Mercy was recommended, which makes the penalty for the crime life imprisonment in the Ohio penitenitary without hope of pardon. When the buzzer from the dingy jury room, indicating that an agreement had been reached, was sounded, the prisoner was sent for. At 2:35, ghastly pale, under his darkly colored skin, he entered court between the two deputy sheriffs who have been his constant attendants every moment he has spent outside the grim cell in the old county jail. He was visibly cowering and apparently expected the worst. Gone was the bravado with which he faced County Prosecutor Stanton and his chief assistant, James H Cassidy, when, like a cornered rat, he shouted at them to tell the truth.
