Some years back I was looking through some St. Clairsville newspapers, about the year 1836, and saw that my ancestor John Bishop was mentioned as having been paid for putting new shingles on the poorhouse. So there's something like a yearly Commissioner's report that appeared in the newspaper and would list the people who the county (Belmont) paid for various services. I pretty sure it didn't list the 'inmates' or 'patients', though. But the newspapers are available on interlibrary loan from the Ohio Historical Society and you never know what you might find. Hi Cindy - I do not have their children but I do have 'Pheve' (probably a mistake) DURNAL married to Josiah Wilson. Phoebe or Pheve's sister Harriet DURNAL ca 1811 - 8 Oct 1834 was the first wife of my greatgreatgrandfather, George Washington TAYLOR 1806-1864. Harriet died young too, as you see, and I descend from George's second wife, but I have a little more on DURNAL if you need it. Cindy, I have an exact transcription of an indenture bond for a 7 year old child who was "bound out" of the same Washington County Poorhouse in NY state where my own g-g-grandmother lived as a child of the same age. It is posted at http://www.poorhousestory.com/INDENTURE_BOND_Explanation.htm on my website (The POORHOUSE STORY). Since this was a legal document (IF a formal indenture process was followed)... you may be able to track the bonds down with county officials. However, occasionally these removals of children from poorhouses was done informally. I thought you might like to see the terms and language used in these indenture bonds for children. Good Luck! We would like to invite you to visit The POORHOUSE STORY website (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses)at http://www.poorhousestory.com Thanks to many of the Ohio "listers" who volunteered to do the transcribing, we have a New Year gift. We just published the WPA Inventory of Poorhouse records for BELMONT County. For history fans and genealogy buffs alike ... we think you will enjoy these. Here is a description: --------------------------- During the 1930's and 1940's the Work Projects Administration (WPA) began the process of inventorying County Archives of Ohio. Their work was cut short when funding elapsed prior to World War II, but several volumes were published. The Columbiana County edition states: "The inventories produced by the Historical Records Survey Program attempt to do more than give merely a list of records--they attempt further to sketch in the historical background of the county or other unit of government, and to describe precisely and in detail the organization and functions of the government agencies whose records they list. The county, town, and other local inventories will, when completed, constitute an encyclopedia of local government as well as bibliography of local archives." ... While these records may no longer be stored in the vault, it is proof that they did exist at the time the book was compiled. It may take some digging, but chances are good that the records can be found. The WPA Inventories were never totally completed for all counties in Ohio. ... They are unavailable today except in most major Ohio libraries, where a complete set will usually be found. page 60 OHIO GENEALOGICAL GUIDE 6th Edition by Carol Willsey Bell, C.G. --------------------------------- Note: Of the 27 counties whose WPA Inventories included Infirmary (poorhouse)records ... we have now posted the excerpts from 12 of them and are working on the others. My name is David Hinton and I am seeking information on my ggg-grandfather William Hinton who lived in Belmont County in the early 1800's. He was born in Maryland in 1764 and married Rachael Sheppard Sept 17, 1811. They had 4 children: Josiah ( my gg-grandfather),Lydia, Vina, and Mary. It is my understanding that William may have died in Belmont County in 1848. I am seeking evidence of that event and confirmation from census sources that he did in fact live in Belmont County in 1830 and 1840. I have found his name in Census Indexes but I would like to have confirmation with references to the children. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Contact me at dhinton@worldshare.net.
I also thought that this Elizabeth had to be a sister of Daniel and Sarah, but in Daniel Sr's will he states that his daughter Christine was married to a Brady and she is dead by 1842 when he dies, but I also think that the first wife of William Preston Brady must have also died by that time which makes me wonder. Surely Daniel knew the names of his own children. He did have a daughter Elizabeth, but she was married to a Hendricks according to his will. Now was Christina a Christina Elizabeth? I have records of the family with the listing of the children, and there is no indication that she had a middle name. Also in the sale of lands for Christina, Daniel's, and Sarah's brother and father a John Brady is always there to buy household items, but perhaps he was a grandson. I only know that Christina's children were underage when Daniel, Sr. died as he left 1/11 of his estate to her minor children. Now where did this Elizabeth come from as Daniel Brewer was the only Brewer in the county of Indiana/Jefferson at this time. He most likely was the son of Abraham Brewer of Northumberland Co. PA. Think he had a brother Henry and George and sisters Elizabeth and Catherine according to Brewer historians -- hearsay mostly. The Elizabeth who was a sister of the elder Daniel is too old to be married to William Preston so this is one of my main mysteries. I am the descendant of Sarah Brewer who married Archibald States.
