He was born on 11 May 1860 and died on 8 Aug. 1916 in Rome, Ohio. He was married to Ella "Eleanor" Sumpter on 13 Jan 1883 in Lawrence County, OH. Ella was his step-sister and daughter of his father Michael Ailshire/Elshire's 2nd wife, Elizabeth Ann Atkins Sumpter. Stephen's mother was Nancy Dodge. Michael and Nancy were married 7 Nov 1836 in Floyd Co. IN. Michael and Elizabeth were probably married in either Meigs or Lawrence County, OH. I don't have a marriage date on the latter marriage. Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth "Lyda" Sumpter married George Ailshire, Stephen's brother in Apr. 1888. Lyda later divorced George for gross neglect of duty, refusing to work and lack of support. I am descended through yet another brother, James Nelson "Thomas" Ailshire who married Mary Ellen Blythe.

Her husband William Robert Piatt was born July 2 1882 in Adams County. They got married August 1902 in West Union. William died December 26 1955 in Portsmouth, OH. They adopted his nephew William Edward Shaw. He was born March 27 1928 and died February 24 2000 in South Shore Kentucky. They use to live in Turkey Creek when they were younger. I use to stay with them for 2 weeks every summer. Aunt Alice always cooked the best pinto beans and fried potatoes. William Robert is the son of Jackson Pierce Piatt and Barbara Ellen Chamblin. They use to live Tiffin, Oh. I have been looking up Stephen and Mary Ailshire. William and Dora Alice are both buried in Rush Town Cemetery out by Mc Dermott, Scioto, OH that is by Lucasvil! le and Coals Park on the out skirt of Portsmouth. Most of my family is buried there with them. They are buried in the old section on the first row about half way up. His two brothers Mark (my dad ) and Uncle George and their wifes. I left Ohio in 1963. I can't go back there to look them up. If you live close, you could go to the court house in Adams County in West Union. You could probably find records on them. If you find anything on them please let me know. I am doing the family tree on the Piatts. The court house could tell you where they are buried at. Stephen was 49 years old in the 1910 cenus. He was probably born in 1859 or 1860. And his wife Mary E Sumpture was born in 1862 or 1865. I would like to see the pictures that you have on the Ailshires and the Piatts. John Piatt is my nephew that has been writing to you. Him and I are both working on the tree. Aunt Alice was little and short woman that always wore a bonnet and long dress. I loved her. She! was my favorite aunt. The last time I saw her was at my dad's funneral when my dad died. She died two weeks later. I was living in Elyria, OH. That picture that you mention with George and Bill are my Uncles. My dad Mark and My mother Grace Heilser. They were born in Green Township, OH. You mention a Margaret Piatt. George's second wife was Margaret Evelyn Deboard. Do you know anything about Alice mother and father ? We got a picture of Dora Alice and her mother that my nephew Floyd sent to me. I would like to send it to you. Maybe you would reconize it. I hope to hear from you. Betty J Piatt Mitchell
I have been working on Henry Rogers (Rev. War soldier) who settled in Hamilton County, OH after the war. I believe that two of his daughters married McFEELY brothers who had Adams County connections. I can, through secondary sources and educated guesses backed by supporting evidence not quite proof, trace Henry back to John ROGERS of Milford, CT and across the ocean. If you think my Henry bears any relation to this William and John ROGERS, I'd be glad to share my information. On the other hand, if your ROGERS research has revealed anything about the origins of the McFEELY's (probably from Virginia) I'd love to know more about them. Cathy Brinkman

