    3. Hi Janie, sounds like a great idea you have there for researching the Pike Co. soldiers!  I do not have any photos, so sorry. Your best bet would be to contact the Pike Co. historical society or genealogy society. The Ohio Historical Society might have photos or stories from Pike county. You can get the websites on google. Good luck! and thanks for thinking of me. 3. Thank you, Peggy. My guy James Hudelson must have been a bit of a hell-raiser. He made it to First Class as a fireman, started over as a WT3, made it to WT2, then was demoted, then promoted again. He was a "plank-owner" on the ship, and served on the same ship until the war was over. Thanks again, Dave On Sat, Mar 23, 2013 at 6:38 PM, Kinhunter <kinhunter@starband.net> wrote: > Hi, David, > > >From Wikipedia: > > A watertender is a crewman aboard a steam-powered ship who is responsible > for tending to the fires and boilers in the ship's engine room. > > In the United States Navy, "watertender" (abbreviated WT) was a petty > officer rating which existed from 1884 to 1948. 3. Hi, David, From Wikipedia: A watertender is a crewman aboard a steam-powered ship who is responsible for tending to the fires and boilers in the ship's engine room. In the United States Navy, "watertender" (abbreviated WT) was a petty officer rating which existed from 1884 to 1948. Watertenders held a paygrade equivalent to today's petty officer first class. A chief watertender (CWT) paygrade was established in 1903. In 1921, the lower paygrade was split into watertender first class (WT1 or WT1c) and watertender second class (WT2 or WT2c). Another lower paygrade, watertender third class (WT3 or WT3c), was established in 1943. The watertender and boilermaker ratings were merged into a new "boilerman" rating in 1948. As for F3c, etc., yes, that is Fireman. Hope this helps, Peggy On Mar 23, 2013, at 3:28 PM, David Hudelson wrote: > Researching Petty Officer James Richard Hudelson, a crewman aboard the > World War II destroyer escort USS FOSS (DE59), I see him listed in various > quarterly rosters as "F3C," "F2C", "F1C", then "WT3C", and "WT2C." > Does anybody know if "F3C" equals "Fireman, Third Class," as I infer? 3. Researching Petty Officer James Richard Hudelson, a crewman aboard the World War II destroyer escort USS FOSS (DE59), I see him listed in various quarterly rosters as "F3C," "F2C", "F1C", then "WT3C", and "WT2C." Does anybody know if "F3C" equals "Fireman, Third Class," as I infer? It's a wild guess that "WT3C" was a "Weapons Technician," perhaps on a gun crew, or perhaps on a depth charge crew. Can anybody confirm that?

    1. [OH-VETERANS] Spanish American War Volunteers
    2. My husband's grandfather, Melzer Amos Shaffer, was born in Morgan Twp, Gallia County, OH, 11 Jan 1879, and lived in Cheshire Twp, Gallia, OH, until he moved to Oklahoma with his family in 1902. He died in La Junta, CO in 1946. Over the last few years the family has noticed a flag has been placed on his grave, at Walsh, Baca, CO, and in the last five years his name was placed on a Veteran's memorial at the county seat of that county. The family had no idea that he was a veteran, but his son thought he might have been in La Junta, CO to be treated at Fort Lyon VA medical. We can find no other reference to his military service in Baca County, CO. We have been unable to find where they memorial committee found his name to put on the memorial. In 1918, he signed up for the required draft, while living in Nabisco, Texas Co, OK, at age 39. We know he did not serve in WWI. Therefore, we are thinking he may have served in the Spanish American War/ Phillippine Insurrection between 1898 to 1902. He would have been 19-20 years old during those years. We understand from studying websites concerning these wars, that volunteers signed up in their areas and went as volunteer units, instead of the usual enlistment process into the Armed Services. I am trying to find out where he might have enlisted in a volunteer unit from Gallia County, OH. I have sent to the National Archives for his information, but not knowing for sure his time of service, nor where he enlisted or was discharged, I'm not sure they will be able to find his information. If anyone can give me any ideas of where to look, I would appreciate it. I have been told to contact a local veteran's service officer to look up his service number, but I was not sure they would be open to that as they have current veteran's with more urgent problems. Thanks for any information.

    3. Have you tried to get his pension files from the National Archives? That costs some but they will send you all the paperwork they have that emanated from his application for a pension. I have gotten that information on 2 of my ancestors and it has quite a bit of information. Since you know his unit, etc. that will facilitate their finding the file. It may take a bit but is worth it. Joey ____________________________________________________________ Shop & save big on a huge selection of brand name flooring. 3. Sharon, The fort is probably Ft. Garland, Colorado. You might want to visit their sites at http://www.legendsofamerica.com/co-fortgarland.html or http://www.coloradohistory.org/hist_sites/ft_Garland/ft_garland.htm and try to contact them. The old restoration forts in the west have available varying amounts of history and documents depending on the interest of the staff and amount of financing available. These websites appears more geared to tourism than history, but its worth a try.
