Hello thanks for the answer to the list. I have looked at the Brown Co Census that you have scanned. Found what I was looking for. I know that it is a picture scan. My question is this if we purchase a CD you then scan a portion of the census to the file - we need to have members purchase XX number to get the whole census scanned- Does our CD that we receive have a search capability and is the CD that we receive the whole Adams Co 1850 census? Please respond to the list. There are several of us very interested. Jan ===== Janice L. Hi Wilma, I used to think the same thing. Since then, I learned that Adams Co was the main county at the time of the 1850 census, manchester was a major river port. Each twp. has about 40 pages of actual census pages at 40 lines each. it is a large census. The transcribed census that they are selling was transcribed back in the 1980's and it was done with out copiers or computers and was very time consuming. I do not know how they did it and not go nuts. I am transcribing the 1870 from copies/microfilm and using a computer and I have been forever on the first 5 twps. Just think ,they charged the same $10.00 back then, when $10.00 was worth $10.00. The volunteers at Adams Co. are happy to help you locate which twp. your family is from, so that you only buy the ones you really need. The CD from S & K publications is the whole county of the 1850 census. Scanned actual pages. Hope this helps! Christine: My family came from Shenandoah County, VA after 1816 and before 1820. They first settled in Brush Creek Twp., Highland Co., but several members moved to Adams County. My gggg grandmother, Mary Sprinkle, was widowed in Shenandoah County, VA in about 1814. She showed up on the Shenandoah Co. Personal Property Tax Lists in 1814, 1815, and 1816. Then she disappears until appearing on the 1820 census in Highland County, Ohio. We feel she must have come with family or close friends. It doesn't seem likely a widow with 10 children ranging in age from age 2 to 22, would make that journey without knowing others at her destination. Several of her children, including my ancestor, David Sprinkle, settled in Adams County. David lived in Jacksonville, Meigs Twp., and then moved down to near Rome (Stout), Green Twp., where he died in 1876. The Sprinkles were of German descent and originally Lutheran. Margaret
Dear Listers, I have been trying for years to figure out where my family came from before Adams Ct. The only lead I have is a possiblity of Shenandoah Ct., Va. (NW part of state just below Frederick Ct.) and possibly the town of Woodstock. Does anyone have ancestors who migrated from this same area? I'm guessing it was 1810-1820 maybe a little earlier. They may have intially been across the Ohio in Mason Ct.. and likely came down the Ohio on a flatboat from Pa.. It is likely that my families were of German descent. The 2 names I am researching are Welch and Auckerman. They may have been Lutherans. My Welches settled in Jefferson Twp,in the area of Marble Furnace, later changed to Franklin Twp. and the Auckermans in Meigs Twp.. Both families may have at sometime moved up into Highland Ct. too and came back eventually. Maybe someone has a similar situation with possible Germans and Lutherans. I would love to hear from anyone who has any ideas. I've been stumped for a long time. THANKS!! Christine Welch Harrison cwelch@neo.rr.com
Hi, Betty - On the Adams Co. site, they list what twps, are included. I don't know how many twps. there are in Adams Co., but I think that one of us should check it out! I want it, too, but not if it isn't the entire co. Re: Brown Co. Why do they charge so much more? I think I counted 13 Twps listed for $10 each! That's $130. for that County's 1850 census. Also, Highland Co. printed their 1650, and it sold/is selling for about $30. Brown Co. seems 'way out of line. Wilma
Hi Jan, I believe that it will have the whole Adams Co. OH 1850 census on it, or they will hear me scream loud and long! I to, am hoping for a search feature, that is available on most CD's. I will ask them if they can give us an answer on the search capabiliies. Mark, I saved this message that you sent to the list last May and was curious if you were able to locate the trusties of the Cemetery. My GG Grandparents are buried there, along with several of their children and grandchildren. James Abbott, Virnillia (Hayslip) Abbott, etc. Their graves are located just to left of the entrance, near the fence. I have been to the cemetery and was wondering whom else might be there, other than what I have read on the stones. If you have any additional information, I would definitely be interested. Thanks.. So Betty, Does the CD have a search - I went to the uploaded Brown Co. and did finally fine Abraham Sowers in the written census. It took hours to go though each page but I guess you are doing it and not depending on someone else to index it. Certainly took a long time loading up each page. Will the CD we order have the whole census? And they S & K upload one page as we buy a whole CD - Or do I still have it wrong. By the way the newsletter publications alone are worth the 10.00 The Historical Society is run by volunteers unlike mine here in Il which gets tax dollars.(Course my library card was 168.00 this year). Adams is self supporting like Lewis Co., Ky is. We should all be members for 10.00 a year. And if that is too much send them 5.00 after they do a lookup for you. Please don't slam me with how poor we all are. We each waste 5.00 year. Of course my husband is not included in that 'All'. Gen. Soc. and I was the one that mentioned the Family Bibles. They are in the Society's library in West Union. I have a copy of the index, but you would have to write the Soc. to receive a copy for $.25 each. I looked in the index and found that the surname LITTLE is found in Book 2, in the Little - Lindsay Bible, & Book 3, in the Samuel Steen Family Bible. Now they get records constantly so they may have more. Here's their address: (By the way, it's only $10 a year for a membership) ADAMS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY P.O.
