Hi Cousin Mary, My husband has Lloyd marrying into his Millman line. I think orginally from Ohio. I have yet to work on that collateral line. Too many facts to discover on Rogers yet. I should dig out the info and do a quick online census check and share info with you. Who knows, we might have another entangled tree branch. Have 30yrs of diaries from JOhn Francis Lloyd (or Loyd). Seeing all the activity on the board, would like to post the names LLOYD and HAINES once again. David LLOYD m. Nancy HAINES in Tiffin Twp 1833, lived in Liberty Twp. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/YYB.2ACI/1606.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Donna: I have also read about Gen David Bradford (m Barbara Grimes) from other sources including articles about the Whiskey Rebellion and that he fled PA to New Orleans to keep from being arrested for his part in the rebellion. I also read that he built a house there for his wife and children. This has confused me also because I know that others list Gen Bradford as being part of their family tree and listing that he moved to Adams County. I do not know how to reconcile this with what I have found in my research. The article I referred to in my previous message states the following: "The Bradford family is of Irish origin, but we can learn little of the history of their ancestry. As far back as we can gather anything authentic, it is that two brothers, David and William, who came from Pennsylvania or Virginia, settled in Adams County. David came at a very early date and settled at the mouth of Brush Creek, on the Ohio River. He became a very prominent man in the county, serving as County Treasurer from 1801 to 1831, a period of thirty years. When the county seate was removed, he was among the first to locate in the new town of West Union, coming here in 1801, as soon as the town was laid out. He built the first hotel in the place and opened a tavern in 1806. William Bradford, the other brother, was the grandfather of David M. Bradford, the subject of this sketch. It appears that the father of William died when the son was but a child, and the little fellow was placed in a! family of strangers, somewhere in Virginia, with whom he lived until he grew to the years of manhood. In 1819 he left Virginia, came to Adams County and settled in West Union where he stayed for a year, then moved to Sprigg Township and settled in Fox's survey, No. 401, on the Ohio River where he lived and died." The article goes on to name all of William's children, who they married and dates of marriages, grandchildren, etc. etc. Now, just so you can be as confused as I am, there is a folder at the Adams County Historical Society all about Bradfords. I copied several pages to bring home with me (I live in SC). The society is only open 4 hours on Thursday afternoon and I think 4 hours on Saturday. I could have stayed a week and not gotten everything that is available. There is an article about Samuel Robert Bradford's family and it is the same ones that you refer to. The article was copied from an article in the Washington PA library and says that Samuel was born in Ireland and married Sarah Bradford (no relation). They emigrated to America about the middle of the seventeenth century and settled in Cecil Co. MD :"near the head of the Elk" (now Elkton) - removed to Westmoreland Co. PA, now Fayette Co, year not known. Both Samuel Robert and Sarah are buried at Bradford, PA or as it is now called - Broadford, Fayette Co. PA. Their children: 1. William (m Margaret Parkinson of Washington, PA) b. 8 Jan 1770 d. 9 Oct ? near Maysville, KY (Maysville is almost directly across the river from where the Bradford farm was located. 2.Rebecca Bradford (m William Miller b 1730, d 1814). b. 1759 m 1778 d. 18 Mar 1835 resided near Connellsville, Fayette Co. PA buried Broadford, PA Their children: William, James, Samuel, Abraham, Jess, Stephen, Rebecca, David. 3. David Bradford (m Barbara Grimes) b d Resided in West Union, Adams Co. OH David and Barbara's children were Samuel and David. I have two other articles with different versions of the David Bradford history. Let me send those to you next time. They are lengthy. They may be good enough copy to scan but the print is poor quality so I am not sure.

Surnames: Bradford/Miller Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/YYB.2ACI/1606.1.1 Message Board Post: Shirley - thanks so much for the information. That David & William were adopted is astonishing new information. I have had the family group as follows: Hus: Samuel Bradford b. 1727 (gr. gr.son of Gov. Bradford?) Wife: Sarah (father Samuel Bradford of Red Lyon, PA). Children: Jane b. ?? Rebecca b. 1760 in PA (town unknown), m. William Miller David b. 1765 in PA (m. Barbara Grimes) William b. 1770 (m. Margaret Parkinson) The above William and Rebecca are my 2 gr grandparents. They married in 1778 in Elkton, Cecil Co, MD (that's where William is from), then went to Fayette Co, PA for the rest of their lives. The family legend is that Rebecca's brother was "the famous Attorney General Bradford" of Whiskey Rebellion fame, but as we both noted, that just cannot be. So now the confusing things to me are: 1. Why did some Adams Co. history books say he was the famous David Bradford from the Whiskey Rebellion (did he claim to be so, or did the history books just get it wrong?). 2. Did Samuel and Sarah Bradford adopt David and William (they couldn't be the parents that died and left orphans, since Sarah is buried near her daughter, Rebecca, in Fayette Co, PA, having died at age 80). If, according to that history book, David and William were "left with a family in PA or VA, Samuel and Sarah were supposedly from PA, so that would work. Does that book mention any town or county name? 3. Where did Samuel and Sarah (David's adopted parents?) come from. I have an old DAR record that says they settled in Elkton, Cecil Co, Maryland, but I've never been able to locate them there (ofcourse there aren't many records from the mid-1700's!). Their daughter, Rebecca, did marry a man from Elkton, so perhaps they were there at some point in time, but I'm thinking Samuel and Sarah got togeter somewhere in eastern PA, since the records say they were from PA, and also because Sarah's father is supposed to be from Red Lyons, PA, which is sort of in the southeastern part of the state, not too far over the border from Elkton, MD. I'm not sure where you tie in to the family, so I hope you don't mind these questions. Thanks again for your information. As I said, the revelation about David and William being adopted is really a bombshell! Don't you wish they left detailed journals of their lives - sure would make things easier! Thanks again, donna

The David Bradford in West Union came from PA (? or VA (?). According to a book in the West Union Public Library, "Historical Sketch of Adams County, OH", David was one of two brothers. They were orphans after their mother and father died and were left with a family in either PA or VA. David came to Adams Co and settled on Brush Creek. In 1801 he moved to West Union when the town was laid out. His wife was Barbara Grimes and they are buried at the rear of their homestead in West Union, according to records at the Adams Co. Historical Society. David was treasurer of Adams Co. from 1801 until 1831. He built the first hotel in West Union, called Bradford's Tavern. He started building it in 1804 and it was opened in 1806. West Union is near the path of the old Zane Trace trail and so at least 2 US presidents stayed there. That building is still standing today and is called the Wayside Inn. I have eaten lunch there. The last time we were in West Union, a few months ago, it was closed. I do not know if that was a temporary or permanent closing. David and Barbara had two sons, David and Samuel. David's brother, William, also came to Adams Co. but it was later, about 1817 or 1819. He was married to Margaret Parkinson. They had 12 children, one of whom was named David, so you see that there were several Davids in the area. That is probably more than you asked for. If you want further details feel free to e-mail me.
They were at least married in Adams County. All I have is that Deborah Cooper was from Adams County Ohio and married George Crosswhaite, born 1830, in Boone County KY. It's a huge hole in my paternal line. We're hoping that if we can get some document with his father's name on it we can link this up to Crosthwaite's in 691, in England. Very frustrating indeed.... So Deborah Cooper and a marriage confirmation may be the key... She is the #1 priority on my searches :::::sigh:::: Charlotte -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Sent: 08/01/03 05:13 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHADAMS] Re: Adams County - Cooper > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
