    3. Does anyone out there know anything about DAVID BRUCE who was born about 1853 and lived in Nelsonville Ohio with his wife DELILAH SKIVER and their 10 children? The 1880 Census show him as a coal miner and that his father was from England. Their children were BLANCHE, FRED, CHARLES, WALTER, ROBERT (1883-1949), DAVID, FRANK, MELVIN ZELLA AND WILLIAM. He and Delilah were married Nov 12, 1872 in Nelsonville. Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Kathy Nelson - Tempe, AZ

Deed Indexes, Probate courts. Have you looked at the books that Athens County History and Museum? They are very active and have a lot of books for sale. I have just a few listed on my site and the link to their web site. This is my OHGenWeb site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohathens/ Put your queries and stuff and see if we can find something. 3. I though you Rooters might be interested in this info that was sent to me several months ago....possible someone on this list? It does need repeating from time to time. In the lower left-hand corner of most deeds, you will find signatures of two to four witnesses. The first one is (most always, but not written in stone) from the husband's side. The next one always from the wife's side. This is to protect her 1/3 dower right under the law. Nothing you will ever use will give greater clues to maiden names than witnesses to old deeds! Also in the 1800's and before, it was traditional when the daughter got married, as part of her dowry, the father either covered the loan or carried the note for his son-in-law. If you know the husband's name but not the wife's maiden name and you can find out to whom they were making their mortgage payments, about 70% of the time it was her father. Also a posting on "Relict" and "Consort": "The term "Relict" on a tombstone means that the woman was a widow at time of death, "consort" means that her husband survived her." I thought you all would like this interesting bit of info from MS LOISE T. OVERTON Joy Hyde Listowner OHATHENS-L [email protected]

    3. Thanks to everyone for the great response. Lots of ideas. I was hoping for the chance of a Margaret, since there seems to be a Margaret in all offspring. Letitia is another great idea, since I have the Uncle to Lottie marrying a Lettice/Letticia/Letitia from Wales. Again, thank you to everyone who responded. What a great group of people you all are.
