    3. Please read the copyright laws. All published, compilations of public records and all published materials, including newspapers are copyrighted for 120 years. I'm sorry that people misunderstood what Mark was saying & I hope that he does not take his website down because he has material on it that is not published and not readily available to many people. All genealogy societies and many private individuals do compilations of public records. This is for the convenience of those who cannot go to the cemeteries themselves or know where to get the records. Cemetery books are not just listings of the stones, but normally include the funeral home records, burial permits, information from stones that are illegible or missing. We do not claim anyone else's work. It is a lot of work for the compilers of such work to obtain the actual records and compile such books. Most societies or individuals who do such publications do not make a profit. All the price of the publication does is cover the cost of publishing it. No one forces anyone to buy such compilations. You can contact the Society and request lookups or track down all the records on your own, however, some cemeteries and funeral homes no longer exist and many people don't know how to find these records. Compilers of public records are doing a service to help. There is no greed involved. Also, take note, the Genealogy Society did not ask Mark to remove his cite, only not to directly copy material from our books or use the material without citing his source.
