrants; Bartons, Majors, Wells and Wrights, John S, Williams was later the editor of the American Pioneer, in Cincinnati. Pleasant Grove; established by John Anderson in 1820. about 1800 an old hunter hamed Peter Babb lived there Churches; Methodist Epsicopal...Farmington...Scott, Johes and Lovman were early ministers Seceders" and Covenanters' churches...Seceders'; early meetings held at the farm of Rev. Hello, Thanks to everyone who responded about my obituary on Margaret Griffiths. I learned that Margaret and William Griffiths were members of the Welsh Congregational church. I looked on the Internet and can't seem to find anything about it. I also looked in the LDS Family History Library catalog and found nothing. Does anyone know if their records are available for searching? William and Margaret Griffiths had six children, Thomas, David, Mary or Beatrice, Sarah, Anna and William. I think Thomas and David died before their mother died in 1934 because they are not listed as survivors. The girls all married, so I would like to know if they were married at the Welsh congregational church. One married a HUGHES, another a WRIGHT and another an IRVIN. William Griffiths, the youngest was still living at home when his mother died, though he was in his thirties. I'm curious to know what happened to them. I may have living cousins in Ohio somewhere??? Thanks for any help. Shanna sjones@redrock.net

I apologize up front if this is not the list it came from, BUT on one of the *many* geneology lists I subscribe to *someone* (I don't know who) was doing research on the KLEE family. Today I ran across a copy of a KLEE history - Ancestry - Genealogy in my pamphlet file. If you have a name, I'd be happy to look it up. Sandra, I am wondering if you could lookup to see if there is anything mentioned about the Johnston/Johnson of Belmont Co. I will narrow your search by telling you some first names. I have a George Samuel married to an Annie McKirahan in Belmont Co before 1885. An Abraham Jackson Johnston (his brother) married to an Ada White. They migrated from WV sometime around 1880. They were both born 1854 and 1856. I have a fathers name of either John married to a Susan Day or a Marion? Conflicting information. I am trying to find out what year that they arrived in Belmont and if their father John? came with them. I know how hard Johnston is to track. I appreciate any time you have for this lookup. Thanks, Sally Havens
