I am researching Mary Bird, who married Stephen Ruddell. Her sister was Elizabeth Bird, who married John Jones. John and Elizabeth (Bird) Jones had a son, Andrew Bird Jones that is burried on the border of Adams/Pike County, Ohio near Piketon. This near where my John Peters and Rachel Pownall are buried. Here is some interesting info on Simon Girty: Simon Girty’s Incidents with & Atrocities of Allied Families ~ 1750 Richard Peters Removal of Squatters~ Secretary Richard Peters of Pennsylvania removed many squatters from the Juanita Valley of the Susquehanna, including Andrew Lyken and Simon Girty (this the father of the subject of this article). This is the same location where we speculate James Peters and Mary Bird lived when James Peters drowned in the Susquehanna River in 1750/2 timeframe. See Dauphin County Genealogy Resource Center’s webpage at: _http://maley.net/dauphin/OnlineData/geographic/lykens.htm_ (http://maley.net/dauphin/OnlineData/geographic/lykens.htm) ~ 1780 Massacre at Fort Ruddle, KY~ British officer, Captain Henry Bird, of the Eighth Regiment of his Majesty's forces, led the destruction of Ruddle's and Martin's Forts. This Fort Ruddle, Kentucky was built by Isaac Ruddle and is not to be confused with Fort Ruddell, Lost River, West Virginia, built by Isaac’s brother Stephen Ruddell (wife: Mary Bird). “The whole Indian force under the influence of the British were collected with Simon Girty and McKee.” See “Destruction Of Ruddle's And Martin’s Forts In The Revolutionary War By Maude Ward Lafferty” at: _http://www.shawhan.com/Ruddles_Fort.html_ (http://www.shawhan.com/Ruddles_Fort.html) ~ 1782 Col. William Crawford tortured at stake~ William Crawford was tortured, scalped, and killed by Native Ammeicans in a notorious incident near the end of the American Revolution. Simon Girty was present at the torture. William Crawford may be a sister to Nancy Crawford, whom married James Boone Tallman (See Tallman Newsletters). Remember their daughter, Rebecca Tallman married Reuben Slavens. See Tallman Newsletters at: _http://www.picosearch.com/cgi-bin/ts.pl_ (http://www.picosearch.com/cgi-bin/ts.pl) See: Wikipedia at: _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Crawford_(soldier_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Crawford_(soldier) ) ~ 1792 Slaying of two Morris Girls by Indians~ The Morris Massacre Henry Morris was the first settler on Peter’s Creek, which is now in Nicholas County. In the fall of 1791, a man came to his house and introduced himself as Mr. Allen and asked if he could stay with him all winter and hunt. There was a lot of bear, deer, elk, buffalo and small game in the area at that time. Mr. Allen said he had been with the Indians and had learned to hunter from them. Mr. Allen moved in with Henry and his family and they hunted together that winter and killed a lot of game. Henry had a good bear dog at that time which he called Watch. Together they had caught several bears that winter. Henry had his dog with him when he was scouting for Indians, while in the Kanawha Valley, and the dog had learned to distinguish the scent of an Indian from any other scent. When he smelled the scent of an Indian, Watch would run around Henry, with his hair raised as if he were afraid. During the last of March or first part of April 1792, Henry Morris traveled to the Kanawha Valley on business. While he was there he stopped to visit friends and relatives. He was talking with a group of friends and telling them about the man who had stayed with him and his family all winter. He told them Mr. Allen had learned to hunt from the Indians and was a very good hunter. A man who was listening asked Henry what Mr. Allen looked like and Henry described him. The man then said the description matched Simon Girty, who had murdered numerous women and children. He told Henry that he had been acquainted with Girty before he deserted the white people. Henry didn’t believe it. The man then continued to describe Simon Girty. Henry said he couldn’t have described Mr. Allen any better if he had been looking at him. He said Girty had a scar on his head at his hairline. He told Henry which side of his head the scar was on and advised him to look when he got home. It was late that evening when Henry got home. When he saw Mr. Allen, he knew he was in fact Simon Girty. When confronted he denied it. Henry then pushed the man’s hair up and there was the scar as the man had described it. Henry told him he was going to kill him. Girty still denied his identity and began to plead for his life promising he would leave in the morning. Henry was still determined to kill him but Henry’s wife, Mary, asked him not to kill him because he might not be Girty and he had promised to leave the next morning. Henry relented but sat guard all night with his gun on his lap. The next morning Girty left. When leaving, Girty tried to take the Morris’s dog, Watch, with him. Two of Henry’s daughters, Margaret "Peggy", 14 and Betsy, 12, called the dog back. Girty got angry, cursed the girls and said he’ d get even with them. About two or three weeks after the incident with Girty, Henry was returning home one evening, and at the head of Line Creek, which