I have suscribed to Adams county list for a few months now..or possibly since the beginning. This is the first time the name of Job Dinning/Denning, has surfaced. Job is one of my 4th great grandfathers. I knew he was a judge , but did not know he was a J.P. as well. I am wondering if there are document(s) pertaining to his appointment as a judge ,that may have any information on his birth place....He has been a brick-wall. Anyone have any ideas? 1. Re: [OHADAMS-L] CHAMBLIN AND SANTEE
    2. After reading your email I remember seeing the name Santee on some marriage records I got last summer in Adams County Ohio. I thought I would send you the information, hope it helps in your Santee line someplace. SANTEE to BROWN recorded Jan 7, 1833 State of Ohio Adams County I hereby Certify that this day I joined Samuel Santee & Margaret Brown together in the bonds of matrimony according to law given under my hand this 11th day of November 1832. Job Dinning J.P. I am not to sure about that Job's last name, it is scribbled on the copy I have. My great grandmother was a Santee, she was born in Drums, PA. Her family then moved onto Illinois where she met my great grandfather. That is probably why I remembered seeing the name Santee while in Ohio. Good Luck Carolyn

    1. [OHADAMS-L] John SWANGER as a Clue to John C. COOPER's Past
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of Adams County, Ohio, First, I would like to give a BIG thank-you to Mary Swanger Courtemanche, List Member, for her response to my query regarding the MORRISONs and John C. COOPER, who lived in Eckmansville, Wayne Township, Adams County, Ohio! Now that I know that John SWANGER arrived in Wayne Township, Adams County, Ohio in 1846 or 1847, it lends much more weight to my previous surmise that John C. COOPER came to Adams County, Ohio from Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. The only John C. COOPER in the 1840 Census of Pennsylvania was the one in Mifflin County! Both John C. COOPER and John SWANGER were coopers [cask and barrel makers] by occupation. I will certainly study Mifflin County, Pennsylvania more closely now! Query to Adams County, Ohio researchers: Have you found any more arrivals from Mifflin County, Pennsylvania? Again, thank you for your help! Randal W. Cooper <rwcooper@kellnet.com> Lorain, Ohio

    1. Re: [OHADAMS-L] tobacco growers
    2. Some time ago Hermon was kind enough to post to the list about raising tobacco. The tale brought memories back to me, including a story my grandfather used to tell of the "tobacco wars" in KY, his family had moved to Mason Co by the beginning of the 20th century. I have a picture of my grandfather standing in a filed of cotton with a pistol on his hip. Anyway, Hermon wasn't familiar with this, so I did some surfing on the web and didn't come up with much, but it was enough to "jog" my memory. At the turn of the century, Mr. Duke of the tobacco family had a monopoly on tobacco production in the US and drove prices down by being the ONLY entity to which tobacco could be sold. Vigilante committees were formed and neighbor burned out neighbor. My question, how serious did this get in Northern, KY? Does anyone else have stories to tell of this time? You had to know my grandfather to know how totally out of character that picture of him is. Mary Swanger Courtemanche

    1. [OHADAMS-L] Robert and William MORRISON and Eckmansville, Adams County, Ohio
    2. Randal W Cooper
    3. Dear Researchers of Adams County, Ohio, In 1803, Robert MORRISON came to where the village of North Liberty, Wayne Township, Adams County, Ohio now stands, and purchased a tract of land near where Eckmansville [Wayne Township] was laid out forty-some years later. Robert MORRISON's son William inherited this land. In 1824, the blacksmith William ECKMAN arrived in Wayne Township, at the future site of Eckmansville. Robert MORRISON died 10 Feb 1863, at age 81, and was buried in Cherry Fork Cemetery. Robert MORRISON's wife Phebe/Phoebe died 17 Aug 1866, and was buried by his side. She was born 15 Aug 1793. The MORRISONs played a key role in the prosperous days of Eckmansville, as bankers and as store owners. Eckmansville was a bustling community in the 1870's, but now is a quiet intersection of two roads, with its memories of the bygone era. Now for my two questions. #1: Does anyone know where Robert MORRISON was born, and where he came from when he arrived in Adams County, Ohio in 1803? His year of birth would have been about 1782. And #2: Did the MORRISONs have a part in John C. COOPER locating in Eckmansville in the late 1840's? John C. COOPER was born in Massachusetts about 1800, and by occupation was a "cooper" [cask and barrel maker]. John C. COOPER lived in Eckmansville from about 1849 to at least 1875, and was also a Justice of the Peace for Wayne Township. Mr. COOPER's wife's name was Ann, who was born about 1811 in Pennsylvania.
