    1. Re: [OHADAMS] Baker and Short families, 1840s on (LONG)
    2. Gray Matters
    3. Dear Wilma, I was delighted to hear from you! (Response delayed by Christmas labors.) Thanks very much for the obituary. There is definitely at least one connection between us, but it seems not directly through "my" Bakers--the Jesse Stockwell Baker I mentioned in my post (my gggrandmother's brother) married a Sarah Baker (no relation, as far as we know), who was the daughter of your Thomas Baker and Nancy (Glaze) Baker. Wish one could draw diagrams in e-mails! Your post presented me with a whole new idea. I had assumed that Jesse and family might have followed Jesse's sister Lucy Baker Short to Adams Co., but now I also see a very likely possibility that they went to Adams Co. in a group with Jesse's wife's relations. I know they went between 1850 (Hampshire Co. census) and 1860. I have just found William Short in the census index (Ancestry.com, free for the holiday season) for Adams Co. for 1840 and 1850--Winchester Twp--but not Jesse Baker (must go back and check Highland Co.). My information on both Jesse Baker and William and Lucy Short comes from other researchers, one of whom (Jesse Baker's descendant) seems to have dropped out of sight. I have pasted e-mails from these two researchers at the end of this post--perhaps you will be able to glean something from them. Note that in the Short info there is also a Glaze connection. These families seem to have been thoroughly intertwined, as I see two Short marriages in your obituary. I have only just begun investigating the Adams Co. connections, but have already done some research on Hampshire Co. (where my line of Bakers remained), and own a few books of Hampshire Co. resources. There are quite a few mentions of Conrad Glaze, Sr. and Jr., who I think must be an ancestor of yours--given all these Conrad Bakers. The Glaze family seems to have been well established in Hampshire Co. This is all coming out a little muddled. I will try to put my own Bakers into some sort of order: The furthest I know is: Peregrine Baker, b. 1779, d. 22 Sept 1847, m. Deborah Stockwell, b. 1781, d. 22 Aug. 1847. Peregrine is on the Hampshire Co. tax lists from 1802, and on the census from 1810-1840. They had at least these three children: 1. Nancy Baker (my g-g-grandmother), b. May 27, 1802, d. June 11, 1850. She married Charles WALL (I think they lived in Bedford Co., PA, but still working on that) June 30, 1830, had 3 sons very quickly. He died in 1834, and by 1840 (census) she was back in Hampshire Co. with her three boys. On Aug. 27, 1843, she married Jacob GRENZEBACK, my g-g-grandfather--their only surviving child was Benjamin Franklin Grenzeback, my g-grandfather. All these names and dates are in our old family bible record, but unfortunately without places. However, Nancy, two of her Wall sons who died young, and one Grenzeback daughter who died young are all buried in a little family graveyard near Springfield, Hampshire Co. 2. Lucy Baker. Married William Short July 31, 1827 (Hampshire Co. marriage bonds). William Short is on the Hampshire Co. census for 1830 only. The Short researcher quoted below is the one who told me they moved to Adams Co., where apparently they had various Short relatives. I think they had children, but don't know anything about them yet. 3. Jesse Stockwell Baker, b. June 26, 1817, d. Aug. 18, 1907 (Adams Co.), m. (March 6, 1841) Sarah Ann Baker (the Baker descendant, Anne Huber, says she was not related to Jesse, but I have not checked up on this), b. Sept. 3, 1808, d. Apr 22, 1896 (Adams Co.). They had the 4 children I mentioned, Thomas David, John William, Franklin Jesse, and Sarah Ellen. (See Anne Huber's e-mail below). Well, this is getting rather lengthy. Although Lucy and Jesse Baker are not my direct lines, I'm hoping I might find some descendants who can help me with Peregrine and Deborah's families (Anne Huber was able to give me Deborah Baker's maiden name, Stockwell, but otherwise she too knows little...). I hope some of this will be useful to you--I will also be happy to look up some things in my Hampshire Co. books, if you are interested! Best wishes and happy holidays, Martha Grenzeback graymatters@ibm.net **************************************************************************** **************************** Here are e-mails concerning Shorts and Bakers: >From Glenn Smith: "Somewhere in my boxes, I think I have a photocopy of the will and estate settlement of Isaac Short as outlined below: Wills: Short, Isaac - 1 Mar. 1823; pro. 20 Mar. 1826. wife-Martha, 3 children; John, William and Richard. Nathaniel Short was reportedly born on 14 Sept 1802 and died on 25 Nov. 1877 in Adams County, Ohio. He married Sarah Wallace, born 1802 and died 21 July 1867 in Adams Co., OH. I am looking for an old file that I have on some of their descendants. As I remember, it didn't contain much more info, but I haven't looked at it lately. Best regards, Glenn" **************************************************************************** ****************************** >From Anne Huber (she hasn't answered my last e-mails): "I have decided to provide you with the information I have regarding Perry Baker, his wife, and his children and not busy you with the remainder of my family tree below Jesse. Martha, >From here on down it gets too for removed from you ,Martha ,so I choose not to detail the rest that leads to my immediate family but I can give you more names and dates in my line if it is useful to you. Because Hampshire Co. was formed from Frederick and AugustaCo. Va. it's possible Perry came from the area of Winchester Va, just over the border. The family of Nancy Ann Glaze came from Winchester as her family was prominent in that area according to historical papers I have seen. etc. Anne Huber" At 07:56 AM 24-12-99 -0600, you wrote: >Martha, I also have Bakers from Adams and Highland Co.
