Wright Protege Perishes on First Air Trip Alone. Article Text: Xenia, O., May 21.--Fred J. SOUTHARD, aged 40, of Minneapolis, Minn., an amateur flyer, fell one hundred feet at the Wright aviation field near Osborn today and was instantly killed. SOUTHARD had just bought the aeroplane from the Wright Brothers. He obtained the keys to the hanger, after he had been refused permission to take the aeroplane out without further experience. He fell just six minutes after he had begun the first flight alone.
