James Fookes, an old and respected citizen of that village, while crossing the Pennsylvania railroad track, was struck by east bound passenger train No. 20, due here at 2:40. He stepped upon the track immediately in front of the approaching train, heedless of the warning cries from several bystanders who saw his imminent danger, and before the engineer realized what had happened the body of the unfortunate old gentleman was hurled through the air a distance of forty feet, and was horribly mangled and torn. He was carried to his home near by, where he lived with his wife and son John, but died from his terrible injuries a few minutes after. He was 81 years old, and besides his wife and son at home, leaves an older son, Robert, who is in the employ of the Government office at Washington, D.C. The occurrence was regarded as purely accidental, and the blame can be attributed to no one but the old gentleman himself, as the engineer sounded the usual danger signals when quite a distance from the crossing. The fatal crossing at which the accident occurred, and many others as well, was to have been equipped Monday by the railroad company with an electric bell, but for some reason the work was delayed and will be commenced today, just one day too late, however, to save the old gentleman's life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
