Hugh Carrel HARRIS was born in Anthens County, Ohio, December 20, 1818, the son of Francis HARRIS and ?. The Harris family settled early in Delaware County, Indiana and there Hugh grew to manhood and engaged in farming. He moved to McLean County, Illinois in 1839 and married Nancy Walker HODGE April 7, 1840. They came to Polk County, Oregon in 1853 with five children: William Herron, Mariam, Charles Morton, Emmeline Hannah, and Elizabeth.
