Hello Group, I was reading the Athens County newspapers abstracts- extracts and in the Athens Journal, 24 July 1890, p.8, col.1, it states: Melville DOUGLAS applied for a pension through H. H. Wickham. How would I go about finding the actual record of this pension? I believe this is my 3rd Great Grandfather, Melvin C. DOUGLAS ( born 21 March 1849 in Lodi Twp., Athens Co.,OH - died 15 Sept. 1913 in Athens Co.,OH) His wife was Lucretia H. RILEY (1852 OH - 1933 Athens Co.,OH) Thanks for any suggestions and help. ~Debby [email protected]

List members, For those of you who found the information helpful, here is a tip. The book is "Index to Athens County, Ohio Death Records 1867-1908" By Beveryl Schumacher and Rita Levering. This is only an index. The information I give you gives a volume number and page number. That is where the actual record is located. You can order it on Microfilm. There are three volumes I believe on one Microfilm and that is all this index covers. They are available at Probate court in Athens on microfilm, at Athens County Recorder Microfilm Dept. the Ohio University Library in Athens, the Ohio Historical Society in Colombus, and LDS Libraries. This is only an index. The original records on Microfilm MAY have other pertinent information, such as birth place, death place etc. I did this so I would not have to type it ten thousand times. I am thrilled to find out there are so many members on the list. I was beginning to believe I was the only one. One request from everyone. For all future requests use one surname per email. Send as many email as you like, just make them seperate. It's just easier for me. I already try to look up different variations in spellings and throw another name in the request, I would hate to forget it. Hope I am enlightening some people in breaking through some brick walls. Does any one have Cemetery inscriptions on Trimble Twp. by chance? Michelle
I have the Athens County Death Index for 1867-1908. I am willing to do lookups for anyone who is interested. Michelle

Hi Pam, 1856 a law was passed requiring the state to keep records of birth & deaths on the county level. But it was mandatory for the Probate Court to keep these records in 1867. 1850 Federal Census is real good. Have you checked in to the records LDS church has microfilmed at the Courthouse?. Taxes helped me a lot in Athens County. I'm looking for info on the RARDIN family from Clarks Chapel around 1870.
Descendants of John Fleming Generation No. 1 1. John1 Fleming was born 1777, and died 1841. He married Christina Smith. Notes for John Fleming: In 1819, he came to Ohio, having purchased an interest in the Ohio Land Company's grant. Being possessed of considerable means, he contributed liberally in the upbuilding of the country. Knowing of the scarcity of money in the west, he brought several hundred dollars in silver, mostly of the denomination of one dollar, which were carefully divided in half or quartered, as the case demanded, in making change. After remaining in Ohio six years, he returned to New York City, taking his family with him. John Fleming died there in 1841, and his wife, Christina (Smith) Fleming, died in Ames township in 1863. In the Amesville Census for 1820, John Fleming is shown to be over 45, Christina, his wife, is shown to be 26-45. They had four children, two boys under 10, two girls under 10. More About John Fleming: Fact 1: Buried in unknown cemetery, New York More About Christina Smith: Fact 1: Buried in Gardner Cemetery, Ames Township, Athens County, Ohio Children of John Fleming and Christina Smith are: + 2 i. Jane2 Fleming, born Abt. 1810. 3 ii. Martin Fleming, born 1813; died January 08, 1896. He married Christina Wagner December 13, 1857. More About Martin Fleming: Fact 1: need to prove his relationship to Daniel Fact 2: Date of Death from Athens County Death Records. 4 iii. Samuel Fleming, born 1814; died 1888. More About Samuel Fleming: Fact 1: need to prove his relationship to Daniel + 5 iv. Daniel Fleming, born October 22, 1822 in Bishopville, Ohio; died 1912 in Florida. Generation No. 2 2. Jane2 Fleming (John1) was born Abt. 1810. She married Charles Weed. Children of Jane Fleming and Charles Weed are: 6 i. Charles H.3 Weed. 7 ii. William M. Weed. 5. Daniel2 Fleming (John1) was born October 22, 1822 in Bishopville, Ohio, and died 1912 in Florida. He married Lucy P. Gardner May 16, 1846, daughter of Thomas Gardner and Margaret Smith. Notes for Daniel Fleming: ******************** Daniel Fleming was born in Athens county near Bishopville, October 22, 1822. He is the son of John and Christina Fleming. John Fleming was born in Germany in 1777, and came to the United States and settled in New York at the age of fifteen. Our subject attended the public and private schools of New York until about seventeen years of age, when he secured work on a sailing vessel plying between New York and New Orleans, making several trips between those points. Becoming acquainted with the engineers of the "New York and Harlem" Railway, then being built by George Law, one of the few millionaries of that day, he engaged as fireman on one of their crude, but at that time wonderful engines. He was afterwards sent to the "Mohawk and Hudson" Railway, which connected Schenectady and Albany. In this position, he was an engineer and ran the "John Bull," an engine which was built in England, and which was exhibited at the Columbian Exposition held at Chicago in 1893. He was also employed on the steam vessel, "Oregon," which, owing to her size and the fact that she was propelled by steam, was an object of much curiosity. In 1845, Mr. Fleming returned to Ohio and the scenes of his childhood, and purchased a farm of fifty acres; he was married May 16, 1846 to Lucy P. Gardner, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Smith) Gardner. Thirteen children were born to them, seven of which survive- Joseph, William, John, Theodore, Lincoln, Julia, and Edith. I already sent Rosemary the 1920-1929 and 1940-1949 obituaries on these names which pointed to the Millfield Mine Disaster, so if someone could research the more recent additions. There is currently no 1930-1939 or 1950-1969. I like you Bonnie already sent her phone lists and she did get in contact with some of her people. Rosemary, you can become a member of the Athens county genealogical society for ten dollars a year and you get 30 minutes of free research of a name. I am still searching for the parents of Benjamin F. Robison b. WV m. Charlotte Conant. Married March 8, 1846- Ames Twp. In the Athens County, Ohio Birth Recrods, 1867 - 1881 I found: William F. If anyone has any information on Durphy/Durfee/Robison/Robinson of Ames Twp, would you please pass it on to me. I sure would appreciate it. Hi , I have a 4th great grandmother named Jane Maria WAKEFIELD who was born somewhere in Ohio about the year 1826, since she was 24 and 34 years old in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Richmond, Indiana, which stated her birthplace as Ohio. I have a copy of her marriage record from Allen Co., Indiana, which only states the couple's names and the date of marriage--6 May 1844. Her husband, John Patterson REID was born in Richmond, Indiana, 28 Apr 1822. I would like to find out who her parents are and where in Ohio she was from. Do any of you have any clues?? I really appreciate any assistance you can give to me. Thank you, Jonni [email protected]
