Hello, My ancestors are John F. Hobbs and Marion Shotwell, their daughter Sarah (Sadie) was my grandmother and went to Kansas when Sadie married my grandfather Josiah H. Brown, Sr. When I was in Monroe County in 2000 I did not realize that the Hobbs and Shotwells were from Belmont County Is there anyone from that area that is researching the same families. Thank you, Janice Brown O'Brien

Can anyone tell me if Northern Cemetery at Barnesville has any other name. I have an obit for Solomon J Hunt that says Northern Cemetery but the obit for his wife Lucy Hunt says what looks like Greenmount Cemetery. The obit is blurred , so don't know if is Green or Glen. Can anyone check burials for these people. Thanks Sue
Word has been received of the passing Of Edward Benajah Burcher of Melbourne, Florida on March 12, 2004. Edward Burcher was born December 14, 1921 in Somerton, Ohio and lived there with his family on the old Burcher Homestead prior to World War II. He was the son of Garfield Abram Burcher and Bessie Alta Casebeer Burcher. He was preceeded in death by three months by his sister Alice Burcher Conaway and is survived by his wife, Eleanor Elizabeth Windom Burcher (formerly from Barnesville, Ohio), his daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Frank Klemm, 4 grandsons, and his brother James Arthur Burcher of Barnesville, Ohio. The body was interred at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Florida, March 16, 2004. Numerous family and friends were in attendance.
I was hoping that someone on the list lived near the Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library and would do a lookup for me. I cannot get a copy of the book, "The early Pennsylvania Dials- their ancestors and descendents." by DeMoure, Violet Dial sent to me. I am trying to decipher whether this in fact could be a line of my family I have been searching for, but I do not want to make the trip to Ohio if it is not a lead. If someone would be so kind as to peruse through the book for me please contact me and I will give you a little more detail as to what I am looking for. The deceased was a noble woman and had filled her measure of life well and hers is a reward of the just. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert June 19, 2004 http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm Posted at this site with Nancee's permission I am not connected to this family, just wanted to share, hopefully it may help someone in their research. I do not know Mary's maiden name. Deborah
I am trying to determine when my grandmother, Josephine Hunkler, left the Ohio area. I know she married John Weber in Sept., 1911 in Denve, CO. She was born on the John Hunkler farm in Malaga Township of Monroe County, July, 1884 and baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Does anyone have access to Federal Census or City Directories that might help me pinpoint where she was between 1900 and 1910. She told me she once lived in a boarding house doing chores. I don't know whether that would be in Monroe county somewhere or Barnesville, Belmont County, where a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins lived. Thanks! Martha
First of all I'd suggest you visit the rootsweb site for Belmont County, always the first place one should start when beginning to research in a new area. All sites are different and have different info, but all contain things to help those starting to search in the area....generally they also have lookups offered, that may contain helpful info.... http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohbelmon/ If you know the death dates then I'd also suggest you check to see if there are any wills or administrative papers for these folks, at the probate section of the courthouse, in St. Clairsville.... both wills and adm. papers are wonderful sources of family data. Visit the online site for the Ohio Historical Society, located in Columbus. http://www.ohiohistory.org/ They have a lot of info online, and the indices of newspapers in different areas, including St Clairsville....you may, I believe, request these through interlibrary loans via your own local library.....with death dates you can pin down the films that might contain info on their deaths. They also have death registers, but you need to just surf the site to see what all they do have. Hi, Does anyone have a suggestion about any place to research info on Belmont County between 1800 - 1815? Since there are no census records for 1800 or 1810, and my ancestor, David Reed, died there in 1815, I have no idea where anything might be found regarding him-like where he was buried, etc. Was it common to bury a person on his land at that time? What burial sites (cemeteries) were in existence at that time, in that area,(close to St. Clairsville) about 1815? His mother, Elizabeth Reed, died in 1822, and same thing is true for her-no evidence of where she is buried. Only death records are very brief legal documents and nothing personal in them. Thoughts or suggestions? Doris Reed Forsyth
I have been searching for the parentage of William DILLON born in 1822 in OHio for many years without any luck. I keep coming back to the possibility that William may have been the son of James DILLON who is shown in the 1840 census for Monroe County, Perry Township with a male between the ages of 15-20. James was between the ages of 60-70 and born in MD in the 1850 OH Monroe County Census in Perry township. In the 1830 census for Belmont County Somerset township is shown a James DILLON family that has a male between the ages 5-10 which would also match the age of my William DILLON. The James DILLON is shown between the ages of 40-50 that fits in with the James Dillon in the 1840 and 1850 census for Monroe County. Is it possible that the James DILLON in Belmont County in 1830 census is the same James DILLON in Monroe County in 1840 and 50? Then in the 1820 census for Belmont County for Kirkwood township is shown a James DILLON between the ages of 26 and 45 that could be our same James Dillon. My question is: Could all these James DILLON's be the same man and could he also be the father of my William Dillon born in 1822 and shown in the 1850 census living in Monroe county, Green township with his wife Elizabeth (??) and their three sons: Abraham, Henry and John.? I wonder if anyone can shoot down my theory or help support it. Thanks for your help. Perry Adams
Seeking information on this couple. They were married Carroll Co. Had been given information that Anniasis/Anias/Amos had died in Civil War. I am descended through the Swangle/Swangel/Swengle lineage. Grateful for any clues. Viola
Anyone researching the HUTCHISON family? In 1840 census, there is a Benjamin at York Twp on page 036 and a Samuel at Mead Twp on page 033. My ggg-gm was Rachel S. HUTCHISON b/1838 in Ohio.m/Frederick EBERLING/EBELING of Germany in 1864. There are hints, no documentation, thus far, that her parents were Benjamin HUTCHISON and Nancy SMITH and that this couple was married at Portage Co., Ohio. Online, no documentation, I found a listing for two sisters, Elizabeth b/1833 m/Samuel FITCH and Anna b/1835 m/Mr.GREENLEE. any assistance appreciated Audrey
RICHARD M............. In my family search I saw messages on this list (from 2002) regarding a search for family of Stephen Hipkins, Sr. & Jr. including Brown and Heatherington from Belmont County, OHIO. My grandmother was Laura Hipkins Rand, daughter of Stephen Hipkins, Jr. I would like to connect with anyone who is a descendant of this line. I have little history of this side of my family and would very much like to learn more about them. Thank you. I revised my webpage today with some photos of my family. I also have spoken to an 84 yr old descendant of Jarrett's family who lives in Winfield, Ks.
