Hi All, I have an Athens Co. OH History film by Walker 1886 coming from FHC. Send me your Surnames and township if you know it and I will try to look them up. It is hard, since it is not indexed. The bio's are, but there are a lot of other names. I hope to go to Fort Wayne IN, Allen Co Library, this April & read the book (hope it is there!) . It is the second biggest genealogical library in the US. Microfilms take time and expensive to copy. Joy Hyde List Owner [email protected]

Hi, All. I am new to the list and would like to introduce myself and list my family surnames. I am Harriette Jensen and I live in San Jose, CA. The main surname I am researching right now is HOISINGTON. It is also spelled in a variety of ways (Hossington, Hassington,Hissington, Hasselton, Hazelton, Hossenton, etc.) in various documents. In Athens County, it was even spelled HYSELTON in the 1810 census. Thank goodness, my forebears had unusual first names (Barzava and Joab)! I would be interested in corresponding with anyone researching the following surnames, all of whom are related to the Hoisingtons in some way: BLACKWOOD DERRY FOUTCH GILLIGAN GILLILAN HOISINGTON (AND ALL VARIATIONS) HOOPER LINSCOTT LOGAN POTTER ROBINSON SPAULDING STEPHENSON researching: COMBS, DAVIS, HARDIN, HATFIELD, HOISINGTON, MILLS, MOORE, MORRIS, PERKINS, SPURGEON, BERGER (and JONES of Brown Co.OH) List host for HOISINGTON Mailing List and Co-host for the Logan Co. Hi All, I how have the USGS, US Geographic Survey on my web site. It is too long to give to you, but it is the first hyperlink on the first page of Athens Co OHGenWeb page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohathens/ I have know idea if it is all the cemeteries, after all the government did it. If you are real careful you can copy this address and change the oh and the Athen to another state like ks and Smith and get Smith County Kansas Cemeteries. It has worked on two states for me. But it is long and hard to copy. Joy Hyde [email protected]

Hi Richard, There some stories in the "History of Athens County, Ohio by Charles M. Walker 1869." Also "History of Hocking Valley" published in 1883." Wish I owned one of these, but I get them on loan from my local FHC. My apologies to Adell. You wrote yesterday saying that maybe Mathias Holdren Jr.never went to Iowa and the abbreviation IA, was Indiana. I wrote back saying that the info that I had from 1927, spelled out Iowa. Information that I have received in the last 24 hours from 2 different sources now leads me to believe that you are correct. My apologies and I have learned an important lesson. Just because someone wrote it down somewhere, doesn't mean that it's so. (This is my line of descent.); Joanna b abt 1822 Athens, married Charles GALEZIO 18 Sep 1838, Athens, Ohio. Does anyone out there connect? I know Daniel and his brother, Christopher are mentioned in several History books. They played a large part in the early building up of Athens County. I have the HERROLD line back to the early 1600's in Germany and am willing to share this data. I have done the work myself and know it is accurate as I searched through the old German Church Records via Microfilm. The Harper's are also mentioned in a few books. The immigrant was William Harper. He died 24 Dec 1830 in Athens County. His wife was Elizabeth. They had 7 known children. Their son Charles married Ann COOK parents unknown. They had 8 children, of whom one was Elizabeth. I am interested in all the children and their spouses. I am particularly drawn to the BARKER line. Two of William HARPER's daughters married BARKER brothers. Isabella HARPER married Michael BARKER, 1 Apr 1801, in Athens and her sister, Christinia married Isaac BARKER 10 Apr 1804 in Athens. Will share whatever I have with those researching these lines. Thanks! Linda DeFrees Franks Soda Springs, Idaho [email protected] [email protected]

The majority of Holdren information that I have is from the wife of one of Mathias's sons from Creston, Iowa in 1927. I'm fairly sure that they were in Iowa, at least according to her notes, William was born in Cumberland, Iowa (she spelled it out). I appreciate your response and I will keep that in mind while doing further research. Thank you, Tracee Adell Carr Smith wrote: > In the 1850s, Indiana's abbreviation was IA. I am searching for any information on Mathias HOLDREN b. abt 1817 Athens County, OH d. Delaware County, IN ?. and Louvina LEACH Holdren, no data. Mathias and Louvina were married March 22, 1838 in Athens County. - Does anyone have any information on the LEACH family in Athens Co.? I know nothing about her but her name. -Mathias and Louvina's son William Wallace Holdren (my great-grandfather) was born in Cumberland, IA in 1858. In the 1870 census of Delaware County, IN, Mathias and William are listed, but not Louvina. Why did they go to Iowa? Why did they come back? What happened to Louvina? Sorry I have so many questions but these are the family mysteries that I have that lead to Athens County. ANY information would be greatly appreciated.
