Does/would SKS with access to the 1850 census look and see if the family of Leonard and Jane BROOKS were residing in Adams County?? Leonard and Jane would/should have been born about 1812 and their 7 children born between 1841 and 1849... I think. Thanx, Gene Hutson Norfolk, Nebraska Genealogy; "a stirring of the memories"

There is a listing for this family in the 1860 Census for Oliver Twp., which gives her origin as VA http://www.census-online.com/links The 1850 Census was taken after the marriage, so she is not in her parents family. Here again she is from VA. In fact there are a number of WALLACE listings in Adams Co. with origins from VA. Find out if a library in your area subscribes to an online provider of census data with 1850 and 1840 listings. You will need to put together some family group sheets on these WALLACE families to see if you can find her origins. Good Luck, Vera

I am looking for an ancestor of mine, her name is Sarah Wallace Swearingen. I would specifically like to find out the names and personal information of her parents. The records I have for her state that she was born August 3 or 5, 1832 (the 1880 census says she was born in Ohio but I also have reports of her being born in Virginia/West Virginia) and died on December 8, 1885 in Winchester, Adams County, Ohio. She was married around June 20, 1850 supposedly in Adams County as well. Using information from Karel Whyte's website (I only recently learned of her death - what a terrible loss) and the 1880 census I've been able to ascertain that her husband was George Washington Swearingen, born July 18, 1818 to Thomas Swearingen and Rebecca Gillespie, married to Hannah C. Smith and to Sarah Jane Wallace and died May 8, 1903, According to one source, it appears that George's sister Rebecca (or Rebeckha) Swearingen married Sarah's brother George William ! Wallace (b. December 11, 1819 in Adams County (probably Oliver Township), Ohio; m. October 16, 1845 in Adams County; d. February 26, 1866 in Adams County, Ohio buried in Unity Cemetary). If anyone has any information on these people or just on Swearingens and Wallaces in Adams County in general, I'd appreciate any information you're willing to share. Please feel free to email me. Thanks!

Also, with Adams County, as was the case with many counties, there was a courthouse fire which complicates things. However, in Adams County, the genelogical society has done an EXCELLENT job of scavanging marriage records from every source imaginable - newspapers, church records, remains of the courthouse records, etc. That said, "Marriage Records of Adams County, Ohio 1797-1894 Vol. I" on page 53 shows John Campbell married Bitha Smith on 1 March 1825 - performed by William Baldridge. Source is cited as Marriage Book #3 from the Probate Office - which were apparently transcribed from earlier books sometime around 1894. I wouldn't worry to much about the spelling being slightly off here - given what the record would have gone through to reach this point the chance of some slight mispellings is pretty high.