adjoined Peter’s Creek, Watch began to growl and circle around Henry, behaving as he did when Indians were close. Henry continued home without seeing the Indians, but by the actions of the dog he knew they followed him closely. They were afraid to attack Henry for he was very good with a gun and he could load his rifle as he ran. When Henry got to his house, John Young was there. He asked his wife where the girls were. Mary said she had sent them to the other side of the farm to get the calves. Henry told her Indians had followed him home. Henry asked John if his gun was loaded and he said it was. Henry said he would reload his gun and they would go after the girls. As he stepped into the yard he heard the girls scream. He ran in the direction of the scream and yelled for John to follow. Henry beat John to the first girl, Peggy. She had outrun the Indian for fifty or sixty rods and would have gotten away, but she tripped. She had been tomahawked, scalped and her back was broken but she was alive and able to talk. Henry asked her who did this to her and she said a red man and the man that stayed at their house last winter killed Betsy. Henry asked her which way the Indian went. She told him and he started after the Indian but Peggy begged him not to leave her. When she finally agreed to let him go after the Indian he ran the way Peggy said the Indian had gone and finally saw him. He was setting sight on him and was about to pull the trigger when the Indian jumped over the bank of the creek behind some laurel. If he had been a few seconds earlier he would have gotten him. He went back to where Peggy was and he and John Young looked and found Betsy. She was dead, murdered by Girty. She was scalped and stabbed four times with a large butcher knife. The knife had gone entirely through her body three times making seven places. Henry and John carried the two girls to the house. Peggy died before morning. The next day the neighbors gathered and buried the two girls in the same grave. The coffin was made of puncheons, a heavy, broad piece of roughly dressed timber with one side hewed flat. One was laid in the grave and the bodies of the two girls were placed side by side on it. Smaller pieces were cut and placed at each end and another puncheon placed over them. The day after the girls were buried, Henry, his family and the other settlers went back to the Kanawha Valley. This was the second or third time Henry had to leave Peter’s Creek because of the Indians. See Morris Massacre at: _http://www.wvdar.org/WilliamMorris/Morris%20Massacre.htm_ (http://www.wvdar.org/WilliamMorris/Morris%20Massacre.htm) John’s Note: Henry Morris married Mary Bird (daughter of John Bird and Margaret Dean). This John Bird is said to be son of Thomas Bird and Catherine Covert. One of Henry Morris’s daughter’s marired William Bird of Bath county, VA (son of John Bird and Margaret Wintrow). John Bird lived in Monterey, Highland County, VA (Slavens lived here also). John Bird is son of Andrew Bird and Magdelene Bird and is also brother to our Mary Bird that married James Peters. Andrew and Magdelene Bird are also the parents of Elizabeth Bird (wife of John Jones).

Hopefully you have found your helplong before this. I have found that the Township Trustees are usually who oversees cemeteries in the counties. Often they open graves, and find the cemetery lots for you etc...(at least they did for us.) I don't know if this will help you or not, but if you haven't gotten a satisfactory answer to your problem, you might try the Green Twp Trustee at phone # 937-549-1389, address: 21092 US 52, Stout, Ohio 45684. p.s. I went to school with Paul Furnier at Buena Vista School in 1944-45 (Scioto Co. just on the Adams Co. line). Paul had an older sister. (I don't remember her name). Our house front overlooked their house back half a block away. I think I saw some Furnier names at McKendree Cemetery in Scioto Co, (US 52) when we have been up there. If you haven't checked there you might want too. Roger Bowling was Nile Twp Trustee for many cemeteries in a huge surrounding area, even into Kentucky when last we talked to him. I need to reread it to make sure I have a clear picture. I just finished transcribing the 1831 settlement of Curtiss Cannon which I received after due process from a very, very nice lady at the Adams County Genealogical Society of Adams County. As soon as I put the finishing touches on it I will forward it to you. In it U.W. Cannon, B.N. Cannon J.A. B. Cannon and E.C. Cannon amongst others of the region are found purchasing items from Curtiss' estate. Also present is Rebecca Cannon. Quite a unique situation I believe. As you know this Curtiss is from MD and his wife was born in Massachusetts. I would love to know more about them. Interesting situation.According to some Dorchester County, MD land records Curtis was selling land as late as 1804. By 1807 he was performing marriages in Adams County. Research in Maryland on the Internet is challenging at best. I reallly would like to see if there is a connection between a Newton Cannon (b. Aug 1761) and Curtiss, Tubmon and Zadoc Cannon. If I could find the parents and/or siblings I think it would help greatly.

