    1. dating a tombstone

    3. "DATE A TOMBSTONE" One way to figure out the era your ancestor was buried is to examine the material from which the tombstone is made. If your ancestor has a stone made of slate or common fieldstone (except wood used by pioneer) chances are the stone dates from 1796-1830. If the stone is flat topped hard marble, dates are about 1830-1849. If your mystery stone is round or pointed< soft marble with cursive inscriptions, look for a date of 1845-1868. Masonic four-sided stones began in 1850< and are still in use today. Pylons, columns and all exotic-style monuments are usually dated 1860-1900. Zinc monuments date from 1870-1900. Granite, now common, came into use about 1900.

    1. SWETT, LINSCOTT IN ATHENS CO. ABT 1800
    2. Lou Moses
    3. Census records, deeds show there were two Jonathan SWETT and a John SWETT and a Stephan SWETT in Athens Co between 1800 and thru 1810 and 1820. Mary SWETT md. Noah LINSCOTT 1793 in Cumberland Co Maine. Very likely one of the Jonathan SWETT guys is her fa. Mary and Noah LINSCOTT named a dau. Apphia and a son Jedediah. On page 33 of Everett Stackpoles book "SWETT GENEALOGY" is a Jonathan SWETT whose son Benjamin md. Apphia Rowe and a dau. who md. Jedediah Witham. "Apphia" was never a common name. Stackpole says very little about this line of SWETT. The father Jonathan SWETT b 1720 per Stackpole had son Jonathan b 1761 and a son John b. ? I apologize to all for the length of this query, but it takes a lot of careful explaining to get to the point where it can make sense. I am seeking any confirmation of any parts of my hypothesis. It does contradict a position laid out in Harold Linscott's book "THE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN LINSCOTT." Is it simply a coincidence that Mary (SWETT) LINSCOTT would name two of her five ch Apphia and Jedediah? If I am correct, Mary would be a sister in law to those two persons who md ch. of Jonathan SWETT b 1720. Thank all of you for being patient and any relevant discussion would be welcomed. 1. Athens Co. Divorces
    2. Andy Alexis
    3. Hi... I am interested in getting a divorce petition from Athens County, circa 1868. Do they have them that far back? I do know the year, I do not know the specific date; do I need that? My Athens Co. line are mostly Vernons, with a few Brooks and Dilles mixed in there for fun. My great-great grandfather, Elijah Vernon, for reasons unknown, decided not to come back from serving in the Civil War. His wife, Lydia Patterson, decided he was dead and remarried in Jan. 1868; THEN my greatgreatgrandpa shows up. There is a photo on my web site of Elijah at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/7825/vernon.html Andy Alexis, THE WEB SITE: http://www.calweb.com/~ndlxs [email protected] Sacramento, CA. 3. Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out On polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who care It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come to visit you. Author Unknown Cindy Ahle/Ehle, Fleming, Gardner, Fuller, Rappold, Montle/Mantel
