    1. [OHADAMS] Ohio River access to Adams Co.??
    2. Phyllis Ryerse
    3. Hi gang! I've spent the afternoon poking around all over the internet.....looking for anything about those early settlers coming down the Ohio on their fragile flatboats....and pulling off along the way.....liking what they saw and deciding to settle there! I didn't find much. Guess I'm looking in the wrong places. What have any of you folks found on this subject?? Web pages/books/whatever! But wait, the River was not the only "way in" to Adams County. How about Zanes Trace?? How did YOUR ancestors end up in Adams?? ...and even more interesting...WHY did they choose Adams Co.?? Phyllis in Atlanta ps...I could also use some help on when Adams became Adams....and when Brown became Brown. I've misplaced my favorite Dollarhide map book!

    1. [OHADAMS] occupation of residents in Adams & Brown Co OH - 1830
    2. A few months ago I visited the area in Huntington Twp Brown Co OH where my gg-grandfather, Thomas KENNEDY, lived in 1830. The site was up a steep hill near Eagle Crk. I am wondering how the people who lived there made their living as there did not seem to be an area large enough for all the people who lived there to do any farming. Virgene in northwest IN

    1. Re: [OHADAMS] Migration to Adams County
    2. I suggest those with families in Adams County, especially those who settled near furnaces, check in Cumberland County, PA for possible ancestors. My HORN family came from the area that is now in Perry County, PA. They were members of the Centre Presbyterian Church there. They moved to Adams County @ 1800. I believe a lot of the members of that church settled in Adams & Highland County, OH. >From the church Rolls of Centre Presbyterian Church from @ 1800 or before, I see the following names: ADAIR, ADAMS, ALEXANDER, CALDWELL, CAMPBELL, CARSON, CLARK, DAVIS, DELZELL, DOUGLAS, DUNBAR, EVERHART, FISHER, GIBSON, HAMILTON, KENNEDY, KINKEAD, LOGAN, MAGILL, MARSHALL, McCLURE, McCORD, McCOY, McMILLEN, MILLER, MORRISON, PATTERSON, ROBINSON, RODDY, ROSS, SCHOTT, SHAW, STEWART, THOMPSON, WILLIAMSON, WILSON and WELCH. There are many others. The Perry County(PA) Historians have a library and a web site. They are very helpful. Good luck, Delsa

    1. Re: [OHADAMS] Re:Bentonville, Ohio, Nathaniel Mitchell
    2. Jane Soder
    3. Sylvia, Nathaniel Mitchell was a Private in an Ohio Company the War of 1812. His Captain was Jacob Young. (This is from "History of Knox Co., Ohio" by Evans.) I know this is not your Nathaniel, but it might be a grandfather, etc. There may be more about your ancestors in that book. An even earlier Nathaniel Mitchell (1728-1773) had a daughter named Hannah, who married John Young in Morris Co., NJ Nov. 30, 1768. This Nathaniel was married to Abigail Harris, and his parents were Jacob and Hannah Halstead Mitchell and grandparents were James and Mary Mitchell who came to America from Scotland about 1683. Hannah Mitchell had at least two sisters, Elizabeth and Abigail, and two brothers, Jacob and William. Abigail, Jacob, and William moved to Frederickstown, Ohio. William Mitchell died August 12, 1848, at age 83 and is buried at Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He married Phebe Southard, who died in 1861. William and Phebe Mitchell had children including Naomi, Mary, Silas (1814-1899), and Rev. John Mitchell (1806-1863). This family lived near Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio, and some are buried in the Mound View Cemetery there. If you can connect to this family, there is more in the "OUR YOUNG FAMILY IN AMERICA" book. There is a William Mitchell, Jr. mentioned, born July 15, 1811 in Knox Co., OH, and md. Lucy Brown, May 23, 1833.. They had a son named Rollin, b. April 7, 1847. These Mitchell families lived in Knox County, not Adams County. However, I understand that parts of Knox Co. used to be part of Adams County. And some of their cousins, etc. moved at about the same time to Adams County. If you can give me the names of any others in your MITCHELL family who lived in Ohio, even later generations, I might be able to find them. Or give me other related Ohio surnames. 3. John Fulton McClure b.11Sep 1829 in Adams Co., OH, d.11 Jun 1900 in Marion Co., KS, m. Elizabeth Lowry 24 May 1849 also in Adams Co. He served in Co. G, 172nd Regt, Ohio Volunteer Infantry from 2 May 1864 until 13 Sep 1864 and was discharged at Gallipolis, OH. We believe his siblings to be: Susan, William (S), Ollie, Clyde, Alvin and Jennie. He left Adams Co. and moved to McLean Co., IL, in the fall of 1868 where they resided until 1872 when they moved to Marion Co., KS. We have been unable to find the parents of John and would appreciate any help we can get. He named his two sons - Richard Morrison McClure and William (Willis) Steele McClure so we wonder about a connection with a Fulton and/or Steele family. Elizabeth Lowry's family are buried at Cherry Fork, Adams Co. John was a Presbyterian from the age of 15. Please contact me if you have any information! Thanks to the list.

