He married PHILIPPINA RAPPOLD January 03, 1839 in Oppau, Rheinland-Pfalz,Germany, daughter of ANTHONY RAPPOLD and MARY EISINGER. Notes for VALENTINE SMITH: Valentine's last name was spelled Schmidt when he was born in Germany. It was changed either by whoever registered him when he arrived in America or by himself, I do not know which. Valentine & Philippina arrived in New York aboard the Argo on July 26, 1843. They came from Oppau, Germany. The two families bought property in Carthage and Lodi Townships. The Rappold latter moved to Pomeroy. The Smith Residence on Dutch Ridge was passed to Mary Smith Montel; the to Mary's son, John Isadore Montle; then to John Isadore's son, Ralph Vinton Montle; then to Ralph's son, Robert Montle; then sold outside the family and those people reside there today. Valentine, in addition to farming, operated a small store with Phoebe from their house, and traded/sold produce also in Pomeroy. ****************************************************** Valentine Smith, son of Frederick and Elizabeth Smith, was born November 16, 1813, in Germany.
