The High Street Methodist Church building is still there. It's empty and has been for sale for a long time. It was originally the High Street United Brethren Church. As of 1912, my great grandparents James and Pearl CUSTER attended High St. U.B. Church. Does this church still exist? Shari in Ohio
Hi Dave, Thanks for your interest. I appreciate that. George Moyer was first in Licking County about 1804 and then Fairfield in Rush Creek Twp about 1820. He then moved to Shelby County while Margaret and a few of his other children went to Allen Co. I know that Margaret's brother Samuel, from which I am descended, was an early member at the Stemen church (Salem) in Allen County. You know, I thought he may have come from Rockingham but I can find no evidence of him there even though his family was closely associated with the Beerys of Fairfield Co. There are a few Moyer's in Rockingham at that time but none match up with the dates of George, his wife and family. Bob, I have a fair amount of Stemen data, much of it given to me by other researchers. While it is helpful to view -- a lot of it is not proven or very well documented. That goes for the little info I have on the Shellenberger surname. Hi, Dave, I was wondering if you have any knowledge of the SHELLENBARGER or SHELLENBERGER families that came from PA, to Fairfield Co., OH, into Allen County, OH and then traveled on, please? I have very little knowledge about the Shellenbarger's buried in Salem Cemetery in Allen County ( listed only as J.W. and A.M. Shellenbarger) or their parents listed as W.H. and J.E. Shellenbarger but, would like to know more and am specifically searching for info about the Abraham Shellenbarger family. His wife was Dorothy (Doyle) Shellenbarger but, he had another wife named Rachel for whom I have never found a marriage record but, he named her in his will. Some of their children included Abraham Jr., Delilah, Adam, Nicholas, Solomon and Aaron. Any new leads would be refreshing. Thanks and God Bless! LeRoy, have you ever been to the library at EMU? I've been doing searches of their catalog, and it appears that they have considerable reseach materials (mostly books) available. I could see myself spending time there if I was ever in that area. Dave, and Wendy.... Dave, you may already know this, but there is an Eastern Mennonite University there in Rockingham Co VA, either in or close by to Harrisonburg - Dayton perhaps?, and I believe I'd heard that they have a history collection there. See this web page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohallen/mennohist.htm Note that there was a marriage (above piece) between Christian and Margaret (Moyer) Stemen who were among those who were part of this migration. Many of these families including the Stemen and Moyer people were from Rockingham County, Virginia prior to their entry into Fairfield Cty, Ohio. Some of the Stemen people held prominent positions in the church. Not as sure about the Moyer's. I think as part of your research efforts you may want to concentrate on the Mennonite people, and in particular in Rockingham Cty, VA as that was a Mennonite settlement there as well. See if you may find your George Moyer there. Do you know where in Fairfield Cty he was located (Township)? If you tell me that I may be able to verify whether he lived near other Mennonite families in Fairfield Cty which would be another clue.
