Hi Betty Lou, My E-mail address is <DELSA007@aol.com> Sorry for getting back to you so late; just got back into town. Delsa
"Ohio D.A.R.Roster III" 1956-59 editors said "We are told that about 8,000 REV WAR Soldiers are buried in Ohio. Many lie on their farms with nothing more than fieldstones as markers, or no markers. [The co-editors shared great interest in one of the latter]. These same ladies were very active 1848-58 on the D.A.R. cemetary book of Clermont Co,and according to their book, they found almost no tombstones in Clermont Co pre 1816-17. I don't think they could be bought locally. Assumming the Rev War vets were born 1750-65, they had to live past 50-65 years to have a chance at a tombstone. My Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown's 1814 will made mention of his cemetary being fenced, but no mention of a tombstone. Indeed, he likely lived his last 40 years on the frontier, where there were no tombstones. Likely the Bethel, and Williamsburg cemetaries pre-date 1800. I can think of a few more churchyards from about 1807. But, lets used 1817 as a date to bother hunting a tombstone in Clermont Co.Oh. There is a 1798 GREGG tombstone on the Ky bank. He left descs in n Warren, and s Clermont Co. The 2 best cared for family cemetaries in Clermont Co that I can think of SWING,and the DONHAM. [3,DAY at MT Camel]. The Donham represents the best, and the worst. The Donham family cemetary is chain linked fenced, and mowed, and locked. It's located just at the edge of Spresser Rd. Visit in winter, and you'll see just across Spresser Rd is an over grown cemetary of fieldstones, and one must wonder if dead end Spresser Rd was built over some graves. Certainly, the north driveway in Old Bethel Methodist .at Bantam,Oh cemetary was built over graves. The latter has the tombstones of 7 REV War Vets. and the old part has only 50% tombstones [left]. When East Fork Lake State Park was built about 1970, a family [?] [forgotten churchyard?] cemetary had to be moved. 2 tombstones were known beforehand. A 3RD found during the removal ." and 50+ unmarked graves!" 3 MARKED,AND 50+ UNMARKED GRAVES! 1 of the 3 was a REV WAR Vet. How many of the 50+? ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Free software, free e-mail, and free Internet access for a month! I know they asked the children about the census. My family lists names that the children pronounced. So I was very surprised when I started my family tree. Good Luck, Marilyn Ackley
1980 census, one of my 2 daughteres was at Ohio U. I tried to get the census taker to list her at home 100+ miles west, but she wouldn't. Said that it would be taken in her dorm, which,of course,it was not. A pro genealogist has told me the 1960 census data was all transfered to computer punch cards, and the original data destroyed. Now,they still have the punch cards, but no longer the massive tube, instead of chip computer to read them. Back Up your data to several formats. My 1992 backups were to 5" floppies. I still have the drive to run big floppies stored in a closest, but no driver file to connect an old floppie drive to a modern computer. Hello Listers: Wow! I've been overwhelmed by the requests for look ups in the Evans & Stivers book. I'll try to respond to each of you privately. Please be patient. Yes, the book is available in most larger libraries with genealogical collections. I've seen it, for instance, at the Newberry Library in Chicago and at the State Library of Ohio in Columbus. I'm sure the Adams Co. Genealogical Society has a copy as well. To respond to those of you who asked where I purchased the book, I bought mine when the DAR in Adams County was offering the reprinted edition. Again, I would check with the Adams Co. Genealogical Society. They would know if it is still available. Margaret mlsopp@ix.netcom.com
Dear Margaret: Living in Arizona I haven't heard of this book. Would you be so kind to look up the surname CROPPER? Thank you, Anmarie in Phoenix
Thanks Dave, I appreciate that. Bob
Bob, The only reference I found to Stephen D. Paris in the book was that he was in Company B, 60th OVI in the Civil War. The info says that he was a private, and was captured at Winchester, VA. Dave Patton
Dear Margaret, I would like to know if Alexander or Hosea Sowers is listed in the book. Thanks Jan ===== J. L. Debbie: The History was written in 1900. I'm guessing the folks in which you are interested were born after that time. However, there aren't any Himes or Doyles in the index (actually the version of the book I have has 2 indexes). I have researching my family history which is the Himes, and one of my Aunts was married to a George Doyle. They ran off and got married when she was 19 to Adams Co.,Ohio. I need to know if you have a record of their marriage and if maybe George might be buried there in Adams Co. somewhere. I have looked in all the cemetaries in Lewis Co.Ky. where my Aunt lived, but find no gravesite for him. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Stephen D. Paris, born 11 Feb 1820, in KY, married Elizabeth A. Stivers, born 12 Apr 1823 in KY. Stephen D. Paris died 26 Feb 1907, Peebles, Adams Co, OH and is buried in Locust Grove Cemetery. They had a daughter, Anna Elizabeth Paris, born 4 May 1847 in KY, she married Francis M. Eubanks around 1870. I believe they were married in Adams County, OH. They are listed in the 1880 and 1900 census in Adams County. I would appreciate any information on the Stivers, Paris, Eubanks connection. Bob Eubanks Leesburg, FL
