HIRAM MCCARTNEY Article Text: Logan County Index, 2 Apr 1896 AN OLD RESIDENT Indulges in a Few Reminiscences AND RECALLS SOME OLD TIMES As Well as Old Faces, Old Houses, Old Citizens and Old Memories. HIRAM MCCARTNEY Hiram McCartney was a brother-in-law of Canby [Richard Sprigg Canby], having also married a Simpson [Sarah Simpson daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Simpson]. The Simpson girls were noted for their beauty. McCartney was an erratic, brilliant and able lawyer, of wonderful persuasive eloquence, and had his health permitted he would have won golden fruit at the bar. He was an Atheist and was loud in the proclamation of his religious ideas, and frequently offensive to his hearers. He defended the murderer Hellman and it was alleged that he assisted him to escape from jail, and as his horse was hitched to the fence some miles from town on the morning after Hellman’s escape, it gave some color to the charge. He lived on the corner of Main and Chillicothe avenue, where the Boyd grocery store now is, and had his office in the front room. He died with consumption in the 40’s [abt 1843]. We will in other articles to follow give attention to other professions and matters of interest connected with the early history of our city.
