    3. AND NOW FOR MY MAIN RESEARCH PROJECT: Descendants of John Fleming Generation No. 1 1. JOHN1 FLEMING was born 1777, and died 1841. He married CHRISTINA SMITH. Notes for JOHN FLEMING: In 1819, he came to Ohio, having purchased an interest in the Ohio Land Company's grant. Being possessed of considerable means, he contributed liberally in the upbuilding of the country. Knowing of the scarcity of money in the west, he brought several hundred dollars in silver, mostly of the denomination of one dollar, which were carefully divided in half or quartered, as the case demanded, in making change. After remaining in Ohio six years, he returned to New York City, taking his family with him. John Fleming died there in 1841, and his wife, Christina (Smith) Fleming, died in Ames township in 1863. In the Amesville Census for 1820, John Fleming is shown to be over 45, Christina, his wife, is shown to be 26-45. They had four children, two boys under 10, two girls under 10. More About SAMUEL FLEMING: Fact 1: need to prove his relationship to Daniel 3. iv. DANIEL FLEMING, b. October 22, 1822, Bishopville, Ohio; d. 1912, Florida. Generation No. 2 2. JANE2 FLEMING (JOHN1). She married CHARLES WEED. Children of JANE FLEMING and CHARLES WEED are: i. CHARLES H.3 WEED. ii. WILLIAM M. WEED. 3. DANIEL2 FLEMING (JOHN1) was born October 22, 1822 in Bishopville, Ohio, and died 1912 in Florida. He married LUCY P. GARDNER May 16, 1846, daughter of THOMAS GARDNER and MARGARET SMITH. Notes for DANIEL FLEMING: Daniel Fleming was born in Athens county near Bishopville, October 22, 1822. He is the son of John and Christina Fleming. John Fleming was born in Germany in 1777, and came to the United States and settled in New York at the age of fifteen. Our subject attended the public and private schools of New York until about seventeen years of age, when he secured work on a sailing vessel plying between New York and New Orleans, making several trips between those points. Becoming acquainted with the engineers of the "New York and Harlem" Railway, then being built by George Law, one of the few millionaries of that day, he engaged as fireman on one of their crude, but at that time wonderful engines. He was afterwards sent to the "Mohawk and Hudson" Railway, which connected Schenectady and Albany. In this position, he was an engineer and ran the "John Bull," an engine which was built in England, and which was exhibited at the Columbian Exposition held at Chicago in 1893. He was also employed on the steam vessel, "Oregon," which, owing to her size and the fact that she was propelled by steam, was an object of much curiosity. In 1845, Mr. Fleming returned to Ohio and the scenes of his childhood, and purchased a farm of fifty acres; he was married May 16, 1846 to Lucy P. Gardner, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Smith) Gardner. Thirteen children were born to them, seven of which survive- Joseph, William, John, Theodore, Lincoln, Julia, and Edith. SOURCE: " The Centennial Atlas of Athens County, 1905, p. 128" **Athens Messenger has an article telling of the Fleming and McKinley families going to the Smithsonian to see the exhibit of the John Bull. I will insert newspaper article here. HISTORY OF THE JOHN BULL: It may look pretty modest, but the John Bull locomotive is the world's oldest still operable self-propelled vehicle. Much more than that, it is in the ancestral line of piston-driven wheeled vehicles that have been transforming our planet since the 19th century. Furthermore, since the John Bull was steam-powered, it was part of the steam revolution that thrust humankind into the industrial age. Meanwhile, the John Bull greets visitors to the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. SOURCE: Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. He married PHILIPPINA RAPPOLD January 03, 1839 in Oppau, Rheinland-Pfalz,Germany, daughter of ANTHONY RAPPOLD and MARY EISINGER. Notes for VALENTINE SMITH: Valentine's last name was spelled Schmidt when he was born in Germany. It was changed either by whoever registered him when he arrived in America or by himself, I do not know which. Valentine & Philippina arrived in New York aboard the Argo on July 26, 1843. They came from Oppau, Germany. The two families bought property in Carthage and Lodi Townships. The Rappold latter moved to Pomeroy. The Smith Residence on Dutch Ridge was passed to Mary Smith Montel; the to Mary's son, John Isadore Montle; then to John Isadore's son, Ralph Vinton Montle; then to Ralph's son, Robert Montle; then sold outside the family and those people reside there today. Valentine, in addition to farming, operated a small store with Phoebe from their house, and traded/sold produce also in Pomeroy. ****************************************************** Valentine Smith, son of Frederick and Elizabeth Smith, was born November 16, 1813, in Germany. He learned the weaver's trade in his native country and worked at it till 1843, when, wages being low, he determined to come to America. He landed in New York after a voyage of thirty-two days, and came to Athens County, settling in Lodi Township, where he now has a good farm of 150 acrews. He has a store of general merchandise, having a good stock of dry goods, boots, and shoes, etc., where he has a good trade. He was married in Germany to Miss Phoebe Rappold. 2. Sandra Quinn
    3. After six months of waiting for my husband's ancestors records, I got a letter saying that the records were in a local depository in Cleveland Ohio and to call a number there. When I did they told me the records were in a depository in Maryland. I called them and then six more months passed. I had given up hope when a package came in the mail. It held 200 zeroxed pages of the file. Turned out a handicapped child had received the father's civil war pension up until the 1950's. Because of that, the case had never formally been closed when the child died so the records had never been depostited in DC. Maybe something like that happened concerning the soldiers you are seeking info on. Maybe someone is still receiving the pension money and the records are not accessible. 2. Sandra Quinn
    3. Lori, thanks for the update and the compliment! Also, for anyone interested in a ACHS membership, you get a newsletter with that membership that has lots of good Athens county stuff, lots of surnames in articles from the past that they publish in it. (Lori, are you thinking of putting the first family surnames of people proven on the website?) I would think that would be a good thing, since people could check if their family name was represented and possibly order copies of files for a fee. That would be another way to raise money for the society. By the way, Lori, I believe is the president of the society currently. Thanks Lori for your good work too. Sandra Quinn~volunteer lookup person for Athens County on Ohio Gen Web, Member of First Families of Athens County, Ohio, Member of Athens County Genealogical Society, Member of Daughter's of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and an elementary teacher in the Cleveland area too!
