    3. Colleen, Is this possibly Patrick's family? 1920 U. S. Census - Bellaire, Pultney twp., Ohio - ED 41, pg. 181B, sheet 7B, 5 Jan. 3562 ? (street) 98-140 Pat Flannigan 55 Marr. OH IRE IRE John son 17 Sing. WV IRE IRE Glass Worker Bottle House It was illegible as to whether Michel and Pat were married. There was definitely an "M" to indicate that Mary and Margaret were married. But if so, where were their husbands? And why was their name Flannigan? This Pat at age 31 is a little too old. But they are definitely in the right place. Was Sarah's maiden name Kennedy? Or was that her married name? If this is the right Pat, they weren't married as of 1920 apparently. I tried to find a Sarah with a Joseph, Leonard and Catherine. Also could not find Pat in the 1910 Ohio Miracode Index, so perhaps they were in WV then. I did not find Pat's and Sarah's marriage record in Belmont Co. Marriage books abstracted by Wes Cochran for the years 1903-1917. That is as far as the records were transcribed. Nothing in Monroe Co. either up to 1917. Have you seen the 1930 census for the boys in New York? I took a look at it. Their birthplaces were all NY with father NY and mother PA. Could have been a mistake from who ever gave the info. 2. Colleen Robledo
    3. Hello, Please excuse the cross-posting.... I am looking for info on Flanagan (and the variant spellings) in the Belmont Count,OH area. My gr-grandfather Patrick Flanagan was born c. 1891 in Wheeling,WV and died 1928 in Buffalo, NY of tuberculosis. His wife Sarah died the next year, also of TB, and their children were raised in the German Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum in Buffalo, NY. Because the children were orphaned so young, we don't know almost nothing about Patrick and his family. We believe Patrick had a sister named Mary (who visited the sons at the orphanage in Buffalo). Patrick married Sarah Kennedy and they had several sons together: Harry (b. 1920 in Bellaire,OH), Patrick (b. 1925 in Bellaire,OH), and Michael (b. 1927 in Buffalo,NY). Michael was my grandfather. There were 2 older brothers who were raised at the orphanage as well: Joseph (b. 1916 in Bellaire,OH) and Leonard (b. 1917 in Bellaire,OH). However, my aunts think the 2 older boys were Sarah's sons from a previous marriage, and are not Flanagans. Sarah also had a daughter Catherine from this earlier marriage. All of the boys, except Michael, were baptized and made their First Holy Communions at St. John's in Bellaire,OH. I have a copy of Patrick's baptismal, which shows the surname spelled FLANNIGAN. If you know of Flanagans in any of these areas, please advise. Thank you for your help! Colleen Robledo Visit my family history site at: http://www.librarylinks.info/FamilyHistory.htm

    3. Hi to the list, If you have German ancestry you may want to read this message. I recently did some searching in the German Evangelical Protestant church, now called Smithfield United Church of Christ, in Pittsburgh, PA. The records of this church have been microfilmed. The microfilmed records started in 1832 and go into the 1970s. The early records are in German. I found some info on one of my German families that was in Pittsburgh and then went to Washington Co & later Monroe & eventually Noble Co. Perhaps you had German ancestors that lived for a while in Pittsburgh before moving into Ohio. I saw the names of Veiock (=Feiock), Lambertus, Stoffel, Lang, Jacke (= Yockey) and several others. I am willing to check those records for info on your German families that possibly were in Pittsburgh before coming to Monroe/Noble/Washington/Belmont. The records contain baptisms/births, marriages & deaths. I need to have some names & dates from you (and your patience). I will act as quickly as possible but it may take me a while if I get several requests. No charge of course, Shirley Harmon -------------------------------- [email protected] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~saharmon/

    1. [OHBELMON-L] cemetery poem & gravestone emblem -- ideas; Werts/Maple/Shrigley
    2. Hi Sandra, In looking at some old graves in Wisconsin, noticed where some had an actual photo on a shape embedded in the stone. I remember it well as someone had scratched the image and thought how sad. Do you suppose it could have been a photo mounted onto an emblem and inserted into the shape on the gravestone ? Another thought, might she was a member of a society of some sort, [e.g. DAR, Lutheran ladies group] and the image was of an emblem representing the society... or even a coat of arms? Since it came from thetime period near when your GG Grandma died, in 1859, my GG Grandmpa penned this popular poem in a fancy manuscript manner around an image of him and his wife: George Peter Werts [d. 1866, Ohio] & #1. Margaret C. Maple Werts [d.1851, Ohio] Come to think about it, the female image may well be his third wife, Mary Shrigley, b. abt 1818, d. ?, m. September 11, 1860 at Coshocton, OH. (photo/writings/design) Photo & poem" : First column: "This I do write it may be read When I am numbered with the dead And I've returned to dust again >From whence my feeble body came" Second column: " When I am dead and in my grave And my old bones are rotten When this you see, Remember me. Least I should be forgotten." Across bottom: " Made by Geo Werts February the 5th A.D. 1865 " as read/interpreted by Mary Beth Jensen 9/2000. George & Margaret are buried at: New Hope Lutheran Cemetary, Adamsville, Salem Twp., Muskingum Co., Ohio Just a couple of ideas to ponder. Happy Spring, Mary Beth in Wisconsin :-)

I first thought that maybe there was a connection to the GAR markers that are found dotted throughout the counties in Ohio for the soldiers that served in the Civil War and thought it might be connected someway to that but since it pre-dates the Civil War that couldn't be correct. I checked on several sites for markers and didn't come up with anything. I will enjoy seeing what suggestions you all come up with! It is now awaiting signature from Governor Wise to make it law. If you are a family genealogist/historian whose research involves West Virginia, then this bill affects your work whether you live in West Virginia or another state. If Governor Wise signs HB 4330, all birth records will be closed to public access for 100 years and all death records closed for 50 years. We are all concerned about privacy issues but HB 4330 in its current format is too restrictive. Please email Governor Wise and address your concerns. Don't delay.
