They settled near West Union, Adams Co., Ohio, where he was raised and when a young man was married to Elizabeth Douglas. They settled in West Union where he followed the tanning business for a number of years. He sold his tannery and purchased a little farm near West Union. Selling this piece of land, he purchased a farm on Stout's Run, where he lived until he departed this life, April 1, 1880, being 91 years, 5 months and 5 days old. Father McGovney was well known throughout the county and had a great many warm friends. He had a warm hand and a warm heart and was the poor man's friend. Mr. McGovney joined the Methodist Church about 35 years ago, under the Rev. John Clark and lived in that church a number of years a devoted Christian. Circumstances caused him to remove his membership to the Christian Union Church. Sometime before he died, he gave me his name with his wife and his daughter's in the Methodist Protestant Church, where he lived until he died. Father McGovney has left 4 sons and 5 daughters and a kind and affectionate wife and many friends to mourn his loss, but their loss is his gain. I became acquainted with Father McGovney some 10 or 12 years ago and found him the same at all times. I have heard his name spoken of by many, but never heard his name called in question. His remains were laid away in very nice order in the grave yard at Liberty Church (Lynx, Adams Co., OH), being many in attendance, on the 4th day of April, 1880.
