I also read that he built a house there for his wife and children. This has confused me also because I know that others list Gen Bradford as being part of their family tree and listing that he moved to Adams County. I do not know how to reconcile this with what I have found in my research. The article I referred to in my previous message states the following: "The Bradford family is of Irish origin, but we can learn little of the history of their ancestry. As far back as we can gather anything authentic, it is that two brothers, David and William, who came from Pennsylvania or Virginia, settled in Adams County. David came at a very early date and settled at the mouth of Brush Creek, on the Ohio River. He became a very prominent man in the county, serving as County Treasurer from 1801 to 1831, a period of thirty years. When the county seate was removed, he was among the first to locate in the new town of West Union, coming here in 1801, as soon as the town was laid out. He built the first hotel in the place and opened a tavern in 1806. William Bradford, the other brother, was the grandfather of David M. Bradford, the subject of this sketch. It appears that the father of William died when the son was but a child, and the little fellow was placed in a! family of strangers, somewhere in Virginia, with whom he lived until he grew to the years of manhood. In 1819 he left Virginia, came to Adams County and settled in West Union where he stayed for a year, then moved to Sprigg Township and settled in Fox's survey, No. 401, on the Ohio River where he lived and died." The article goes on to name all of William's children, who they married and dates of marriages, grandchildren, etc. etc. Now, just so you can be as confused as I am, there is a folder at the Adams County Historical Society all about Bradfords. I copied several pages to bring home with me (I live in SC). The society is only open 4 hours on Thursday afternoon and I think 4 hours on Saturday. I could have stayed a week and not gotten everything that is available. There is an article about Samuel Robert Bradford's family and it is the same ones that you refer to. The article was copied from an article in the Washington PA library and says that Samuel was born in Ireland and married Sarah Bradford (no relation). They emigrated to America about the middle of the seventeenth century and settled in Cecil Co. MD :"near the head of the Elk" (now Elkton) - removed to Westmoreland Co. PA, now Fayette Co, year not known. Both Samuel Robert and Sarah are buried at Bradford, PA or as it is now called - Broadford, Fayette Co. PA. Their children: 1. William (m Margaret Parkinson of Washington, PA) b. 8 Jan 1770 d. 9 Oct ? near Maysville, KY (Maysville is almost directly across the river from where the Bradford farm was located. 2.Rebecca Bradford (m William Miller b 1730, d 1814). b. 1759 m 1778 d. 18 Mar 1835 resided near Connellsville, Fayette Co. PA buried Broadford, PA Their children: William, James, Samuel, Abraham, Jess, Stephen, Rebecca, David. 3. David Bradford (m Barbara Grimes) b d Resided in West Union, Adams Co. OH David and Barbara's children were Samuel and David. I have two other articles with different versions of the David Bradford history. Let me send those to you next time. They are lengthy. They may be good enough copy to scan but the print is poor quality so I am not sure.