Please contact me if you recognize anybody, have some info, etc. Here is some other information I received from an elderly lady near Indianapolis. She sent this to me in a letter, so it’s a bit confusing. Her husband, Benson Corwin Zile, was a nephew of my great-grandfather, Montier Cannon. She sent me a diagram/notes written by somebody else in the family. This diagram was “sent to Verda McNulty by Evalina via Caryl & Aunt Ruth Eylar.” We do not know the exact name of the person who created the diagram – only that he/she must have been the child of Hettie Eylar, granddaughter of Jerry Cannon. The diagram is confusing. It took me awhile, but I was able to suss it out finally. I’ve written my findings below. I’ve also included information from the diagram/notes that did not easily fit into outline format. This information appears in bold red type. (If you can’t see color, then it’s simply the information that is in bold typeface.) I have added some of my own Information for the sake of clarity; my information appears in italics. My greatest concern, given all of the following information, is how Handy Cannon fits into these five Cannon brothers. If he was born in 1793, the next child would be Tobias, born in 1800 – that’s a mighty big spread for the time. And away we go…. There were five Cannon brothers (“from Staunton, VA”): 1. Tobias 2. Urban W. 3. Levin 4. Jerry [A.B. Jeremiah Cannon, I’m sure] 5. Edward Here is what I “know” about Tobias N. Cannon: b. 1800 in MD d. sometime after 1848 in Ohio (I assume it was Ohio) m. 2-21-1822 in Adams County, OH Spouse: Julia Ann Horn (1805 - 1891) Children: William (1823 - 1825) Caroline R. (1825 - 1905) m. Lewis Zile (1821-1865) on 3-30-1848, Adams County, OH James Quincy (1828 - 1901) m. Ann Holmes (1821-1896) on 10-13-1853 in Bellview, OH Benny J. Cannon (1829 - ) [can’t find this son on any census] Curtis W. (1830 - 1856) Elizabeth M. (1833 - ?) m. Nyran ? Randolph N. (1835 – 1903) Cyrus R. or H. (1840 - 1872) Wellington Corwin (1843 - 1953) m. Mary Amanda Reese (1849-1892) Narcissus V. (1845 - 1861) Montier B. (1846 - 1928) [my great-grandfather]m. Icie V. Elgin (1843 – 1907) Victoria D. ((1848 -?) Uracha V. (about 1850 - ?) m. Lovett I. Tobias had several children, but the author only mentions his son, Wellington [Corwin] Cannon and Wellington’s daughter, Carryl Victoria Cannon (later married to Harry Parker). (Benson Corwin Zile – see opening paragraph above – received his middle name from Wellington, according to Benson’s wife, Anna.) II. Urban W. Cannon (1801 - 1845) a. He is buried in Locust Grove, Franklin Township, Ohio. b. Married at one time to “Aunt Cas” (nickname of Jennie Roberts, sister – possibly twin – of Martha Roberts). c. He had no children with “Aunt Cas.” d. “Aunt Cas” outlived him and later married his brother, Levin. e. Cannon Cemetery lists Urban as having a wife named Elizabeth who died at the age of 81. f. According to the Adams County history below, Urban was an innkeeper. The 1850 census shows an Elizabeth Cannon as being an innkeeper. She also has a daughter named Martha, aged 16. Since Urban died five years prior, this would fit. III. Levin Cannon a. Was married at least once before he married “Aunt Cas.” b. Was the fourth husband of “Aunt Cas” but had no children with her. c. Again, “Aunt Cas” outlived her husband. d. No mention of any children or grandchildren, but one great-granddaughter, Flo Wickerham Giffin, is named. IV. Jerry Cannon married Martha Roberts (sister – possible twin – of Jennie Roberts, AKA: “Aunt Cas”) on 10-13-1825 (Adams County Marriage records) and they had five daughters: 1. Martha (also referred to as “Grandmother Eylar”) m. David Shoyer Eylar and had the following children: a. Jennie b. Allie c. Hettie (referred to by the diagram’s author as “my mother”) d. Lizzie e. Oscar f. Ella g. Ruth (this would be the “Aunt Ruth” referred to below) h. Verda i. John NOTE: Jennie (“Aunt Cas”)and Martha (“Grandma Eylar”) Roberts were children (possibly twins) of [Unknown] Roberts and wife, Martha. 