Need help with early Athens County history. The first record that I can find for my ancestor is the 1820 census information which puts him in Amesville (Ames Twp) Athens County Ohio. Haven't found any record of him owning land there or record of any GOSNEL family living there pryor to him. 1820 census is the only record that he was even there. This census recording was accomplished by Sylvester or maybe Sylvanus AMES. He recorded the information on January 27, 1821 and filed it on March 21, 1821....which seems very strange since it was supposed to be an 1820 census...maybe this was common way back then??? The names that he recorded seem to all be in alphabetical order or atleast alphabetized by the first letter. Unlike most of the census information that I have seen, this one must not have been a house to house recording. I believe Sylvanus AMES was living in the area as early as 1800-1803. Any ideas what would have brought my gggg-gf Nicholas GOSNEL and wife Sarah McINTYRE to the very small township on Amesville in the year 1820 and where is the most likely place that they would have come from.?? How would they have traveled inorder to get there and what was going on history wise in that part of Ohio in 1820?? 1820 census says he was engaged in agriculture. But 1830 they are living in Spencer Twp... Guernsey County, Ohio and after that we don't know what happened to Nickolas. Appreciate any help or advise Larry Gosnell [email protected]
