Sylvia, Nathaniel Mitchell was a Private in an Ohio Company the War of 1812. His Captain was Jacob Young. (This is from "History of Knox Co., Ohio" by Evans.) I know this is not your Nathaniel, but it might be a grandfather, etc. There may be more about your ancestors in that book. An even earlier Nathaniel Mitchell (1728-1773) had a daughter named Hannah, who married John Young in Morris Co., NJ Nov. 30, 1768. This Nathaniel was married to Abigail Harris, and his parents were Jacob and Hannah Halstead Mitchell and grandparents were James and Mary Mitchell who came to America from Scotland about 1683. Hannah Mitchell had at least two sisters, Elizabeth and Abigail, and two brothers, Jacob and William. Abigail, Jacob, and William moved to Frederickstown, Ohio. William Mitchell died August 12, 1848, at age 83 and is buried at Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He married Phebe Southard, who died in 1861. William and Phebe Mitchell had children including Naomi, Mary, Silas (1814-1899), and Rev. John Mitchell (1806-1863). This family lived near Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio, and some are buried in the Mound View Cemetery there. If you can connect to this family, there is more in the "OUR YOUNG FAMILY IN AMERICA" book. There is a William Mitchell, Jr. mentioned, born July 15, 1811 in Knox Co., OH, and md. Lucy Brown, May 23, 1833.. They had a son named Rollin, b. April 7, 1847. These Mitchell families lived in Knox County, not Adams County. However, I understand that parts of Knox Co. used to be part of Adams County. And some of their cousins, etc. moved at about the same time to Adams County. If you can give me the names of any others in your MITCHELL family who lived in Ohio, even later generations, I might be able to find them. Or give me other related Ohio surnames.
