Two Ohio Polanders Get Wives for Fifty Dollars Each. Article Text: A very unique wedding was held on Kelley's Island Wednesday. A year ago Joseph VOLK left his family in Poland and came to this country, settling on the Island. After a time came the news that his wife had died. He had two grown daughters left over there, but he had not enough money to get them over. He borrowed $50 each from Peter MILLE and Joseph PIDOCK to pay his children's passage to America. Two weeks ago they arrived but when the men wanted their money he could not pay it. Finally he proposed to let them have his daughters, as wives in payment of the debt. Mary is 16, while Annie is only 14. The men gratefully accepted the offer and Wednesday a Cleveland priest was rowed across through the ice from Marblehead and the day was celebrated by a double wedding in true Polish fashion. The girls are satisfied, so is the father and so are the two men with the bargain. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