    1. [OHADAMS] Eubanks, Francis M., Adams Co, OH
    2. I received this taday and had to share it with the list. If anyone knows more about my family, please let me know. My grandfather, Marion Stephen Eubanks, was called Stephen. He was born in 1873 in Buena Vista, Adams /Scioto County, Ohio. His father was Francis M. (Frank) Eubanks, born 1837 ...KY Bob Eubanks Leesburg, FL Got your e-mail messages. I come through Elliott Eubanks from Adams/Brown Counties, OH. He was killed in the Civil War, Co. 'E,' 7th OH Cavalry, in Feb. of 1863. He was the son of Herrington Eubanks, born in PA , son of James Eubanks I think, he and his brothers, father John Eubanks, all came to Fleming Co. KY in the late 1790's from Talbot Co. MD, then on into so. Ohio. I'm sure you have already been in contact with the following persons, but back in 1984, I was corresponding to a Maureen Jones Lee of Addison, AL, whose grandmother was Eliz. C. Jones, daughter of Walker Eubanks, b.Aug. 14, 1838 in Mason Co. KY, married Catherine Eliz. Rogers in 1874 in Glasgow, MO, died July 1, 1917 in Leavensworth, KS.He was in the 39th OH Infantry, Co. 'I,' from Adams Co. OH. He had a sister Sarah, brother Marion F. or 'Frank' Eubanks. Frank''s children were Geo. W., James, Oscar, Cyrus, Stephen, John, Sarah, Wm. H., Lizzie. Seem to be your kin. Maureen told me a descendant of Frank Eubanks and Anna Parris had sent her material. I also used to correspond with a Charles Eubanks, of Peebles, OH in Adams Co., His grandfather was Marion Franklin Eubanks who married a Lydia Paris, supposedly from Paris, KY, in Bourbon Co. They had Bert, John, Stephen, Elizabeth, William (Charles' father), Mary, Edward and Walter. He told me, "All I know, is that my mother said that my Grandfather told her that there were he, his brother and one sister, and that their mother and father died, and they were put out in homes, became separated and he never knew what became of them." I received a letter from his in December of 1978, he was 71 years old at that time. I had called him on the phone on July 31, 1978, and he told me the above as well. He said that "3 boys and a girl (a sister) came down the Ohio River on a flatboat, one got lost. They were from Virginia. Their parents had died in Virginia. They were put out...but later all got together and came to the Ohio area." Charles grandfather rode with Morgan's Raiders. His great-grandfather being from Tennessee, disowned his son when he run off and joined the Confederate guerilla fighter. That's all I have. Hope it helps. Dan Rolph

    2. Jane Soder
    3. Sylvia, there is a Nathaniel Mitchell named in a book about my ancestors: "Our Young Family in America." This Nathaniel Mitchell was b. 1728 and d. 1773. However, some of his descendents moved to Adams County, OH. There are several intermarriages between the Mitchell family and the Young family, 1st in NJ, then PA, then OH. Others Mitchells named in the Young family book are: Elizabeth, Hannah, Jacob, James, John, Lena, Mary, Naomi, rollin, Ruth Comfort, Silas, amd William. Would you like information on any of these? > "R.
