I 1852 my great-great-grandfather Albert G. Gatton, who was probably full-blood Native American, married Amaline Devour, who was native. They were on the 1860 census records, with their children. They were both marked as non-white, as were their neighbors, the Sunderlands and Berrymans. I have a photo that shows how native their daughter Margaret looked. In the late 1900s I was told by the curator of the Allen County Museum there were no indians in the county after the Shawnee left their reservation in 1830s. You have to know how native people off the reservation were recorded on the census records. Usually it's with a checkmark, especially if it's in the race column, or with a script "L" for mulato.
