Elmer Rawlins, who has represented the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in this area 34 years, will retire next Monday, April 1. He and his predecessor here, the late David B. Melvin, have been the only agents in the Wellston area in 54 years, truly a remarkable record. Elmer and his good wife, who live on West Broadway, will be guests of honor at a testimonial dinner at the Colonial Inn, Jackson, this Thursday night, given by the Metropolitan personnel in the Chillicothe district. About 35 persons will be present to pay tribute to the retiring fellow-worker, the veteran of them all. Elmer Rawlins was born and reared in west Wellston. In May, 1928, while working in a Michigan ave. grovery for his uncle, William Turvey, the Metropolitan district manager appeared, wanting him to "take a debit". He took the Jackson agency for seven years, during the hardest times of the Great Depression. But by unceasing work, he made good. In May 1949, he was called to Chillicothe as assistant district superintendent with a wide scope of southern Ohio and a staff of local agents to supervise. During that time he yearned to be back in Wellston, and when in 1939, another veteran, David B. Melvin, retired for ill health, Rawlins was sent at his own request to Wellston, and ever since he has been the only Metropolitan agent here. Recently he had an attack of flu that laid him low. A month ago he and Mrs. Rawlins took a month's vacation in Florida, much of the time at Lake Wales. Rawlins successor in Wellston will be Eugene McGuire, a vigorous young man, who comes from Jackson. He will take over next Monday. There is a considerable turnover in personnel in large insurance companies' agency divirion by promotion, transfers and resignations. Which makes the record of Elmer Rawlins and his forerunner, Dave Melvin, of 54 years in Wellston quite unusual. As to the future Mr. Rawlins is undecided. He has been on the West Coast before, and he and Mrs. Rawlins would like to go back to California for a longer stay. But no definite plans have been made. The Rawlins havesix sons and daughters, all married and living elsewhere in Ohio. Needless to say there will be some family reunions, especially if son Harry at Lancaster is elected to the state Legislature this fall. as seems likely. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Friends & Fellow Citizens The day is near at hand when I hope we shall be able to emerge from this odious, colonial and oppressive temporary government, and embark into a happy, permanent, free, republican and independant one, whose pillars, I sincerely hope, may be the free will of the people. Then we shall be strong, then we shall be free, then we shall have it in our power to purge from among our law-givers the ravenous vultures who wish to pray on the vitals of the good republican spirits and sink them into oblivion, where they will be forever forgotten and remembered no more; and to add another bright, republican link to the brilliant and independent chain of the United States of America, and to enjoy all the rights, liberties, privileges and independence that is justly due to the honorable, the brave, the patriotic, republican, free and independent heroes and their true born sons and posterity, forever The above hint is the true principles I hold respecting government. NATHAN ELLIS N. B. A word of caution. - My fellow citizens, I must entreat you to be cautious, and treat the election fair, as it is a matter of the greatest importance that ever came before us. Let no man lord it over your conscience; neither endeavor to traduce any; try the spirits, hold to that which is good, roust yourselves like men, hold fast in the republican cause of liberty, let your eyes be as penetrating as those of an eagle and your judgement as sound as the Adament stone, for the day of our deliverance I hope is at hand, therefore take heed what you do. A. J. Fish, at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. Wm. Courtney, 647 North Union street. The above furnishes the sequel to a rather romantic courtship between these youthful lovers. Readers of the Times will remember that about a month ago Miss Courtney created quite a sensation by running away from home. A diligent search by the anxious father was rewarded by finding his daughter at the home of her lover in Van Wert. He compelled her to return home with him, and because of her youth attempted to break the attachemtn. Finding their loving ardor would not cool, he yesterday accompanied his prospective young son-in-law to Judge Lindemann's office, where a license was procured. Last night at 8:30, the boy and girl were made man and wife, in the presence of a small assembly of friends. At present they will make their home with Mr. Courtney, and young Allen will learn the bricklayer's trade with his new father. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! She was converted to God when about six years of age, grew up year by year more abundant in the Christian graces and more symmetrical in her religious character. Last winter, during the special services, she took a firmer hold on Christ as her Savior, testified that she received a large increase of grace and a richer experience in the things of God. She became verry willing to bear witness to God's converting power, and her voice was often heard in prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. She was very faithful in attendance at Sunday school and church, and during a protracted illness of nine weeks, and great suffering, was patient and resigned to the will of Providence. She has gone to a Christian's home. This is the seventh child these bereft parents have seen laid in the tomb, only one remaining to them, a married daughter residing in Kansas. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church, with a very large congregation in attendance, after which the remains were laid in the vault in Marion cemetery. A. C.