2. Thermirthia (“Aunt Mirth”) m. Dr. Harvey Clark and had a son, Dr. Frank Clark 3. Elizabeth 4. Evalina 5. Rebecca Of the three remaining daughters [Elizabeth, Evalina, and Rebecca], “one of them married a Kelly and her daughter married William Reed, who was cousin Cora - mother Kansas where Aunt Ruth visited her for a long time” Note: Adams County marriage records show that Elizabeth R. Cannon married Elisha Kelly on Sept 1, 1849. V. Edward Cannon Nothing is written about Edward. Here are quotes taken from the diagram/notes: “Aunt Cas was actually named Jennie (my aunt Jennie Copeland was named for her) and raised Grandmother and her sisters (5 girls) – Lived with Grandma and Grandpa Eylar. Was married four times. 1st husband - Urban Cannon, 4th husband Levin Cannon. 4 times a widow. They were from Staunton, VA. Aunt Jennie never had any children of her own, but was said to have raised 25, one of them a colored girl whom they called ‘Black Ann’ (last husband). Aunt Jennie’s 2nd and 3rd husbands were John Taylor and a Mr. Logan. Levin Canon was great-grandfather of Flo Wickerham Giffin - + their children – he was previously married (before Aunt). Cousin Jennie Young was Aunt Cassie’s daughter. “A cousin to the Cannon’s lives in Cherry Fork, OH. Her name: Mrs. Nellie Kepperling. Her mother was a half-sister to Grandma Eyler.” Grandmother’s [Grandmother Eylar, I assume] father – Urban – must have married her mother [Martha] after his wife Martha’s death. [This is the only troublesome statement on the page because it doesn’t go with all of the other notes and diagram; it contradicts them, in fact. Unless, of course, there is information that has been left out. Which may have been the case when you consider the note about Grandma Eyler’s having a half-sister.] “Montier Cannon [and his siblings] are first cousins to Grandma Eylar.” “Grandma Eylar’s mother was named Martha.” “Am pretty sure that Aunt was a twin sister of Grandmother Eylar’s mother (Martha). I definitely remember a twin relationship on direct line.” Here is some nice information I came across at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/newspapers/tidbits/tbs48a.txt Franklin Township Franklin Township was organized Feb 25, 1828 from territory taken from Meigs Township, and at the time of its organization included what is now Bratton Township. It takes its name from America's wisest patriot Benjamin Franklin. Early settlers were Peter Platter, Peter Wickerham, James Horn, James Boyd, Aaron Freeman, Robert Earl, William Pemberton, William Ogle, George Heller, Jesse Wethengton, John Evans, and John Chapman. Platter and Wickerham came in 1797/98 and the following year Wickerham opened a tavern at what was know as Palestine, then on the line of Zane's Trace. Afterwards, James Horn, who lived a mile north of Wickerham's on the Trace, opened a tavern where a public house was kept for many years. Wickerham built the first brick house in the region. Locust Grove is the first village in the Township. Curtis Cannon in 1805 kept a tavern on the site of the of the residence of John Kendall. He also carried on a tannery, the first in the region. In 1830, his son, Urban W. Cannon built a hotel and planted a grove of Locusts opposite the hotel, where he had a flourishing trade in the days of the old stage coach line from Maysville to Chillicothe. In 1835, he laid out a town about the site of his hotel, which he called Locust Grove. CANNON Cemetery from http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/adams/cemeteries/franklin.txt Curtis and Rebecca Cannon’s children: L M 1810 – 1878 (I am quite sure this is Levin Cannon because of 1850 census record – Rebecca [his mother], age 77, is listed as living with him - and because of the rest of the people listed in this cemetery.) Lidia J 1820 – 1860 (I’m betting this is Levin’s wife – again, 1850 census records back this up. However, I am unsure as to whether this is the Aunt Jennie AKA: Aunt Cas mentioned in the diagram. Given that the two children below died so young, this would work with the comment that Aunt Jennie had no children of her own.) This Edward was born in 1833-34. That is where I am confused. Also are there anything documented that shows that Jacob and Jane had my Edward. I have tried to find documentation of that but so far no luck. I have Edwards military records from the civil war, but nothing shows up there as to who is parents were. If you could point me in the direction I might find this documentation, it would be greatly appreciated. I am not the only one researching this Edward and any help you could provide us would be very much appreciated. Thanks