Surnames: Rogers Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YYB.2ACI/1583 Message Board Post: To Whom It May Concern: It appears some researchers have confused Damy's dates with Dorcas' and thus have confused Dorcas' husband William and Damy's first husband John. Dorcas and daughter Abigail are buried in the Sandy Springs Cemetery east of Rome, OH. Next to them is a plaque ostensibly for John Rogers. Some researchers have picked up the info. that Dorcas remarried in September 1831 and expired in 1832. My research indicates that John Rogers formerly of Adams Co., OH died in KY in 1826. His wife Damy is the one who remarried in September 1831, evidently in Adams Co. Anyway, she and her second husband appear in court records there relative to the guardianship of her and John's minor children. Dorcas Oliver Rogers preceded William in death in 1832. A local veteran's org. was given info. to put on a plaque for John celebrating him as a Rev. War vet. and the plaque was placed next to Dorcas' grave. The plaque seems to have some data from William and some from John. William was born Dec. 15, 1755 or 1754. The plaque indicates John was born about 1757 and died 1838. John died in 1826. Perhaps it was William, then, who expired in 1838. I personally have not found a death date for him but that seems to be about the time he died. If anyone is buried next to Dorcas it would seem to be William, as John reportedly was buried in KY. William served in the 1st Regiment of the New Jersey Militia 1777-1780 and was known as "an old Revolutionary War soldier" when he lived in Adams Co. Evidently many such settled around 1800 near Washington at the place where Ohio Brushy Creek empties into the Ohio River. William later moved to Sulphur Creek northeast of Rome. His children were William M. m. Nancy Mongtomery (dau. of Samuel Montgomery of Stout's, Adams Co.), Oliver (married Rebecca Montgomery, Nancy's sister), Sarah Rogers Gifford (her husband was a son of Pickle Gifford), and Abigail who was infirm and never married. In a cursory review of the 1st Reg. of the NJ Militia there was no John Rogers listed, but William was listed. If John who expired in 1826 served in the Rev. War perhaps it was in another regiment. It appears the plaque should be commemorating William Rogers. William Rogers was from MD and served in the NJ Militia fighting in the Battles of Germantown (the last battle of Washington's troops before their sojourn at Valley Forge) and at the next battle after the troops left Valley Forge (Monmouth Field/Courthouse?). His was an Express Rider unit. It would appear William was at Valley Forge. It is not clear why he served with the NJ Militia but they were near the MD line when he enlisted for three years. It is not clear where he was between 1780 and about 1800 - possibly NJ or PA (possibly southwest PA) and/or MD. It is not clear if he was related to the children of Ezekiel Rogers (son of Hezekiah of PA) to whom John was a son as William's name does not appear in Ezekiel's family bible as a son. Yet he seems to have come into Adams Co. about the time Ezekiel and his sons did, and settled near them for a time. It is not clear where William met Dorcas Oliver. Some think she was Native American - Cherokee. Her's may be a NJ family. Some Olivers came to NJ from New England when the Monmouth Patent was settled. I hope this information helps pertinent researchers. Background on the above can be found sorting through the notes in the Rogers file at the Adams Co. Genealogical Society in West Union, OH.

I am seeking information on the surnames CHUNN, GRIMES, CURRAN, CARSON, and KIMBLE in the area of Sprigg Twp., Adams County, OH. Robert Henry Chunn married Sarah (Sally) Grimes in 1822 in Adams County. They had the following children: Thomas Reed, Charles, Mary Ann, William Grimes, Sally Ann, and John Brookover. Thomas Reed Chunn lived in Brown County, Aberdeen Twp., as did his son Robert N. Chunn, and then moved to Maysville, Macon County, Kentucky. William Grimes Chunn married Levenia Ruth Curran in Adams County about 1873, and had the following children: William Beam, Clyde, Gertrude, and Raymond Clifton. Clyde died at abt. age 2. Gertrude married a Pownall. William Beam Chunn was my grandfather. He married (1) Sarah Jane Carson and (2) Ethel Lydia Reed. I'm descended from the second marriage. >From family stories, I understand that the Chunn family lived right on the Ohio River in a two-story house, with a skiff tied to the porch to get out in case of floods. Nearby neighbors included a Frank Kimble, b. abt 1873, who was not only the same age as my grandfather, William Beam Chunn, but a best friend. The two of them often went hunting, etc., together. I have a picture of my nattily dressed grandfather and one other man. I think that the other man may be this Frank Kimble. My aim in posting this message is to find both descendants and surnames of the above-mentioned people, and also to perhaps connect with descendants of Frank Kimble who might like a copy of the picture I have and could possibly help with identification. I am seeking any information available about the life and times of these ancestors. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Letha Chunn-Mendivil
