Medina County's polio count for the summer rose to 34 over the Fourth of July weekend, six new cases having been admitted to Akron Children's hospital. In addition the polio death county for the Medina-Wayne county area rose to four with the death in Children's last Saturday morning of Fred W. Phillips, 39, whose two sons are recovering from the same disease in the Akron hosptial. According to County Health Commissioner Earl E. Kleinschmidt, all four deaths have resulted from the serious bulbar type of polio, and in all four cases physical exhaustion was closely connected with the disease onset. On this connection, the commissioner urges all persons who feel unwell "to take it easy" until they feel better, avoiding all types of strenuouis activity. He also stressed the fact that all persons who have come in contact with others recently come down with polio should lead a quiet life during the normal 10 to 14 d! ay polio incubation period. Two of the new cases are from Medina, the first in this community during the current outbreak. Admitted to Children's hospital Saturday was Claudia Schamp, three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralp Schamp, 249 Elmwood street. Admitted on Sunday was Thomas Wolfe, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlin Wolfe, 450 Lafayette road. Three others new cases are all in one family, they are John 6, Matthew 1 1/2 and Mark 3, children of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Crayford, who live on County Road 50 (Lake Road) a short distance east of the village of Chippewa Lake. John was taken to Children's hospital last Wednesday and his two brothers entered the same institution on Sunday. The sixth new case is Larry 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E.Scott, 215 Medina street, Lodi. He was admitted to Children's last Friday. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Runyan Article Text: “The community was shocked to learn of the sudden taking off, on Sunday last, by suicide, of Mr. George J. Runyan, living two miles south-east of this village. Mr. Runyan’s two unmarried daughters, came to church Sunday forenoon, leaving their father and brother Guy at home. Soon after their departure, Guy went over to one of the neighbors, remaining until the return of the girls from church. Their father not being at home as they supposed, they put out the horse. Dinner time came and still he did not return, but it was supposed that he had gone over to his son’s house, as he frequently did, remaining to dinner. As night drew near and he did not come the children wondered at his absence. Guy, the 15 year old son, while near the barn, chanced to open the door of the cow stable when he was nearly paralyzed at the sight of his father hanging to one of the beams almost in the doorway. The alarm was quickly spread and neighbors gathered to render what assistance they! could. Mr. C. T. King and Mr. Hutchison, of this village, happened to be riding by at the time and were the first to reach the spot and lower the body. The body was cold, indicating that death had occurred several hours previous. He no doubt did the deed soon after his daughters left home for church. The beam where the deed was done was so low that a moderately tall man could not stand upright underneath it. Death resulted from strangulation, and the peaceful look of the features indicated that death came easy and without a struggle. Mr. George J. Runyan was a man of very industrious habits, conscientious and strictly upright in all his dealings, and as excellent citizen. He was a man of very nervous temperament, sensitive to an extraordinary degree and easily excited. The death of his wife, about a year ago, fell with such force upon him that he remained inconsolable. His constant thought and conversation was of her death, and, under this strain his health became impaired, he grew more and more nervous and unsettled in fixed purpose of mind, and finally reason suddenly gave way as all believe who knew him. He had a beautiful home, was prosperous, and, had he been endowed with a more sanguine temperament, would have adjusted himself more philosophically to his conditions in life. The funeral was held on Tuesday, being very largely attended, and his remains were placed by those of his wife whose death eventually lead to his ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
