Martha, I also have Bakers from Adams and Highland Co. My grgrandfather Conrad Baker lived for a while at Mowreystown, Highland Co., which is near the Adams Co. line. He was a son of Conrad Baker Sr., supposedly a son of Thomas Baker and Nancy (Glaze) Baker. Conrad Baker jr., who lived at Mowreystown, had a sister in Adams Co., Mary E. Baker Barrick. An aunt (now deceased, years ago sent me an original of the Mowreystown paper's obituary. I've recently been scanning it, as the original is in pretty bad shape. Here it is: Enjoy! The following biographical information was excerpted from Mary Barrick's obituary, published in the Mowreystown Weekly Independent, Wednesday, November 21, 1906. The rest of the obituary contained praise of her godliness, and a photo. "Mrs. Mary E. Baker Barrick was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia, Jan 8th, 1828, and died at her home in Emerald, Adams County, Ohio, Nov. 2nd, 1906, aged 78 years, 9 months, 24 days. Her parents, Conrad G. Baker and Rebecca Vandegriff, married Jan. 15, 1824, died in 1857 and 1881 respectively. To them were born the following children: Nancy, wife of William Caldwell, deceased; Mary E., wife of John Barrick, deceased; Hannah, wife of Nathan Ingraw, deceased; Elizabeth, wife of Newton Lauth, living in Virginia; Margaret, living near Winchester; Conrad G. Baker, living near Winchester; Ivy, wife of John Short, living near Winchester; Sara A., widow of Robert Wallace, living near Winchester; Rebecca, wife of Jas. Adams, near Winchester. Jan. 14, 1849, the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Mr. John F. Barrick and with him moved to Ohio in 1858. To them were born seven children; Geo. E., living at Emerald; Alzena Va., wife of Rev. Sanford Burba, of Emerald; Clara O., wife of Geo. C. Short, near Emerald; Ellen M., wife of Jacob Stroop, near Emerald; Rebecca Ann, deceased; one dying in infancy. Mr. Barrick died in the army in 1862 and since that time the deceased has fought life's battles without the counsel and help of husband. Her death at that time bereaved one brother, five sisters, one son, 4 daughters, 5 grandchildren, and a large circle of friends holding her in the highest esteem." I don't know where Emerald is/was. One correction to the above info: Conrad G. Baker's middle name was Glaze, his mother's maiden name. His son Conrad's middle name was Washington, not "G.". Have a very happy holiday season! And of course, I've love to stay in touch with you! Wilma Faris Lorance wlorance@uswest.net
