The Ohio State Historical Society's holdings of Manchester newspapers are mostly paper copy. I'd be grateful to know whether one of the libraries in Adams County holds both microfilm of Manchester newspapers and a working microfilm copier. Possibly the Manchester library? the Adams County Historical Society? Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YYB.2ACI/886.1.1.1.1.1.2.1.1 Message Board Post: The books are: Historical Collections of Adams County Ohio by Thompson pub. by Adams County Historical Society and A History of Adams County, Ohio 1900 by Evans and Stivers pub. by Little Miami Publishing. I bought both of mine from the Adams County Genealogical Society. Website: www.bright.net/acgs e-mail:acgs@bright.net . It costs 12.00 a year to join and they put out a nice newsletter quarterly. One thing I think is cool is that for 10.00 they will photograph a tombstone, school, house or anything you want. They are doing this to raise money for their building fund. They will also do queries for 5.00. All of this is done only by postal mail. They have a bunch of other publications for sale. It is helpful since a huge portion of the Adams County records were destroyed in a fire in 1910. I guess the Society has the burned records and has restored what they could. Anyway on to the little bit of Cannon info. I have. The Thompson book quotes an article in the Cincinnati Post of December 23, 1946 about Locust Grove and the Cannons. It says the Old Cannon Hotel was erected by Urban W. Cannon in 1830 and he planted a grove of Locust Trees, hence the name Locust Grove. It says the grove became a big gathering place and many political figures came there to talk to big crowds from the surrounding countryside. It says L.M. Cannon kept a store starting in 1833. I wonder if it was one of the stores hit by Morgan's Raiders in the Civil War because they apparently ransacked most of Locust Grove. Does anyone know? Thompson further states on p. 85 that Curtis Cannon kept a tavern in Locust Grove starting in 1805 and carried on a tannery, the first in this region. The other references to Curtis concern things he did as justice of the peace. Of Lydia Jane Cockerill, wife of Levin M, it states:Lydia Jane Cannon, of near Locust Grove, aged 40 years, died August 12, 1860. No other dates about Levin M. Another entry from Evans and Stivers is a biography of a Newton Wesley Zile b. December 8, 1863 near Locust Grove. Father, Lewis Zile b. August 5, 1821 Mother, Caroline Cannon, dau. of Byas N. Cannon, a native of Deleware and his wife Julia Ann Hern, also from Deleware. I remember seeing LOTS of Cannon tombstones at the Locust Grove Cemetery this past summer. I'm not sure if my transcript of the Hamilton family Bible would be very helpful as the only Cannon mentioned is Anna Rebecca but I'd be happy to share. One of my cousins from the my William Earley line has sent me a family tree with many of the descendants of George Henry and Anna Rebecca (Cannon) Hamilton. I can share if you want. Robin

She is Anna Rebecca CANNON wife of George Henry HAMILTON b. 1851 d. 1929 m. 4 Aug 1870. Her mother was Lydia Jane COCKERILL. George Henry HAMILTON b. 24 April 1842 d. 30 Nov 1894. Both are buried in Locust Grove Cemetery in Locust Grove, Oh. I visited their graves this past August and have pictures. George Henry served in the Civil War. He is the child of Henry HAMILTON and Lavina EARLEY. There are many Cannon's buried in the Locust Grove cemetery. This information comes from a transcript of the HAMILTON family Bible which was in the possession of a Mr. Roy HAMILTON who lives at Locust Grove, Adams Co., Oh. This copy was given me by my grandmother. The last entry is dated 1925. According to Evans&Stivers: History of Adams County, Lydia Cockerill was the daughter of General Daniel Cockerill. Lydia and Levin had five children, Daniel CANNON, of Lovett's Postoffice; Urban CANNON; Mrs. Anna HAMILTON of Locust Grove; Mrs. Flora HUGHES, of Lovett's Postoffice; and Mrs. J.F. WICKERHAM, of Peebles. (see p.915) Hope this helps!

Going to Grandma's house in Adams County for Thanksgiving. (Just like the song says! ;) Gonna work on Manchester Cemetery project while there. I'll be taking my digital camera and I'm willing to take requests for photos of your relatives' monuments. I have the capacity to shoot over 600 pictures in one trip. Obviously, I cannot capture the whole cemetery in one swell foop, since there are thousands of stones. However, I think I can likely cover all those on this list who are interested. I may be able to catch more at Christmas or on another visit. If you would like to request photos of your family's monuments/gravestones, please email me at diagonal@clas.net with as much info as you have, so I can compile a list. I can't reasonably take a request like "All Smiths" but anything more specific should work (given names, partial dates, etc). You don't have to know exactly where they're located. I plan to crawl the whole thing. My folks are scattered a bit. If it looks like a family grouping, I'll try to catch all within the group. What I capture will be a digital file only, in full-color jpg format (commonly usable). I do not produce printed photos. I'll be able to email the image(s) to you or devise other routes over the net if you cannot receive them that way. Of course, this is absolutely FREE. I just figured some folks would appreciate it and I'm going to be there anyway to do my own family. This only applies to the Manchester Cemetery (IOOF, on 8th Street) in the town of Manchester itself. I have no plans at this time to cover other cemeteries. (Although I could likely get some pix from the Presbyterian Church cemetery on 2nd Street, if you needed some there.) Just let me know via email by Tuesday before Thanksgiving. - Diana Henderson Probus
