Hi Gene, Are you saying that there may be 2 John Brooks born in 1830 ? Does your John Brooks 1830 have any connection to Semanthy Piatt, Adams Co., Ohio or Modoc Co., California? I find a JOhn Brooks in the 1880 Adams Co., census ,Tiffin Twp age 50, born Ohio (parents born Ohio) ,wife Mary 29,dau Sarah J 23( could not be dau of Mary because of age), son Lewis Clinton, 17, dau Mary Etta 9, son Alfred Monroe,6 and son Wm.1. In the 1880 Modoc Co, Ca census there is John Brooks 50 ,b Oh,NyNy, married to Semanthy Piatt 46, b Oh Va Va. The Piatts lived next door to John Brooks in the 1850 census when John was 20 and Semanthy was 15. Her parents were born in Va on this census & she says so in later census. Just received word I have to fly to Ohio for family illness(I live in Ca.), I will keep your e-mail, answer this one for me & I can mail you from back there. Sharon Karns skarns3@coxnet

ABRAHAM GROOMS & wife MARGARET"PEGGY" and RICHARD GROOMS & wife ELIZABETH both leased land from Geo. Wm. Fairfax, 1786, part of Shannondale, in Norborne parish. Both men to Adams Co, Ohio very early, (family tradition says in 1790's) This was in Berkeley Co Va deed Bk 8 Shirley http://community.webtv.net/cgarreth/ABRAHAMGROOMSA
I read with interest the Grooms-Satterfield post re Shannondale tract of Lord Fairfax's land on the Shenadoah.Using only Cecil O'Dell's book on the pioneers of old Frederick Co,Va,which indexes a Wm Satterfield about 1740,but no Shannondale nor Grooms,I made an educated guess roughly where Shannondale tract was. From Frederick Co,Va was split off in the [?] 1770 era,Berkley Co,Va,and Berkley Co split into 3,including Jeferson Co,Va at the mouth of the Shenadoah river into the Potomac River,at Harper's Ferry,Va. Then,in 1863,Va split because of the civil war, and Jefferson Co is now in WV. Honor Grimes wed 1st a Crawford, and had Col Wm and Valentine Crawford. Then she wed Richard Stephenson, and raised her sons in what is now Jefferson Co,WV. Several of her sons,in the 1765 era, moved near modern Connellsville, now,Fayette Co,sw Pa. Col Wm Crawford was tortured to death in mid-1782,and his militia army defeated in mid-Ohio by the Indians. You can see his son,Lt John Crawford, and Noble Grimes, and a Richard Graham, plus the Stevensons, together near Connellsville-New Haven,Pa until about 1790. Some Richard Grayham had a fort,on the Concord,Ky bank of the Ohio oppisite the mouth of Adams Co's Ohio Brush Creek, before Nathanial Massie pioneered Manchester,Adams Co,Ohio nearby in 1793 [?]
Sharon, Need your help BIG time, I'm looking for John Brooks, b. 1785 Connecticut, was supposed to be in Ohio for 1812 when Leonard (2nd child) was born. His 10th child was also named John, b. 1830 in Adams Co, Ohio. Need to see who he was with in 1820, 1830 and 1840. John Jr is my 3x Great Grandfather. There seems to be some confusion as to which family John Sr. belongs to. I have to start somewhere, might as well try Ohio, I also need to try Connecticut and New York. My Adams Co ancester, Daniel Matheny, was there before Statehood in 1803. This is why I read posts even when the name has nothing to do with the ones I am researching, you never know when those names will show up connected to your own. I am descended from the Grooms and Freelands but the Shanks and Satterfields are collateral lines to the Grooms. This gives me another place to start looking. Sandy

I have in my file sketchy information about a McKee family that traveled along with them from Hardin/Meade co KY, through southern INdiana to Illinois after the War of 1812. These McKees are said to be the descendants of James McKee b. c. 1750 Allegheny Co PA, said to be the son of Hugh McKee and Mary Nesbit. The Mathenys Shanks Grooms Satterfields, et. al, by the time of the Revolution were living on a 30,000 acre patch of Fairfax land called Shannondale, lying along the east side of the Senandoah river. My Adams Co ancester, Daniel Matheny, was there before Statehood in 1803. In Hardin Co in 1801, Michael Matheny, at least 40, married Mary McKee Long, at least 30, widow of John Long. They both may have had earlier families. Mary's presumed brother William was also a part of this group moving on to Illinois. MIchael's, brother Isaiah was married to Rachel YOUNGER (not Young), daughter of Henry Younger and Rachel unk., and their son Joshua's first wife, married in Hardin Co., 1808, was Agnes "Nancy" McKee, younger sister of Mary McKee Long. Other families intermarried with along the way were Cooper, Fraikes, and Tullis. Some of this kin group were with the first wagon train to Oregon out of Platt Co MO in 1843. I love all these old pioneers, and wish I knew more about them. I send this on to alert McKee researchers to trhe possibility of more connections and relationships among these families.
