I am wondering if anyone can give me any information or advice on the following two families, siblings of my g-g-grandmother: William SHORT, married Lucy BAKER (sister of my g-g-grandmother, Nancy Baker [Wall Grenzeback]) in 1827 in Hampshire Co., WV (then VA); they moved to Adams Co. sometime after 1830 and had children, of whom I know nothing; would love any info on them. Jesse Stockwell BAKER (brother of my g-g-grandmother), b. 1817, married Sarah Ann BAKER (no relation) in Hampshire Co. in 1841; they moved to Adams Co. sometime after 1850. Jesse died in Adams Co. 18 Aug. 1907; Sarah died there 22 April 1896. Don't know what township or where they are buried. Their children: Thomas David John William (m. Caroline MERRIFIELD) Franklin Jesse (m. Nancy Jane DOGGETT) Sarah Ellen (William John BAKER--no relation. What a family these Bakers are!) I'm particularly interested in finding out if there were other Baker siblings or relatives or associated families who also moved from Hampshire Co. WV to Adams Co. Lucy, Jesse, and Nancy were children of Peregrine and Deborah (Stockwell) BAKER. Thanks for any insights! Martha Grenzeback graymatters@ibm.net
I have about 2,700 in my database. The Joel Bailey family that moved to Adams Co in 1799. Rich
Reson Brown's tombstone is in the Rome-Procterville,Oh area. Some- time his son,OSCAR THOMPSON BROWN became skilled in apple growing, and,Yes,I know the ROME BEAUTY apple was found at Rome. [For what was Chesapeake,Ohio named-a colony? the RR?] Anyway, Oscar Thompson Brown would row the Ohio River in about 1890's to work at Huntington,WV. I think he helped boxcars. Anyway,he had a daily quota of driving 1 keg of nails a day. I see from WWW.ANCESTRY'S census that Irish Catholic potato famine immigrant,Michael Thornton, was in Huntington in the 1890 census. I suppose his dau m OSCAR THOMPSON BROWN on the Huntington WV side. Any thought's on 1890's marriage records on either side of the river. Maybe Catholic, thought I don't think OT Brown was Catholic. SE ADAMS CO,Oh RESEARCHERS. -Michael Thornton,ABOVE IS BURIED ON SUNSHINE RIDGE,Adams Co. Were there other Irish from Huntington WV in se Atlas. I have the reprint 1880 atlas of Adams Co,Oh. Will somebody pinpoint Sunshine Ridge for me? I was talking to a friend J.A.Brown,whose ggrandma was Kizzie Fagley, about his Clermont Co,Oh Brown's from Lawrence Co ,Oh. He said he went to the PROCTERVILLE-ROME-CHESAPEAKE ,Lawrence Co mid s Ohio River area to see the tombstone of his Reson Brown, b [what?] 1827 or 37. A search of Colonial Md wills for RESIN turned up Col Resin Hammond, and research on him showed his estate west of Annapolis,Md adjoined the "Brown's Forrest" and he willed part of "Brown's Addition. And a later generation will contest shows intermarriage between the families as in- CHANCERY COURT (Chancery Papers) 1816/06/12 347A: Richard Mackubin vs. John H. MSA S512-399 1/35/5/ CHANCERY I've about worn out my copy of Warfield's ' Founders of Anne ARUNDAL and Howard Counties,Maryland 'over the years. Warfield concentrated on several Browne families, and I find him nearly impossible to understand without a good map of those 2 counties, and adjoining. Anyway, where he talks of Resin Hammond, p 167,he talks of Valentine [s] Brown's. I'm just giving a source for Valentine 'Felty" Brown researchers. I think myself of George and Mary Stevenson Brown[e]. However,in our family was an Ohio River steamboat man,in -law of Capt James Campbell Powers.-Charles Carroll Brown, b 1847. He was noted for cleaning up Portsmouth Ohio about 1900. I would be lax not reporting the following from Warfield," 'Col Edward Gaither,JR,who witnessed Charles Carroll's will" himself willed to Col Rezin Hammond, friend, horse, sword, and ring. So any Valentine researchers out there, like those researching in the Filson Club, keep your eyes open for several RESIN BROWN. mORE THAN 1 RESIN HAMMOND; MORE THAN 1 Valentine Brown. I would not be shocked if my own Westminster,Md BROWN'S had roots also on Severn Bay,Annapolis, ___________________________________________________________________ Why pay more to get Web access? MaryAnn, Kind of in reference to another posting, is to check out this page... But if you can't this is the e-mail address for the guy who will do a lookup in Green Twp Cemeteries book. Be sure and put "Green Twp Cemeteries" in the subject line. RealMac@aol.com My other suggestion is looking at the censuses record for 1880 in Green Twp., this book is sold by the Adams Co. Genealogical Society for $10, the same for the Cemetery book. I also suggest if your ever in our wonderful area to be sure and stop at the Adams County Heritage Center in West Union, Ohio. We have tons of old records and all the censuses for Adams Co., and most of the surrounding Counties. Here's our address... The Adams County Genealogical Society P.O. Box 231 West Union, Ohio 45693-0231 PS-Ohio Residents must add 6% tax. I was going to suggest writing them and asking about their Bible Records but I have a list of their Index and their were no Verax's. I don't know but they may have a surname file on Verax. Good Luck, Delsey K. A.C.G.S. Vice President
Sue, I think this is the page you were looking for... http://www.zoomnet.net/~chipmunk/OHAdams/adrefcat.html By the way, if anyone is on this list can not access the internet, only their email. Let me know and I'll send you what it says. Good Luck And Happy Holidays, Delsey
Dear Adams County Friends: We've hit a brick wall regarding researching my g-g-grandfather. His name was Edmond Veredic Verax, and he lived in Green Township, Adams County, Ohio from 1876 until 1894 when he died. I have been given a copy of his obituary from the newspaper. However, it does not list a funeral home or church, just that that the services were conducted by a Rev. Wm. M. Shively. Where on earth would I search for a copy of his death record? We know nothing of Edmond's past (parents' names, etc.) and thought that a death record may list some important information. Also, I noticed that there are a few Shivelys listed in the Stout/Rome area in the phone directory. Could any of these people be related to Rev. Shively? If anybody can provide leads, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. MaryAnn Verax Meyer
Here is a link to a really good site. People that own books and are willing to do look-ups for researchers. > http://www.rootsweb.com/~bwo/ But I`m afraid you will be disappointed on a book that is offered for Adams Co.,Ohio. 1)Once you locate the section for Adams Co.,Oh. you will see a long impressive list of what appears to be the books available for look-ups. 2)Once you enter to give your request you will see that the only book available is: Mr.Griffis:A Study Of The Griffis Family Of America 1657 To Present Unless you are a "Griffis", or can connect your ancestry to a Griffis-forget it. I thought it was all misleading and I made a complaint to the editor. Sue Sisk
I am searching for information on the following families in Adams County: Verax (descendants of Edmond), Hitter (descendants of Henry or Carrie), Thornton (descendants of Elizabeth Ann Verax Thornton). If you are a member of one of these families, please contact me. If you know someone who is part of these families, please pass this message on to them. Thank you. MaryAnn Verax Meyer
